captskillet -> 70 Years ago today............. (6/6/2014 9:39:00 AM)

one of the seminal moments in history was unfolding on the beaches of Normandy, over 4000 Allied soldiers paid the ultimate price that day but a beachhead was secured and the nutcracker (Soviets east/Allies west) was starting to draw shut. Lets us not forget!

Well said. This year is especially poignant from my national perspective, since it's the first year where the efforts of Danish sailors in Operation Neptune is officially honoured.

Every year on this night I drink a toast to all who fought and died on both sides doing what they were ordered to do. CHEERS to you all....[sm=00000436.gif] GP

I wonder what sort of commemoration there will be on June 15 for the 70th anniversary of the Saipan landings.

Probably not much. Most people in the industrialized world knows about the June 6 landings in Normandy. Most people don't even know where Saipan is.

On a little different note, it is pretty amazing that the Allies were able to pull off two very large scale invasions within days of one another on two different ends of the world. Really amazing when you think about it.

Certainly, I believe the landings in Morocco and Algeria were unprecedented at the time. I think, especially with the French landings, both on the Cotentin and in the south, that thanks are due to the bureaucrats and staff members who organized it all. In Morocco things were all effed up, and I think there were people who perhaps never saw a kraut who helped get things right for D-Day. Hail to all of them!

Oh, I forgot, I wanted to mention the Trojan War. Never mind.

This is a "family forum". Let's leave comments about "marital enhancement " trade disputes alone.[:-] By which I mean, the Gorn's STILL OFF HIS MEDS! [:D]

I meant the Iliad. As in Ilium. AKA Troy. I don't use Trojans either. They don't make them big enough. When addressing me you may call me "Gorn" without putting a "the" in front of it. When referencing my species say "the gorn's STILL OFF HIS MEDS!" No caps
