For severely damaged ships, its rather annoying that they have to make it back to base on their own power.

In Real Life, damaged carriers and the like would be given a tow, which of course, they might sink under.

Its silly though, to expect a carrier to sail at 2 knots back home. For that matter, 2 knots? Seems to me that speed always linearly decreasing with damage leads to this silly situation in the first place. I suppose a better damage model would fix this...

I think that they are modelling the fact that someone sent a tow out to the CV. Since tugs aren't in the game, it is a basic assumption because there would be no way to get home without one. I guess that DD could tow you, but the tow line is not shown in the game.

I believe I saw somewhere in the Manual or in the Forum that the minimum 2 hex per turn movement for a severly damaged ship abstractly models a tow at sea. After all, how fast could a couple of DD's tow a severely damaged CV under realistic weather conditions?

I'm sure there is an old salt who would know. Anyone?

Yes, actually that is exactly what the game models. Having had experence with deep sea ships, I can put in my two cents. About the best speed possible for any sort of large towing operation is 2 knots. And remember, this is a jury rigged sort of thing as warships are not really designed to be towed. What happened usually is that the crew secured the anchor then disconneted the anchor chain and attached a long tow wire to the tug. However, in WWII, many times the towing was done by a DD or CA using thieir standard mooring lines. A very difficult and dangerous operation and if there is any sort of weather or wind (even the mildest) the ship being towed tends to skew back and forth and with the hawser frequently part. Even a steel towing wire is at great risk at any speed over 2 knots.

So they got it exactly right. Be thankful that it was modeled into the game.

People tend to forget just how nasty the weather is in this part of the world. Storms come and go without warning. Even ships the size of BB's took damage from monster storms. The act of towing ships in these kinds of conditions is almost comical. Falls in the "NOT POSSIBLE" catagory. Even the use of replenishment ships should be recoded to be weather specific. Sometimes I think we get away too easy in the damage catagory from weather effects in this game.

I think that the realtively quick way in which ships acquire sys damage compensates for that shortcoming.
