wake -> RE: An upgrade (8/28/2014 10:42:52 PM)

The features of Campaigns of the Danube sound spot on (don't know how I missed this on the first time round). I am especially interested in full fog of war and highly interested in the capability to resolve battles using miniatures. It sounds like the process for battle resolution in both the Danube and Elbe games are fairly simple and straight-forward but maybe evolving slightly. Am I correct?

Agathosdaimon -> RE: An upgrade (8/29/2014 12:36:41 AM)

its a great game - the best in fact for operational napoleonic war - no other game comes close to the uniqueness of the Campaigns on the Danube series - except perhaps Franks other games in other theatres, though the Fog of War modelling is one of a kind.

The battles resolution varies depending on what level of fog of war is chosen - if it is full fog of war, which is the best way to play, then battle resolution options arent available as information is relayed back to you as reports and so you arent involved in any kind of battlefield tactics , as you are not even 100% sure of where your units are apart from what reports tell you, which though may be late, incorrect or duplicates of a other reports etc.
but if you select the normal fog of war for such games, which lets you know at least which units on you side are where, then i believe that allows the battle resolution to involve some tactic options like Empires in Arms options.

FrankHunter -> RE: An upgrade (8/29/2014 7:17:30 AM)

When playing with full fog of war you still see your units on the map but the displayed location may not be where they actually are.

Corps commanders are constantly sending messengers back to your Army HQ with the whereabouts of their units. But instead of having those locations be displayed in the form of reports, the unit's icon is simply updated on the map when the messenger reaches the HQ. If the unit is 15 hexes away from the HQ that's pretty much a full day's ride for the messenger so the displayed location would be of where the unit was the day before.

wake -> RE: An upgrade (8/29/2014 2:53:46 PM)

Thanks for the replies. I am getting excited to try this out.

Just to clarify about using miniatures for battle resolution. I can use miniatures in battle resolution under what conditions? Can I do it when full fog of war is on or only under certain conditions? Will the mechanisms for miniatures be the same in the Danube and Elbe games? Thanks for your input.

Kai -> RE: An upgrade (8/29/2014 10:49:19 PM)

You can choose to use miniatures for any battle. You resolve the battle with miniatures, using whatever rule system you want, then upload the results in to the computer game and continue.

Truly one of the best features of the game, and it is the best Napoleonic campaign system ever devised. If you are a Napoleonic miniatures gamer, then you really should try this out.

I'm intrigued and will pick this up when the update is released. I've been impressed with Frank's other innovations in PFE and GOA. The FOW modeling sounds really interesting in this game.

Agathosdaimon -> RE: An upgrade (8/30/2014 3:14:41 AM)

yes Frank does wonders - making complex operational games quite simple to play but without losing many realistic aspects - Ageods games are good and similar but in truth it is Franks games that are superior and you are not just overloaded with blocks of miniscule text and extremely confusing command structures - one can structure their thoughts and planning on the way in which Campaigns works very well - the map gives you an overall sense of your operational strategy but rather than getting lost on what is doing what i like just seeing what starts to happen when messengers return with their reports - if you a chance to read the manual you will see or the interesting rules governing the game which make for so many friction/fog of war factors - stragglers and deserters, field hospitals, retreat points, supply trains etc its all there.

i like the idea too of playing a battle using the third party resolution and then using Histwar to play that one out (or one could even use Napoleon Total War)
I hope that in the next versions there will be third party resolution for single player games too so that one could solo play whether with miniatures or another napoleonic warfare computer game - currently this is only available in the Two player game options

My interest level in the game just dropped a whole bunch. I play solo and I was highly interested in resolving all of the battles with miniatures.

Agathosdaimon -> RE: An upgrade (8/30/2014 11:15:58 PM)

Oh sorry to hear, well i guess it is good that you know beforehand. The game though stands on its own though with what it does offer.

Perhaps it would be not too hard for this feature to just be added - ie allow for the miniatures resolution option to occur in sp too,
I am just curious as i like the idea of solo miniatures play, but how do you do it exactly? Do you randomly determine the pthersides decsions or do play with full determination as each side, playing each turn for each side with historical factors and historical personalities at play?

wake -> RE: An upgrade (8/31/2014 4:38:13 AM)

I do appreciate you mentioning that fact about single player as that is important to me. Hopefully that may become a reality at some point in time in this current game or another future one.

Here is a brief summary of what I do for solo miniature battles:

My software application first determines the general scenario including current time, sunrise, sunset, weather and armies involved. It then creates an OOB for both sides (and I am unaware of the exact enemy forces at that point in time). It then creates initial stances, placement, disposition of troops (on field and off). Based on the selected stances it determines a general "initial" enemy strategy (after I have selected mine). During the game it informs of when and where reinforcements arrive for both sides and that can create some pleasant and unpleasant surprises. I play the game out as both sides doing what seems logical, best and historically accurate for both commanders. Certainly not perfect but usually quite enjoyable.

Agathosdaimon -> RE: An upgrade (8/31/2014 9:54:11 AM)

wow, that actually sounds pretty good - i dont have any napoleonic miniatures apart from just a small box of cuirassiers. is the program something you created or is it available to buy - if i had money for it i would love to build miniature armies - well i guess i need the space and time too! so for now i will jsut have to stick with pc games and books for napoleonic era entertainment!

wake -> RE: An upgrade (8/31/2014 4:39:07 PM)

Yes, miniatures, can certainly eat into your time and money.

My app is something that I have created.

I do appreciate that even though the current Campaigns on the Danube game might not meet all my needs (and for that matter, what game does) that it seems, from what I have read, to be a well thought out, knowledgeable and realistic take on Napoleonic military matters.

If you want to play both sides solo, for both the game and the miniatures battle resolution, then there's no reason you can't play the two-player version and transfer files back and forth? You already have enough FOW in this game as far as I can tell just reading about it to make even a solo game interesting, plus you'd have the added advantage of being able to see both side's OOBs for the miniatures battles. Just a thought.

Agathosdaimon -> RE: An upgrade (9/1/2014 2:01:43 PM)

it will be good when this update is finaly released, i muat wonder how long it will be now?

wake -> RE: An upgrade (9/2/2014 4:58:42 PM)

Thanks for the suggestion pzgndr. I don't think that is what I am looking for but never having played the game I could be wrong and it may work out well. When the update is released I will try the demo and see if that or some version of that works.

FrankHunter -> RE: An upgrade (9/2/2014 11:13:45 PM)

wake, you know, I simply never thought about having the miniatures option in a solitaire game.

However, I can't think of any reason why it couldn't be added. I just may do that when I do the inevitable v2.01 :)

wake -> RE: An upgrade (9/3/2014 3:28:16 AM)

Thanks for considering this... very much appreciated.

Agathosdaimon -> RE: An upgrade (9/3/2014 12:28:09 PM)

brilliant! that is also good too if people want to use another game like Histwar, Napoleon Total War, Battles of Napoleon, etc - which would be exceptionally wonderful!

well first we have got to get 2.0 - still waiting for matrix to upload the update.

governato -> RE: An upgrade. When? (9/5/2014 2:18:34 PM)

So I wrote to Matrix ... very politely suggesting to 'hurry up already' releasing the upgrade [:)]
Below is their reply:

"Thank you for contacting us. I can only say that production expects to release it soon, probably next week. We will probably do first a public beta before officially releasing it."

Kai -> RE: An upgrade. When? (9/5/2014 2:50:53 PM)

Funny that I've waited patiently so long for this release, but now that it's close, I find the waiting to be excruciating. Instant gratification is so much better than delayed gratification.

tombo -> RE: An upgrade. When? (9/5/2014 3:19:52 PM)

...im waitig too for update prior to purchase. Hurry before the $$ goes else where. hehe.

Agathosdaimon -> RE: An upgrade. When? (9/15/2014 11:53:56 AM)

still waiting, what is happening?

Agathosdaimon -> RE: An upgrade. When? (9/19/2014 12:57:03 AM)

????? waiting still, sadly

AP514 -> RE: An upgrade. When? (9/22/2014 5:47:28 AM)

WOW....I Guess Matrix is slow when it comes to putting out something they don't make money off of....

1 month + and counting from when Frank posted the patch was ready...........

Still looking for any news on VOL.2...Throw us a bone Frank :)

tombo -> RE: An upgrade. When? (9/22/2014 6:30:22 PM)

SteveD64 -> RE: An upgrade. When? (9/24/2014 5:39:53 PM)

Thinking of buying this game. Does the new patch mean I can play this on a Windows 8.1 OS?

berto -> RE: An upgrade. When? (9/24/2014 9:10:52 PM)
