Sadly we did not have the money to modernise all 5 ships of the class [:(]. Barham and Malaya thus entered WWII with only a modest upgrade package. Queen Elizabeth and Valiant, being modernised later, received a more modern armament package than the Warspite, but all three were useful additions to the fleet during the war - with that interesting mix of old (hull) and new (superstructure) they looked like sex on a stick too [:)] Only the South Dakotas (mean, moody, mofo's) came close in the looks dept.

I'll take Warspite or any "R" class over the US BBs with their kindergarden experience level!!

Having said that, the Warspite was torpedoed off PH in one of my games too!! She sits being fixed in LA as we speak.

As a JFB I would expect nothing else from you - the Grand Old Lady is quite a scalp for the Axis after all [:)]

you'll find Dreadnought an entirely different read from Castles of Steel! In D, all the warfare is political, & the shots are exchanged in diplomatic exchanges, political speeches published in newspapers, governments directing changes in naval strategy, & internecine warfare in the British/German naval commands. The climax of the book centers on the design & (unbelievably fast) construction of HMS Dreadnought, & her transformative influence on the navies of the world.

In my game vs the AI the Japanese know how important she is - Warspite has just finished the initial repairs in Seattle and is ready to go back to sea but there are 3 subs lurking off the coast (hexes 208.52, 208.53 and 208.54) waiting for her no doubt.

I have several AMs working the area on ASW and some more DD's coming up from SF & LA, as well as KV Wetaskiwin earmarked to escort Warspite to the canal (I may as well try and get her to the rest of the RN in Ceylon).

However I know as soon as she hits open water one of those subs is going to nail her, so for now, her crew are enjoying some extended liberty in the Pacific Northwest.

Thanks for the comparative, jmalter. I enjoyed Castles of Steel, but don't think that Dreadnought would be my proverbial cup of tea. If I wanted to read about political posturing, who said what in the newspapers and the like, I'd pick up any number of other recent publications on modern warfare.

The parts I recall liking best about Dreadnought were the profiles and interplay between the British Royals, Kaiser Wilhelm, Bismark, and Admirals Fisher & Tirpitz. It basically focuses on the world before WWI, from the late 19th century to literally the moment before the Great War begins, weighing heavily on the naval perspective and of course the effects of HMS Dreadnought and the naval race which followed. I found I liked it more then I thought I would, but if you're picking it up expecting it to be exactly like Castles of Steel you'll probably be disappointed.

I suspect that AirGriff has a bounty out on the Warspite in my game after the drubbing she just gave him. The Warspite is a very nice ship with radar and great starting XP.

I just finished reading "Dreadnough" and "Castles of Steel"

Castles of Steels is a war book, no questions asked...
Dreadnough... not so much, I was expecting a book heavily focused on the development of dreadnought and/ or the dreadnough race.

What I got instead was an interesting book (don't get me wrong, it is a good book), about the key British and German actors from the late 19th century until the start of WW1. So, lots of information about the the Kaiser, his father and grandfather, Bismark, Tirpitz, Von Holstein, Von Bulow, other ministers, Queen Victoria, her sons/ daughters, Gladstone, Chamberlain, Churchill. Fisher, Jellicoe, the list goes on and on.

Not so much "playing" as bungling as the allies.

To be fair to the Grand Old Lady, the new pride of the Italian fleet is performing as well under her new colours as she normally does for the Royal Navy.

Sounds like you play the Allies in MWIF as competently as I do AllenK [;)]

With HMS Warspite now batting for the other side I feel an automatic Axis victory is about to happen [8D]

No, definitely not World In Flames [:(].... um...something I'm good at? [&:] I must confess I'm struggling here... oh I know, I have been known to put on a rather successful beauty pageant or two. You may of heard of them - they are held under the banner "Australian Beauties" and run in the thicky General Discussion forum [:)]

Anyways, back on topic, has it been a full week? Ironic isn't it that a thread designed to disparage one of history's finest, most celebrated fighting vessels (and the officers and men that fought with her) has been one of the most visited and posted on in this forum in the last few weeks?

Apart from a couple of posters [8|], the remaining posts have been supportive of this fine ship - as I would have expected from the calibre of the majority of contributors to this forum. Regardless of nationality, most of us can appreciate fighting vessels with proud histories such as HMS Victory, HMS Ark Royal, USS Enterprise, USS Constitution, and HMS Warspite - for her sterling service in two World Wars (and of course her gorgeous looks [;)] - rightly has a place among such [&o].
