Murphy's Law?

The matter has been brought to Matrix/Slitherine's attention.

Meanwhile, 2.01 does seem to be posted here:

junk2drive -> RE: 2.01 UPDATE released! (6/4/2014 3:43:00 AM)

So you want me to uninstall 2.0, install 1.0 and run the 2.01 patch?

berto -> RE: 2.01 UPDATE released! (6/4/2014 6:36:47 AM)

No need to uninstall. Just rename your top-level game folder, say

John Tiller's Campaign Series -> John Tiller's Campaign Series 2.00

You can still run v2.00 by clicking on the EXEs from within Windows Explorer.

Then, yes, do a base 1.00 install, then apply the 2.01 patch. Note that the autorun.exe auto-update mechanism is now fixed. So you can either apply the 2.01 patch that way, else ftp download the 2.01 patch file from

http://www.matrixgames.com/products/318/downloads/
http://www.matrixgames.com/products/318/links/John.Tiller's.Campaign.Series

Then unzip, run the patch EXE, launch the game, enjoy.

In any event, by any method, patch 1.00 -> 2.01. Patching 2.00 -> 2.01 is not advised.

Jafele -> RE: 2.01 UPDATE released! (6/4/2014 11:32:58 AM)

Thanks for the update guys. An amazing job for a classic game. [&o][&o][&o]

and a mighty big thank you from me too...[sm=tank2-39.gif]

even if you force me to play the the first PC game since fall 2012.

1925frank -> RE: 2.01 UPDATE released! (6/4/2014 6:06:06 PM)

If I understand Berto correctly, simply downloading 2.01 and running it over my previous 1.00 and 2.00 is not advised.

Instead, rename my current "John Tiller's Campaign Series" so it becomes "John Tiller's Campaign Series 2.00."

Install the 1.00 disk again, and it will create a "John Tiller's Campaign Series" folder separate from the "John Tiller's Campaign Series 2.00."

Download 2.01 into the new "John Tiller's Campaign Series" and execute it there, so there's no 2.00 to possibly conflict with it.

My understanding is everything is geared to download into a "John Tiller's Campaign Series" folder and not a "John Tiller's Campaign Series 2.00" folder.

If I have an email game in progress, which will now be in "John Tiller's Campaign Series 2.00," can I just copy and paste the files into the new "John Tiller's Campaign Series" folder and pick up where I left off?

I'm sorry if this all seems rudimentary, but rudimentary is what I am, and I'd appreciate it if I've got this right or have misunderstood.

1925frank -> RE: 2.01 UPDATE released! (6/4/2014 6:06:39 PM)

I printed the manual in color, and it looks great!

Jason Petho -> RE: 2.01 UPDATE released! (6/4/2014 6:07:25 PM)

Looks good to me.

However you do it, rename all previous installation folders for JTCS.

To achieve 2.01:

  • Install 1.00 from base CD (or file, however you purchased the original game). Name the install as you wish. Suggestion: "John Tiller's Campaign Series" (the default, I believe).

    Then either:

  • Run autorun.exe in that brand new base install. It should walk you through the steps to auto-update to 2.01.

    Or:

  • FTP download the 2.01 Update ZIP file (see previous posts for URLs). Unzip. Run the unzipped EXE. Be sure to indicate the proper folder name for the new install you just did.

    If in doubt, your best, easiest bet should be the first option: let the autorun.exe auto-udpate do the update for you.

    Yes, that is correct.

    Good luck.

    Jason Petho -> RE: 2.01 UPDATE released! (6/4/2014 8:57:04 PM)

    Until 2.10 in 2016, yes.

    Didn't catch them all, but caught a lot!

    Zap -> RE: 2.01 UPDATE released! (6/4/2014 9:17:49 PM)

    Is there an easy way to move all the non-stock scenario files in EF/WF folder, for the 2.01 upgrade? I don't want to reload them one by one into the 2.01 file folders

    Jason Petho -> RE: 2.01 UPDATE released! (6/4/2014 9:21:59 PM)

    Did they work in 2.00?

    Zap -> RE: 2.01 UPDATE released! (6/4/2014 9:29:39 PM)

    yes, When you load the update to the 1.0 base non of the non-stock games are in the EF/WF file folders. So all the non-stock scenario files I have in the 2.0 will need to be moved over to the 2.01 upgraded game. I just don't want to search for those files again, one by one and then transfer them over. did I make myself clear?

    Jason Petho -> RE: 2.01 UPDATE released! (6/4/2014 9:35:49 PM)

    Uninstalling the game would have left all the extra scenarios from the 2.00 installation, while removing the 2.00 files. Renaming that folder and then From there you could have copy and pasted the remaining files into the 2.01 installation after you reinstalled the game.

    Zap -> RE: 2.01 UPDATE released! (6/5/2014 1:42:35 AM)

    fortunately, I have my files from 2.0. So I will just copy and paste as you wrote. Thanks.

    Since some of the data files (OOBs etc.) were tweaked, this might affect ongoing games. So, yes, you are safest to conclude all ongoing games with 2.00.

    BUT, this doesn't preclude your installing 2.01 immediately. Simply

  • Rename your current installation folder, e.g. "John Tiller's Campaign Series" -> "John Tiller's Campaign Series 2.00"
  • Continue playing your current games by, within Windows Explorer, double-clicking the game EXEs (e.g., Rising Sun.exe) in the renamed older installation folder.
  • Do a new 1.00 installation, then update that to 2.01 (maybe best via the autorun.exe auto-update mechanism). Be sure to give your new installation a different name from the older one.

    Or:

  • You could simply leave everything as is, and do a new installation as "John Tiller's Campaign Series 2.01".

    There's no law that precludes your having multiple installations with whatever name you please. And there's no requirement for you to use the Windows Start menu (else a desktop shortcut) to launch the game (you could double click EXEs within Windows Explorer instead). There's great flexibility here.

    Whatever, your choice.

    Good luck!

    I prefer to launch the games from my desktop. Here's how it currently looks like:

    Top row: My old 1.04 install, with shortcuts to JSGME, Main Menu (autorun.exe, to which I manually change the icon from the properties), Unit viewer
    2nd row: Shortcuts pointing at various Middle East alpha executables
    3rd row: Shortcuts pointing at various Vietnam alpha executables
    4th row: Shortcuts pointing at official 2.01 install executables
    5th row: Shortcuts pointing at official 2.00 install executables
    6th row: Shortcuts pointing at 2.01 beta test install executable with shortcuts to run the exes with -NoEncryption flag

    All these are installed on my C:\ drive, under Matrix Games. The next level folder, ie. John Tiller's Campaign Series I handle as Berto suggests, with older versions having the version name appended to folder names.

    Easiest way to create a Shortcut?

    -1- Navigate to target folder > click at the target executable > right click > select Copy from Popup menu
    -2- Go to Desktop > right click > select Paste Shortcut from Popup menu

    Hope this helps [8D]
