pharmy -> Any effective way to kill a/c on the ground? (6/14/2014 11:16:07 AM)

I've been off WITP AE for a while and I have started practicing again as I am resuming a PBEM that was suspended. While trying a lot of practice rounds, I realize that no matter what I do, even 100 bomber or fighter bomber raids on AFs rarely kill more then a half dozen planes on airfields with over a hundred.I've been playing a lot of BTR where 2/3rds of my allied kills are ground kills, so it might just be the contrast that makes it seem different from before. WITP AE might have always been so frugal in ground kills. Is there any special way to do it effectively (from a JFB standpoint)? My starting PH is netting me only a max of 20 and Clark gets me 3 planes destroyed with a 100 Nells/Betties.

No way. What really make a difference is the presence or not of flak and if the airfield is overstack. You can get the true PH result by removing flak and reducing airfield so you overstack it.

Amongst other things, the following factors will influence the impact of your ground bombardment:

1. Overstacked airfields. More crowded=more damaged/destroyed airframes.
2. AAA. If your pilots can take their time hitting the target, they will be more effective.
3. CAP. Even a small CAP over the airfield will reduce the damage borne by bombardment.
4. Naval bombardment. Can be devastating if applied with aerial bombardment.
5. DL (Detection level) of the airfield. 9/10+ ensures more targetted bombing.
6. Airfield size. More bombs falling on a smaller airfield=more damage. Particularly if combined with number 1 above.
7. Ground bombing skill of your pilots.
8. Altitude of the attack. Lower=better generally, but with the related AAA risks.
9. Terrain. Open terrain will not reduce the damage. Bombing forested terrain will reduce efficacy of your bombing mission.
10. Weather / day:night. Influences ability of your pilots to find the airfield.
11. Factors that may be a consideration, but I'm not sure about: A. Durability rating of bombed airframes. More durable (I think, but am not sure)= less destroyed per se. B. AV support at the airfield. If planes are damaged beforehand and not repaired promptly, they may be more likely to wind up destroyed than if they can be repaired promptly.

I'm sure I'm forgetting something, but that's a quick list that I can come up with. Welcome back to the game!

Storm the beaches with infantry, capture the base....100% effective at destroying all enemy planes, all the time.[:D]

Seriously, I would add good leadership, good supply, raid coordination, air HQs, to Chickenboy's list.

And Nuclear weapons.[:D][:D][:D] GP

Thanks for the help - I didn't really think about DL and I usually used escort not sweep to get rid of the CAP. I think previously my best results came in newly built small AF in SoPac and now I was hitting large city airfields. just did a couple of tests on wake - size 3 - a few wildcats - after recon - and generally got 1-2 destroyed/several damaged which percentage wise is not bad at all.

Lowpe, thanks for giving me an idea of what to do with my after Andaman Island capture then becoming useless paratroopers.

I've been setting up a test game to relearn everything to get back at at an old pbem and maybe start a new one. Both my printer's toners are already empty, due to all the guides/references/my own sorted CSVs that I look at while I write up op tasks and reminders/notes. Should have just hooked up my laptop to my tv and saved a whole lot of rainforest. Or used a 20th century device - a physical notepad. Also got a whiteboard for supplementing the task list guru, just can't decide how to condense info onto a 50x50cm board and still have it be useful. Maybe I'll use it for intel report.Forgot how in depth and demanding this game really is, especially after playing Paradox,Shogun and football manager titles for the past year.

All the factors mentioned above are important but of them all, I would say that DL is the most important. You need to have recon over the base. This applies to any type bombing attack.

+1

In addition, Netties are not your best choice for AF bombing, unless you are doing it at +12 hex. Netties are 3x250kg loads, Helen's are 4x250kg. That 25% more bombs on target per ac, and that's a big deal. In addition, losing highly skilled Nettie pilots to ground attacks is a waste of training unless you have trained up some IJN bomber pilots in ground only.

+1 for Lowpe.

Maybe better to play Allied side if you have interests about tactical and strategic level bombing.
With 500 kg payload per bomber I think you cannot do these such of strikes.
