Currently the game system is focused on the 1980s, but in the future what decade would you most like to see get attention after we close out 80s Europe that IS NOT WW2?

These are just stir the pot questions to see what you guys are interested in. As it was stated in our last dev call, "we won't live long enough to hit every theater and time". Sad but true barring a lottery win. Again throw us a few comments too as to why a decade would be cool to see.

Thanks.

I'm not really a big fan of anything beyond the mid 90's due to the technology changes so I voted everything earlier than that time period. For theater, which may affect time the frame, I would really like to see some Middle East coverage, 60-70's.

Theaters will be on tap for Friday's question.

TheWombat_matrixforum -> RE: Next Modern/Cold War Era? (7/17/2014 12:33:55 PM)

I like contemporary (2010s) because it lets us do some exploration of possible conflicts. Of course, some folks are politically adverse to modeling wars that are ongoing or might actually happen, but I think the risk is worth the gain. The challenges are modeling a lot of the newer C3I tech, the prevalence of asymmetrical warfare, and the paucity of data on how truly contemporary systems would actually interact. We really have no idea how top-end Russian or Chinese tanks perform in combat, do we? Do we even really have a sense of how front line Russian or Chinese soldiers might operate against other first-line forces? But it would be interesting, especially if we could model airmobile/airborne/amphibious stuff.

Alex1812 -> RE: Next Modern/Cold War Era? (7/17/2014 12:42:34 PM)

In current game we have almost all we need to represent Cold War in Europe during 1950-1980. So if you want a new Cold War game I am voting for 2010. But my real prefer is the historical Middle East campaign 1973 [:)]

I second your comments, TheWombat.

I went for Sixties thinking of Vietnam. It's just far enough along from WW2 to be different game experience. Seventies is abit to close to the eighties we have now.

That could be interesting as well. Though at the strategic level, any WP invasion of Germany in the 1960s would pretty much have escalated to nukes from the get-go, as our conventional forces were somewhat anemic, especially with so many people committed to Southeast Asia.

Phoenix100 -> RE: Next Modern/Cold War Era? (7/17/2014 6:19:26 PM)

Sci-fi!!! Why not? It's all hypothetical anyway, if it's not an actual historical conflict. I vote for the future, though I see I am in a desperate minority... WW2 Eastern Front is what I'd really really really really like the game to do.

I second the request for sci-fi! This game engine is my current favorite. It is a lot of fun to play. However, it is just a game - a great game! The simulation aspects would work in the sci-fi arena as well as in the perceived realism of a historical context.

Hammer's Slammers? Ogre/G.E.V.?

DO EET! [:D]

Edit: Trademark issues. OOPS [sm=terms.gif]

jack54 -> RE: Next Modern/Cold War Era? (7/17/2014 10:24:58 PM)

Ok I voted 60's but it was a tough choice.

I am assuming after 2.1 with 250 hexes or less... this could give us VietNam and also a [US vs. Cuba] [Nato or US vs.Soviets] after the missile crisis.

We would need airmobile stuff for 'nam but it would be interesting IMHO.

If we are talking current engine and hex sizes I'd say 70's...less missiles and thermal sights might make it feel different.

I'm still dreaming about 'desert tank battles' with this engine though... Arab/Israel or Africa Corp/Desert Rats.

You could make your own custom BattleTech mod for personal use. [8D] Of course it would really be a Leg unit and not Tracked.

Yeah, but look at the size of those legs!!! [:D]

Good Hunting.

Plodder -> RE: Next Modern/Cold War Era? (7/18/2014 12:02:06 AM)

I went for sci-fi as well. Make a generic but interesting future history up and then let the mods roll in. Renegade Legion anyone?

wodin -> RE: Next Modern/Cold War Era? (7/18/2014 12:17:14 AM)

I too would love a Sci Fri game aswell. Something along the lines of WH40K!!

As Slitherine if Games Workshop would be OK with it. It's far removed from their table top game..and I reckon it would be a MASSIVE seller.

jds1978 -> RE: Next Modern/Cold War Era? (7/18/2014 1:41:21 AM)

The vast majority of historical conflicts after WWII have been asymmetrical and/or wars of national liberation. Proxy wars with guerrillas and small units. The Arab/Israeli being the exception.

I think the logical step is either WW2 or 1973 Golan with this game engine

wodin -> RE: Next Modern/Cold War Era? (7/18/2014 2:14:46 AM)

I know alot of people want an Arab \ Israeli War game, holds no interest what so ever for me so I'd pass on that one. Also it's convincing Slitherine, I'm hoping FCRS sold well enough for them to give you more lee way creatively.

76mm -> RE: Next Modern/Cold War Era? (7/18/2014 7:07:49 AM)

Other than WW2, the only setting (other than late 80s Europe) that might interest me are the Arab/Israeli wars.

Phoenix100 -> RE: Next Modern/Cold War Era? (7/18/2014 9:11:29 AM)

Arab/Israeli? Nah. Count me out. I might not even buy it.

Why not something closer to the present series - like Ukraine seeks closer ties with Europe, tensions escalate, Nato moves a task force into Ukraine, Russia invades eastern Ukraine, Nato takes them on - something unlikely but topical like that?

Actually, I'm pretty sure that is the scenario for the next modern version of Combat Mission.

Hexagon -> RE: Next Modern/Cold War Era? (7/18/2014 10:47:38 AM)

Hard decide one period... if i think in middle east i prefer see 60-70 but in a west VS east i see more attractive 50-60 in a what if like FCP

For me the lower interest in in post 2000 and pre WWII... i dont know how can deal engine with masive infantry combats, the lack of movility reduce a lot the speed and with a realtime system... even 1 day battles are to small and here you are not in "virgin" terrain.

I cant decide what vote but i select 60s because you have Middle east, early WWIII (even when i prefer 1945-1959 period for this).

Yeah, but I can't handle the (lack of) significant AI, friendly or enemy, in that game.

SwampYankee68 -> RE: Next Modern/Cold War Era? (7/18/2014 2:51:58 PM)

I voted 2010s. That said, there is such a dearth of games set in Vietnam... I've played HPS's Squad Battles / Tour of Duty.. OK but I'd like something different. Waaay back in the 80's Microprose published what I think was the only strategic level Vietnam game.

Skeleton -> RE: Next Modern/Cold War Era? (7/18/2014 7:48:26 PM)

I would love to see something akin to Next War: Korea. I wouldn't mind seeing the Korean War period, both historical and hypothetical. It is a sadly overlooked conflict. Great game by the way, I plan on supporting anything you guys do with this engine.

SwampYankee68 -> RE: Next Modern/Cold War Era? (7/19/2014 1:18:11 PM)

That is an excellent idea!! Or even a second Korean Conflict set in the 1980's!

For inspiration, Larry Bond's Red Phoenix is a fantastic read on that very subject. IMO it is the equal of Red Storm Rising.
