tocaff -> RE: Really OT : World Cup 2014 (7/1/2014 10:51:43 AM)

Not for long as on Friday the French or the Germans will be going home. A match that is eagerly being looked forward to as it promises to be a very good one. That evening Brazil v Colombia will be another tough test. A good day of football.

Today the Swiss take on Argentina and I'm waiting for a team to dismantle Argentina's defense, though probably that won't happen in this matchup. Then this evening the USA v Belgium. I love World Cup, but hate FIFA.

patrickl -> RE: Really OT : World Cup 2014 (7/1/2014 10:56:30 AM)

I hope the Germans win. Love to see their BMW power.

Oh oh.. I love Citroen too![:D] Both are very strong teams. [&o]

buutsy -> RE: Really OT : World Cup 2014 (7/1/2014 1:16:32 PM)

Yeah, another "classic" coming up !
Good luck for the "Klinsmann - Team" , they will need it [:D]

Cribtop -> RE: Really OT : World Cup 2014 (7/1/2014 4:21:49 PM)

C'mon USA!!!

(As a rebel I have trouble saying C'mon you Yanks!)

tocaff -> RE: Really OT : World Cup 2014 (7/1/2014 6:50:03 PM)

Argentina squeaked past the Swiss and now await the winner of the USA v Belgium. I want the US to get that first, elusive star before I die and I'm not getting any younger. Remember that sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.

GreyJoy -> RE: Really OT : World Cup 2014 (7/1/2014 7:44:33 PM)

Really hope USA's magic continues tonight.
But Belgium is pretty strong. The Americans will need a bit of luck!

Gaspote -> RE: Really OT : World Cup 2014 (7/1/2014 9:49:34 PM)

Blegium is really dominating but with some luck [:D]

warspite1 -> RE: Really OT : World Cup 2014 (7/1/2014 9:56:18 PM)

Brilliant, end to end game. [&o]

HansBolter -> RE: Really OT : World Cup 2014 (7/1/2014 10:05:06 PM)

Belgium really deserves the win.

The USA defenders are awesome, but our midfielders are AWOL.

warspite1 -> RE: Really OT : World Cup 2014 (7/1/2014 10:33:33 PM)

Well done Belgium - unlucky USA. The latter did themselves proud. Punched above their weight, gave their all. Quality.

tocaff -> RE: Really OT : World Cup 2014 (7/1/2014 10:52:33 PM)

No shame for the USA in the loss. They did better than I expected in the Cup. Tim Howard was stupendous.

obvert -> RE: Really OT : World Cup 2014 (7/1/2014 10:59:42 PM)

Very fun to watch! How many great saves by Howard?! [&o]

Would have been amazing to steal it by putting away the point blank chance at the end of regulation, but Belgium deserves to move forward. Sets up another must see game with Argentina! [X(]

tc464 -> RE: Really OT : World Cup 2014 (7/1/2014 11:29:55 PM)

16 saves by Howard, the most in 50 years. Amazing performance. Yedlin and Green are 20 and 19 respectively....we'll be seeing them in the next couple of tournaments I imagine.

Colombia, Belgium, Germany and Costa Rica for the semis [:D]

Cribtop -> RE: Really OT : World Cup 2014 (7/2/2014 2:18:08 AM)

On the whole, a lot to like for the USA in this Cup performance. We are no longer the outsiders, and have a young base of solid talent and coaching to build on, with dramatically increased home support.

That said, as great as Howard was, and as exciting as the ending was, we were outclassed and Belgium deserved the win.

Still, I bet Wondolowski is seeing his chance to smash and grab right at the end of the 90 in his dreams for a while. Sigh.

I shift to Costa Rica, Germany and Colombia. Should be a great finish either way.

Colombia are at 4.3 to win against Brazil and 13 to 1 to win the Worldcup. Belgium are 3.5 and 12 to 1 to win the Worldcup. I think its worth a bit of money to wager on either/some of these (maybe in combination with France who are 2.9 underdogs to Germany and 8.5 to win the4 worldcup)

LargeSlowTarget -> RE: Really OT : World Cup 2014 (7/3/2014 8:20:20 AM)

Jeez, emotions are cooking up at work in anticipation - I'm the only German guy in an office full of Frenchmen... [sm=duel.gif]

Sorry Gaspote, but although I have supported the Frenchies as my second-favorite team until now, the situation obliges me to retract my earlier post "Allez les Bleus!" and change it to

"Coulez les Bleus!"

Heck, Monday I will either get ribbed or beaten up by the entire office, or worse...

wegman58 -> RE: Really OT : World Cup 2014 (7/3/2014 11:25:58 AM)

In many ways I'm glad the US is out. Leave the World Cup to countries where the nation really cares. Highest number I've seen for paying attention in the States is 30% - and I have to say it drove down MY ESPN watching over the past few weeks.

tocaff -> RE: Really OT : World Cup 2014 (7/3/2014 3:37:48 PM)

FIFA sold more tickets to people from the USA than any other country, save Brazil.

The biggest problem at the Cup has been the massive wave of fans from Argentina who have no tickets, money or a place to stay. There have been many incidents with them causing problems and being rapidly deported. A bus originating from the Argentina-Brazil border stopped for a break for people to stretch, eat or use a bathroom and when they were supposed to depart 3 guys from Argentina wanted to stay and watch their team play. The bus driver refused and they took the keys to the bus and beat him. In Sao Paulo tent cities have sprung up as many fans from Argentina have nowhere to stay. At the stadiums they are trying to trade their cell phones for tickets. It's nuts. To be fair Argentina has no real foreign credit, their citizens may not take money out of the country or hold foreign currency and they need special permission from the government to travel abroad with money that has virtually no value outside of Argentina.

Drunkeness has also been a problem not limited to any particular group of fans. Party hearty!

patrickl -> RE: Really OT : World Cup 2014 (7/4/2014 8:42:53 AM)

The Battle of France is about to begin.

Argentina's lot will only get worse. As of last week, the US Supreme court confirmed that the Argentinian debt taken on by American firms has not been discharged by Argentinian defaults. They need to pay up the small percentage of creditors that did not accept their "negotiated settlement" and 50% bond haircut.

Besides tunnel collapses and "**** her right in the *****" videobombing, it's gone surprisingly smoothly. I didn't think it would go as well as it has.

Encircled -> RE: Really OT : World Cup 2014 (7/4/2014 2:49:53 PM)

Best World cup since 1990.

Next two might be good, but you do kind of doubt it!

buutsy -> RE: Really OT : World Cup 2014 (7/4/2014 2:51:45 PM)

Nice Quarters everyone [;)]
really looking forward [8D]

oaltinyay -> RE: Really OT : World Cup 2014 (7/4/2014 4:52:51 PM)

watching the franco-german game now, and 1st half finished...

seems to me, only way french can declare a victory is not come out in the second half and ask americans and british teams to come and play for them... ( russians are not in this cup I believe ... )... seriously french seem helpless...

Gaspote -> RE: Really OT : World Cup 2014 (7/4/2014 4:53:05 PM)

We are losing on a ****ty goal even if we get more goal chance[:@]

are we looking the same thing ? we dominated them technically, they are just taller for the first goal [8|].

oaltinyay -> RE: Really OT : World Cup 2014 (7/4/2014 4:59:29 PM)

does anyone here remember the time french played against germans and platini was playing.... and french lost in style...

well -- with all due respect to the valiant men in those days-- you dominated them technically in 1940 also...

we can also blame it on the belgium flank as well ( I mean right flank here - they develop their attacks from right if u havent realized )

Gaspote -> RE: Really OT : World Cup 2014 (7/4/2014 5:07:27 PM)

WW2 joke, and not we didn't dominated them in 1940 it was the main problem. The german get much trouble in defense we got in our it's what I'm saying.
