CassioM -> Training mission: Fellowship 2012 Exercise (NEW VERSION v1.1) (6/14/2014 8:09:54 PM)

A game of cat-and-mouse between the two most modern submarines from the U.S Navy and the Royal Navy during an exercise in the Bahamas.

The crew of the Virginia-class, fast-attack submarine USS New Mexico (SSN-779) joins the Royal Navy’s newest Astute-class, fast-attack submarine HMS Astute (S119) for the Fellowship 2012 exercise where the boats try to out-flank, out-maneuver and out-wit each other.

Do not be the mouse. Find and kill them before they get you.

It will not be easy to kill without being killed.

EDIT:

NEW VERSION v1.1 (08 JUL 14)

-minor cosmetic fixes
-patched to the latest build (Release Candidate 6 B553)

Very fun and simple scenario. My fortunes were rather different the two times I played it, but I still had fun and it's good for practicing my horrible submarine-handling skills.

Flankerk -> RE: Training mission: Fellowship 2012 Exercise (6/15/2014 10:34:06 AM)

Played as UK and got the win, all working well and like the orders etc.
Not as sure about the behaviour of the opposing sub to be truthful, the Virginia went to cruise 20 knots so was reasonably easy to pick out, I have a funny feeling it also occasionally went to active sonar.
To be fair it largely depends how difficult a scenario you'd like it to be, I did wonder if it would be worth plotting some of the course for each side, and the speed so it didn't come in at relatively high speed?

Vici Supreme -> RE: Training mission: Fellowship 2012 Exercise (6/17/2014 2:10:12 PM)

Enjoyed that simple and short scenario during my break! [:)] Good scenario to test behavior and different tactics of the two subs.
If I can suggest something: Personally, I'd like to have my target identified before engaging it, even if I know my contact is most likely enemy. "Engage non-hostiles" and "engage opportunity target" were both set on yes. I think you could add some more realism by changing these.

Regards

Ran this one 4 times in 25 min - very interesting.

1: UK player, detected the US moving at 20Knts, stalked and struck - win
2: US player, starting position event popped us both into weapons range, instant detection, instant firing (3 seconds into the game) near instant mutual destruction
3: US player, detected UK sub within a couple min and the ROE took over, - win
4: US player, turned off the ROE issues noted above, found the UK sub moving at 16knts, stalked and struck - win

Would agree with Supreme on the ROE settings.
Not sure why the AI was running at high speed, perhaps the Sprint & Drift function is turned on for them - I don't think that's needed here with the small area and excellent sonars

Thanks.

Hello friends. Thank you for giving your opinions about my scenario.

I realized that the game has some problems in the behavior of the units. Especially submarines.

It is not normal submarines run at 20 knots during a combat scenario. I believe that they would be more discreet. I was unable to change this behavior on mission editor or with changes in ROE.

Another thing I noticed. It is very easy to detect or be detected between 1 and 5 knots. I actually imagine it must be very difficult to detect these modern submarines when they are at that speed. The devs should look for that too.

Finally, I also realized that even when we totally stopped, our boats are changing course and watching the opponent without moving. Honestly, I never seen any ship or submarine change its course without accelerating.

I will make new versions of this scenario when these bugs are being fixed.

Thank you guys.

How far away were they from each other when detected?

I ran a quick test and a stationary Virginia only detected an Astute moving at 2 knots when it was 3 nautical miles away-well within torpedo range.

Reckon it definitely can work. As well as the patrol, set the manual course and speed setting per waypoint etc. I think that would take priority until the waypoints are done, or it detects the target.
In efefct the manual pathing would take place until the mission took over.
I've certainly done the same say with AAW patrols, manually plot a course say away from an SAG, the plane will do so until the end of its pathing then return to the mission.

Hello Coiler12 and Flankerk

Coiler12: I also noticed the ease of finding these submarines traveling at 2 knots. Usually less than 5 miles with Virginia and Astute.

Flankerk: I avoided using waypoints to have more variation during the mission. Otherwise, the submarines always pass on the same places because of the waypoints. I used the option "ASW Patrol" in mission editor. I'll follow your advice and do some tests using the "Recon" option.

Thanks
