I play the Steam version, and when I conquer an empire, I get all their remaining ships. They have maxos blasters, basic armor, fusion reactor.. just basic stuff you get at start. But when I send them all to retire, I suddenly get bonuses to Titan Beams, Quantum reactors, Meridian shields... Seems like a bug to me.
