I'll see your battlefield earth and raise you starship troopers.

DUDE! Starship troopers is a classic!

DUDE!! The topic is scifi war *movies*!!! The book is a classic. The movie sucked jagged boulders. Though the direct to DVD ST3 Marauder wasn't bad.

Starship Troopers the movie is one of the better satires of fascism and the military industrial complex. I'd say it definitely belongs in this thread.

That movie was an abomination. It was so bad and so NOT Starship Troopers that Robert A Heinlein's widow made the producers take his name off of the credits. Heinlein rolls over in his grave every time Starship Troopers is mentioned in the same sentence as movie.

That said: even though the movie bears little to no resemblance to the book (and that's my complaint about it) - still - even though the movie wasn' all that great its worth a watch on NetFlix (is it on NF?) if one has nothing else to do for an hour or so.

Are you sure it was intended? [8D]

Maybe it's like the Rambo movies. I watch them exclusively to have a good laugh (quite hilarious stuff this Rambo guy). But of course these are unintended laughs. I mean, the director did not make the movie to provoke these many laughs (in my case that is). He was dead serious about honour, the flag and blah blah blah.

Zap -> RE: Scifi war movies (7/1/2014 3:45:57 PM)

Went for the new Transformer movie, over th weekend. It was good. But to be honest my age is showing. I had a harder time liking it for the constant action! It was too fast for me. Old age is a b#%&*ch.

Here is why it's secretly a classic:

Yes.

Kuokkanen -> RE: Scifi war movies (7/1/2014 5:57:35 PM)

Reviews about Starship Troopers (the movie) in Finland call it satire. It seems finnish movie critics are smarter than american ones [;)]

Satire or not, overall Starship Troopers - with all its faults (can't they bring any futuristic equivalents of Vulcan?) - is best scifi war movie I know. And the film analysis by Rob Ager has one miss: asteroid wrecked spacecraft's long range communications, yet guy seems to assume ship send report about it.

[edit]
Starship Troopers movie was started without any deliberate relation to the novel. Then somebody noticed similarities, movie name was changed, and script was modified.

[edit2]
I would also like to make comparison to All quiet on the western front:
Recruiting in school (or so Rico's father says) - check
Pro-war propaganda - check
War is Hell - check

One nick name for it is Melrose Space. (Google the TV series Melrose Place.)

They intentionally picked actors from that type of serials.

That Starship Troopers the Movie is not faithful to Starship Troopers the Book is part of why it works so well as a satire - it shows you the flaws and cracks and contradictions of a military regime rather than reveling in it.

StarUnder -> RE: Scifi war movies (7/14/2014 1:53:38 PM)

Serenity ;)

It is less obvious to those who haven't read the book, therefore american reviewers painting the movies as exaltation instead satire. Sequel movies make point more clear, but otherwise seem to be of lesser quality.

Serenity doesn't qualify as war movie. Neither does The Chronicles of Riddick.
