choowee -> DAR Falklands 1982 PBEM-No USXpat- (7/26/2014 11:38:20 AM)

I am writing a during action report to assist USXpat with his new scenario Falklands 1982. We are playing a PBEM. I am by no means a great writer, so bare with me. I will try to describe my plans and action briefly and with pics!

The invasion of the Falklands has commenced by Argentina to reclaim Las Malvinas. I am commanding the Argentine forces. Battleplan is to use special forces on the west island to control and harass victory points, we will blockade the Falkland Sound with our navy, and use our core combat forces to defend the east island, which we consider the main objective.

Turn two complete.

After a week of operations, ALL objectives are under Argentine control. The Royal Marine defenders are in disarray, but they are still holding out, mostly due to poor amphibious operations on my part [:@]

Week 3

Island defenders capitulate, prisoners will be allowed to return to England.

Argentine forces begin digging in, will defend the entire east island to keep British forces separated. Pucaras are able to operate from island airfields and will provide combat support, jets cannot use the airfields so they will have to fly from the mainland. I order a squadron of A-4's to ready in the theater options.

I chose the Exocet air option to attack the anticipated invasion fleet at sea. The ARA destroyer Santisima Trinidad is scouting sea lane approaches. I hope to get some strikes in early as he nears.

Week 4

Now in full control of the islands. Repositioning air defenses and artillery. Troops move to high ground.

Week 5

Shored up defenses. Supplies look good. My forces consist mostly of infantry and artillery. Only have six AFV's on the island. I will start activating the air squadrons once the British are in sight.

Week 6

British fleet approaches the Falklands. Naval and air actions commenced...at the end of the engagements the 25 de Mayo is sunk, Gen. Belgrano is damaged, and a few destroyers are lost. The remaining Argentine Armada is ordered to port.

-- -- -- NEWS FLASH -- -- -- Four A-4's limp home from a flight of 15, having spotted the British carriers...and report both heavily damaged and presumed sunk!!!

choowee -> RE: DAR Falklands 1982 -No USXpat- (7/27/2014 11:37:49 AM)

We are in half-week turns now. British naval forces spotted closer to the islands. We had another successful air strike, sinking a destroyer and missile cruiser. My navy has withdrawn and we haven't seen the landing fleet yet, but have Skyhawks on stand-by for more strikes for when we do. We are winning the naval war, which may prove the deciding factor!

British commandos arrive on west islands! I didn't have any air on interdiction [:@]

Small scale special operations actions continue on the west island. My plan is to continue to hopscotch objective hexes using helo transport.

The British have landed on the east island, near Goose Green. We are waiting for the first big test.

I ordered my AML 90s to engage a Royal Marine company, as seen above, losing two for no damage to the Brits. Not a good sign of things to come.

First major combat occurs at Goose Green. Argentine forces overwhelmed against staggering odds and surrender.

Interesting looking scenario is there a chance I could have copy to look over ? Are ghe British carriers sunk ?

Ian

choowee -> RE: DAR Falklands 1982 -No USXpat- (7/29/2014 11:57:01 PM)

@Sapper32- Carriers sunk, but he still has a navy, and mine was sent to port. I am playtesting USXpat's scenario, I will let him know.

British forces move toward Port Stanley. I intercepted and made a counterattack to disrupt his advance. We had some success, but then fell victim to a one round turn burn. Bad luck, now we are caught in the open..

I hit a troop transport arriving at Port Howard with a squadron of Mirages, may be disastrous for the British. Have to see next turn if the troops get to shore, all ships sunk.

More fighting toward Port Stanley. I decided to counterattack to capture Goose Green.

Tough terrain ahead for the British.

choowee -> RE: DAR Falklands 1982 -No USXpat- (7/31/2014 11:46:42 PM)

Spent the last turn, all three combat rounds, strafing British forces to weaken any attack on Port Stanley. Many of the Argentine forces are disrupted, fatigued from either combat or lack of supply, which is at a trickle now. Which meant no actions at Goose Green.

Hi Choowee. I am Argentine. I thank you for playing this battle the Argentine side. In Puerto Argentino there were 6 (six) Aeromacchi MB 339. I think that they were jets. (Im sorry for my English).

choowee -> RE: DAR Falklands 1982 -No USXpat- (8/3/2014 2:28:07 PM)

Walkra, you are correct.

choowee -> RE: DAR Falklands 1982 -No USXpat- (8/3/2014 2:37:45 PM)

The conflict ended after turn 15, giving a marginal victory to the British on points (per USXpat, he may consider this an Argentine win). Argentina still holds Port Stanley and is threatening Goose Green. There is a substantial force of British on the west island that is fully under British control. They would cause a problem once ferried over. I would need need fresh troops to reinforce and hold if the battle continued.

Great scenario. USXpat is making some adjustments based on this play test. I really enjoyed playing it, and it held for me the feeling of the strategic and tactical choices I believe they had to make during the conflict.

The last two screens show the final tolls.

Thanks for following, hope you enjoyed it!

Great write up Choowee, thank you for helping test it! Well played. A few things on both sides were not working as intended but didn't impact play too much.

The Royal Navy was severely decimated. The sinking of the carriers was disastrous, killing English supply and air support (10). I figured the Mirage V's were active, but they were static the whole time.

All of the items not working as intended during play were fixed and tested yesterday. Thus far, testing has been done without the use of the AA patch, so I will be looking at implementing that and testing further. I welcome other players giving it a go and letting me know if they find any anomalies.

Can say that designing, testing and playing smaller scenarios like this is a breath of fresh air. Where TR 42-45 took 2 years to test; this only two weeks to reach a similar state.

Thanks Choowee!

Great job guys looks like a bit of a bloodbath on both sides.
