Yawn? Come now Schanilec, I fear in your frail dotage you have forgotten how to read English. I did not write NFL, I wrote World Cup [;)]

Put a fiver on BRA-CRO, both to score and Croatia to win :) Odds were good!

I bet they were...... good luck, but I am counting on a 2-0 to Brazil.

I'm an American and think that our disdain for soccer is a reason for American exceptionalism (until we put a guy in the White House who thinks the US Constitution is a terribly flawed document).

Reason 1 - Humans are tool users and are equipped to use tools with our hands. What does soccer prohibit? Using your hands. The game is designed to not use the appropriate tools (hands) to manipulate an object.

Reason 2 - You use your head without a hat! Americans are smart enough to wear helmets in the sports where using your head (literally) is commonplace.

Soccer is a snooze fest.

You can try to explain that to me, but in a non-Matrix Games forum. No place for that here.

That's not the original cup (the Jules Rimet trophy was a cup). Brazil got to keep this in 1970 having won the trophy for the third time.

I think the current trophy looks quite nice. Shame we'll never get out hands on it [:(]

What happened to "it's just lovely". You Brits need to get your act together.

1. The game is designed to use hands. Footballers are allowed to use their hands - namely the Goalkeeper at all times, and all players when taking a throw-in.
2. Americans are smart enough to wear helmets. So why is there debate going on at the moment about brain damage and American Football?

Football is the world's number one game. It would hardly achieve that status if it were a snooze fest.

Vis-a-vis the quoting of one's own post:

Listen colonial chappie, whilst in certain circumstances quoting oneself is indeed considered bad form on an internet forum, that quite evidently is not the case in this particular situation.

If one were to look at this in terms of a conversation, we have a situation where a response to a comment by Party A (in this case Oberst_Klink) was eloquently made by party B (in this case, the handsome, suave, sophisticated international lover, witty raconteur, bon viveur and all round thoroughly good egg, warspite1), The response from Party B invited a possible response from the other party, but as there was no question from Party B, there was in fact no compunction for Party A to respond. However, even if Party A was wanting to further the conversation (which of course he would given the top-hole conversationalist he was conversing with), something then happened such that Party B was compelled to comment further, thus in effect seemingly quoting himself. In this case we had the wholly unexpected situation where Party A was seemingly about to win a sum of cash (GBP the Queen's sterling, one earnestly hopes) due to the fact that two components of his prediction had come to pass. Party B merely made the wholly appropriate "well, well" comment as an expectorant for what could be about to come.

Sadly for Party A, what was about to come was not another Croatian goal, but something of a colossal faux pas from the referee that handed Brazil a second goal courtesy of a dodgy penalty decision.

I trust that has clarified the situation, what?

GreyJoy -> RE: Really OT : World Cup 2014 (6/13/2014 6:40:56 AM)

Brazil stole the 2-1 with a penalty that didn't exist.
Croatia did play really well considering the odds. A draw would have been the fairest result.
Oh well...

I don't like this Brazil that much. A part from the defence (Marcelo, Dani Alves, Thiago Silva and David Luiz), which is possibly the strongest defence in the tournament (even if it's a bit unbalanced with those two L and R defenders that are more kneen to attack rather than defend), the rest isn't exactly stellar.
Neymar is strong, but doesn't win matches alone (he's not a Ronaldo, Maradona, C.Ronaldo or Ibra).
Fred? A mediocre nr.9
Hulk? idem
Oscar is good, yes, but a champion?

Do you remember the Brazil of France 1998? That was a monster one!
Or even 1994 with Romario, Bebeto, Dunga etc etc

I do believe Uruguay is very strong this year. Could be a surprise.
Colombia? everybody talks about it but, to be honest, I didn't have the chances to watch it properly so I don't know.
Belgium is awesome. Bookmakers give their win 5-1...which means they believe it has some real chances.

Italy? Not as good as the previous ones, but we are good in this kind of tournaments, just like Germany. I think we may arrive at the QF.

Spain's moment is over imho. They have been the best around for 8 years with the same players... can't last that much, not at those levels.

Germany? I fear they will be the favourite this time, along with Brazil. The germans are always there...

Shame that anonymous Japanese referee made sure that Brazil won... non existing penalty (in Europe there would be tonnes of penalties in each game if such benign actions were sanctioned) and equalizer overruled (foul on heir goalkeeper that never was)... shame... real shame on FIFA (the same people who made that Qatar got the World Cup in 2022)... [:(]

BTW, Brazil was total disappointment - they stars only gave few "flashes"... with such gameplay they would not go far (unless the referees intervene again)...

Fastest growing sport in the US is soccer.

Anyway, Brazil need to massively improve (they won't have to if they keep getting soft refs) if they are going to win it.

Intending to watch TV straight from 1700 GMT to 0100 GMT tonight for the three games. C'mon England and anyone but Australia! [;)]

After USA 1994 I thought the U.S. were really ready to admit soccer among their top sports (basket, football, hokey and baseball), but, as far as I know, the "movement" did never really grow up as expected.
I even heard that, after 1994, the soccer major league has died for some years...

I follow Premier League from cable, so I really would like to see England do well.

Too bad only news item I found about them was this;
"England's Team visited local orphange today.
'It is heartbreaking to see their hopless faces. It is like they see no future ahead of them.' said Jose 6 years
."

Mistakes (the third goal)

Fastest growing sport in the US is soccer.

An oft-cited and erroneous assumption by soccer-philes. Depending on your source and definition of 'fastest growing', either Pickleball or Lacrosse is the fastest growing team sport. Other sources say MMA (UFC) is nipping at the heels of NHL hockey for popularity. NFL/college football, baseball and basketball are the spectator powerhouses.

The 'just you wait and see how popular soccer will become in the US' movement is ignoring their perennial fifth-rate showing. Juvenile soccer and recreational adult soccer is going OK, but that's never translated to watching (and supporting) professional league soccer matches.

Here's an interesting article from the respected author of Freakonomics on the matter...

Just imagine if Holland had tried to win fair like that in 2010 instead of resorting to kicking Spain off the pitch.

Fair enough chicken boy

Rest of the world is a bit keen on it though, and the first negative post was by (I'm assuming) a fan of American football and baseball (sports which I like, but not like I love football)

Anyone suggesting its a snooze fest just doesn't understand it, especially the world cup
