I don't know why but I see the Belgians kicking the Argentinians out [8D] And I hope they do so. I'd like them to win this WC. Crazy but why not?

In any case Belgium should show how inexistent and irrelevant the Argentina (creative) midfield is [;)]

Not without a massive kick up the arse they won't. Last night there were two Belgians who were just along for the ride and that won't help against Argentina.

british exil -> RE: World Cup (7/2/2014 11:58:14 AM)

8 Matches
3 matches with regular 90 min
3 that had extra time
2 that went to penalties

I doubt that the next round is going to be any easier for the teams.

I don't think that the coaches are going to stick to the setup the used for the last round esp. Germany.
In fact I think some of the coaches will be having serious talks with some of their players.

Agreed.

Still, when they managed to play (yesterday and only a few times) in 5th gear they were really superior to the Americans.

If they use the 2nd or 3rd gear yes, it's going to be really complicated.

They shouldn't need to reach extra time in order to feel the need to use 5th gear though.

warspite1 -> RE: World Cup (7/2/2014 4:54:40 PM)

Well I've made my predictions - and there is Zero chance I won't change them between now and Friday at least a couple of times [:)]

It is soooooooooo difficult to call.

Holland should be a stone dead cert but Costa Rica have surprised everyone and the tournament is in "their manor"... well sort of [;)]

France vs Germany. France have looked much better - but who ever bets against Germany?

Argentina vs Belgium. Argentina were my choice for the tournament but, Messi aside, they have been ordinary and their goalie looks suspect. Like with France / Germany, Belgium will be looking for revenge for World Cup's past. Good news for Belgium is they have come this far and Hazard hasn't even tried yet. Million dollar question of course is will he be able to turn it on when it matters?

And that leaves the most difficult of all. Everything says Colombia to beat a poor Brazil. But as Napoleon would say, its better to be lucky than er.... whatever. Brazil were lucky against Croatia and hugely fortunate against Chile. Will that luck hold or will they actually start playing?

If anyone gets all four right, they deserve to win this competition outright [&o]

Kanov -> RE: World Cup (7/2/2014 5:12:21 PM)

Ok here it goes:

Colombia 3-2 Brazil in agonizing extra time. Stadium in full yellow colors brighter than the sun. Ha-mes hat trick

France 1-4 Germany, yeah they will turn the switch on. Record setting Klose.

Belgium 1 - 0 Argentina, Messi's shoulders can only sustain his NT for so long.

Costa Rica 1 - 3 Netherlands, time to choke for Netherlands has not come yet, unknown territory for Ticos, they are the "Champion killer NT", not the "Finalist killer NT", so that grants Netherlands immunity.

aaatoysandmore -> RE: World Cup (7/2/2014 5:24:00 PM)

Where's the USA? Oh that's right they got put out by some waffles. [:D]

Dixie -> RE: World Cup (7/2/2014 6:36:59 PM)

France v Germany:

This is a tough one, Germany haven't been at their best whilst France are playing fairly well. But there's always that feeling Germany will peak for the latter stages of the competition but is it too little too late? Meanwhile, can the French continue their impressive play?

Germany to win (by one goal)

Brazil v Colombia

Brazil have been lucky (as Warspite said) to get this far and their forward line has been pretty pants so far. Colombia on the other hand, are playing good football and performing well. My heart says 1-0 Colombia and so does my head, expect some questionable refereeing decisions along the way though making Colombia's victory all the sweeter.

Argentina V Belgium

Argentina to win, no question. Neither team have been as good as expected (IMO), but Argentina have Messi as well as not having Hazard and Fellini who have been mere passengers so far.
2-0 Argentina

Netherlands v Costa Rica

Oranje to win, probably after Arjen Robben is shot down by a sniper on the stadium roof. Fortunately it's a mere flesh wound and he recovers in time to score the resulting penalty. Of course, after admitting he dived in the last game he won't be given any penalties this time round [:D] Costa Rica to edge it, although this is the game I'm least sure of.

Expect these to change several times though, but I expect to see Argentina and Colombia in the semi-finals. Probably joined by Germany and maybe Costa Rica.

TulliusDetritus -> RE: World Cup (7/2/2014 10:14:15 PM)

I also know who should be winning. And I won't change my mind. But of course I will be utterly wrong [:'(]

Brazil to beat Colombia
Germany to beat France
Belgium to beat Argentina
Netherlands to beat Costa Rica

Anyways, when I knew this 2014 WC would be played in Brazil I automatically thought: "if someone -except Brazil- dares win it... they will leave the country in a coffin..." [:'(] I stick to this sordid prediction.

Those who mention Messi, he he he... what happened exactly 4 years ago? Messi was on fire then (2009). Germany destroyed them 4 - 0 [sm=terms.gif]

Messi is not on fire now. Injured a lot these last two years... There's no creative midfield worth that name. Again, who's going to feed the attacks?

If the Belgians play well their cards they might make it.

british exil -> RE: World Cup (7/4/2014 3:24:35 PM)

Tonights the decider for France/Germany and Brazil/Columbia.

Can Germany play better? Will Brazil defend their hopes of wining the title at home?

BTW peskpesk hasn't tipped yet. Can anybody PM or tell him?

Good luck to all tippers, I hope we all have fun.

warspite1

No one. Firstly the World Cup was due to be held in 1942 not 1940, and secondly it was cancelled anyway due to the fact that Adolf Hitler decided the German attack needed strengthening. He did this not by changing to a 4-3-3 formation, but by putting numerous Panzer Divisions in his squad.

But the Russian referee unaccountably failed to call a foul when Rommel over ran Gamelin.

warspite1 -> RE: World Cup (7/14/2014 6:10:23 AM)

And so the World Cup competition comes to an end. And after a titanic tussle, full of twists and turns of teutonic proportions....

The winner, coming up on the rails thanks to a 100% finalists prediction, is Dixie.

1. Dixie 181
2. warspite1 179
3. BritishExil 170
4. th1207 158
5. ParkingTheBus (TulliusDetritus) 150
6. peskpesk 141
7. Ormster 123

That was great fun as always - congrats in particular to Dixie for winning, and british exil for being part of a great 3-way fight at the top and for organising [&o]

wings7 -> RE: World Cup (7/14/2014 2:47:47 PM)

Great final! The German's look tough and controlled much of the game.

Congrats Dixie.

It was a close race, only being decided in the last few matches.
I found the WC was more fun having the tips and comparing. Nothing except fame to be gained. Now Dixie can claim he knows a little about football.

In 2 years we can will the European Cup, I wonder if we will have more players in our tipping game.

Thanks to all who joined in.

Thanks for arranging it all. So when do I collect my prize? [:D]

british exil -> RE: World Cup (7/16/2014 11:03:27 AM)

Ehhmmmmmm, the prize?!

I think the losers decided the winner buys the drinks.

Orm -> RE: World Cup (8/7/2014 9:49:08 AM)

There seems to be a huge interest for football (soccer) in USA at the moment. Record attendance (109,318) watched training match between Manchester United and Real Madrid.
