Matrix and Slitherine produce some battlers and tactical games that are a lot more 'hard core' than most, in the sense that they're both more realistic and more strategically involved than a lot of the mainstream faire. Aside from Matrix & Slitherine there is Paradox Interactive, famous for their grand strategy titles. HPS Simulations would be another and, to the extent you count VASSAL, perhaps GMT Games.

Do you folks know of any other producers of 'grognard' style war-games?

This meta-genre/style of game is super-niche, as far as I can tell; you'll find plenty of FPS folks who've played Ghost Recon or Flashpoint but try to get people interested in anything more in-depth than Total War can be a challenge.

http://battlefront.com/

Makers of the Combat Mission and Strategic Command series

http://graviteam.com/

Makers of the Achtung Panzer/Graviteam Tactics series of games, although there's really only 1-2 games in the series so far

Reminder that John Tiller has split off from HPS Simulations and publishes games on his own now.

Beyond that you're really looking more at individual developers/individual games rather than whole publishers, such as Unity of Command, Ultimate General Gettysburg and so on.

Shrapnel (also of new updated Steel Panthers fame), Schwerpunkt (probably makes the most hardcore games I've ever seen), HPS (historical simulations games), Some lite wargaming sites Killerbee software. (Makes generic wargames. No special subject or era. Just good old fashioned strategy). NWSonline makes a lot of naval games I think.

No links provided because that is not fair to Matrixgames to quickly direct you to other sale sites. If you want to find them though, google is your friend. [:)]

Most of the grand strategy titles I've seen in the past have been American Civil War, World War 2 or Napoleonic; only the last is my speed, but I do note that there is apparently a huge market for ACW and WW2 grognard games, at least as compared to the Diadochoi and Byzantine cataphract markets.

Joni Nuutinen makes a series of titles for the Android market under the label 'Conflict Series' which are genuine 'wargames'.

There is Decision Games
http://decisiongames.com/wpsite/

MultiManPublishing who provide ASL on behalf of Hasbro.

Hasbro also owns the Avalon Hill Label and the Axis and Allies series.

There is DVG Dan Verssen Games.

But after that I think you will find you need to start googling table top wargaming companies for additional examples.

Awesome, thanks for all the suggestions.
I had no idea that the Great Battles of History series also had three Windows games released in the late '90s.
