here's my defense strategy (and not only against pirates): - set up fleets of 4 to 5 destroyers (i usually go with 5 since the number looks better in my eyes), one per system with a colony. They'll be your defensive fleet. - for each fleet, set home base, set stance to defensive and range to nearby systems (this can be done by selecting the fleet and in the small fleet window bottom left, use the bottom buttons to set home base, stance and range), then set the fleets to auto: they'll defend the system from incoming attacks and maybe sometimes they'll be able to defend also in nearby systems (but don't hope too much on that :p) - in each colony, set up 5 troops garrisoned: they'll crush any incoming raid that'll pass through the defensive fleet - build 1-2 fleets of 20+ ships - don't try to defend every system in which you have a mining station, you won't be able to, just destroy/recapture or rebuild stations To crush pirats: - don't cancel protection agreement from all pirates in one go. - select one pirate clan, steal territory map, cancel agreement, send your big fleets to crush all known pirate bases of selected clan - rinse and repeat with all clans thou find offending in thy eyes. - with all other pirates with which you still have protection agreement, set up 10 to 15 troops and troops transport ships to carry them. - for all planets with more than a hidden base, send this army and destroy the pirates facilities: it won't break protection agreement at once, so don't worry. - for all planets with just a hidden base, the 5 garrisoned troops should be enough to wipe them from your worlds After that, you'll only have to deal with these pirates occasionnally on your territory, but you'll still have to chase them away all the time since as long as they have bases somewhere, they'll come back. And btw, i always check the box "pirates don't respawn" in the settings of a new game x)
