When is it NOT worth building a mining station or gas mining? I see the percerntages, but really don't understand how they work. How does the % translate? I read the sticky about extraction, but to be honest, I didn't understand it at all. I have a major in math, so maybe just a different explanation is needed to make it click.

advice I got some time back is that don't build if the combined numbers are <100 and really higher the better. Too many mines <100 will slow your economy. On the other hand, there are times when you just need to build a mine to gain the resource.

also build at least one gas mine in every system that you have a significant presence, this will ease local shortages.

If there is a planet with decent amounts of caslon and hydrogen (more than 100% when put together), put a gas station (preferably with lots of storage space) there - you will be glad later in the game.

The percentage is the profusion of the resource.

At 100%, your extractors will work at full speed, extracting a lots of this resource with ever mining cycle.
Resources are infinite in DWU. They can disappear or appear through random events.

I'm going to apply the scientific method with excel I think...
I want to know the relationship between number of extractors in a design and resource extraction rate. Taking that, I want to apply going price of said resource and compare to maintenance.

Calculations like that sound incredibly useful :). Not everything can be reduced to pure credit values though. Having a good fuel station in your home system would be worth it even if it cost quite a bit, for example.

I didn't quite catch the guide's extraction thread to be honest. [:(]

Spidey -> RE: Mining and Extraction (5/31/2014 11:57:01 AM)

The way I see it, it's the private sector that picks up the maintenance so I'd rather build ten too many mining stations than one too few. The civilians should be swimming in cash a few years into the game so there's really not much reason to worry much about giving them more maintenance upkeep than what is absolutely necessary.

Quite frankly, the bigger problem for me is the time required to build the mines. Each construction ship costs state maintenance, meaning it comes out of my pocket, which means I don't have more to spare than I have to. But that means constuction time is at a relative premium, which means I have to prioritize what I build and what I don't build based on how much I need the resources provided.

Resources have changed in Universe - they are far less prevalent than before.

For Universe, I try to target planets with at least two resources if possible, and of course the higher the % the better.

The % value you see for a resource is how rich that deposit is.

Example :

You have a planet 50% Steel and 65% Gold.

For every 10 units you process, you would get 5 Steel and 6 1/2 Gold.

No, this is precisely how to not explain the resources Profusion/Richness. You don't extract "10 resources" and share them between the percentages. You extract "Speed of your mining drills" x "Profusion of the resource", and that for each resources independently.

If a planet has 100% Gold and 50% Steel.
And another 100% Gold, 100% Steel and 100% Lead.

After a few seconds, the first mining station will extract 100 gold and 50 steel (150 resources), while the second station will extract 100 gold, 100 steel and 100 lead (300 resources).

The second planet is two times more productive than the first one.

Didn't I just say that, but just with different quantities?

In actuality, for mineral types, Extractors will process from 3 to 6 units per cycle depending on the Tech level.

Not exactly, you said it processes x units per cycle then shares this between resources. I say it processes x units per resources per cycle.

Can anyone share their mining station designs?
