scottb613 -> NEWB - F1 Attack ? (8/9/2014 10:27:40 PM)

Hi Folks,

OK - just purchased Command and I'm working on getting my feet wet... I'm familiar with Harpoon so this isn't too far a stretch for me...

I'm having difficulty getting the "F1 Attack" to work properly... I started off with a rather large sceneario - 1967 Gulf of Tonkin on Yankee Station... I set up my alpha strike and everything seemed to be working well - I had a significant number of Intruders with iron bombs in my strike - I had them hugging the ground in a low level EMCON passive run into my two bridge targets... Everything seemed to be going well and I used F1 to designate my targets as I arrived at Hanoi - all lined up with minimal losses on the way in - planes passed over the targets - but - nobody dropped any bombs - same thing happened with multiple air groups - no joy... By the third pass the AAA decimated my bombers... Arrrgh... Any idea what I'm doing wrong ??? I select my air group - press F1 - then select the target - that's it - right ??? Any help greatly appreciated...

Regards,
Scott

Check what altitude your aircraft are set to. Could be they are below min height to release weapons.

Hi Ryan,

Thanks for taking the time to respond...

Yep - in my first run they were too low... Then I tried a quickly built test scenario with 4 unarmed targets and 4 A-4 Skyhawk bombers with a mix of 500 and 1000 lbs bombs - and a higher altitude (1500 Feet) - same thing - planes just circle around and never release...

I guess what I'm missing is this - when the plane's altitude and speed are set to "auto" - if the plane was truly too low - shouldn't the plane change it's altitude automatically to what is needed - before it gets to the target... I ended my "plotted" course well before the target and it was just on it's F1 Attack... Even after it made it over the target it didn't try and climb - they just circled around waiting to be shot...

Regards,
Scott

The quickest way to get the "why not firing?" question is to bring up the manual weapon allocation window. You will then get a precise rundown of the reasons for each shooter-weapon-target combination.

We used to do it this way during the early beta builds. Then we discovered that players have a really hard time relinquishing control; they'd rather have their virtual subordinates obey them and die rather than do their own thing and live. At some point you would unavoidably come upon a situation where you really, really, really want a unit to do X and instead it goes off and does Y (in terms of offensive manouvering). We've been there and have the t-shirt (and "bug" reports).

When you are telling a unit to go at an explicit throttle-X and altitude-Y you are effectively ordering it to follow these instructions "or face a court martial when you get back". If you wish to trust your units to select for themselves the optimum altitude & throttle for weapon release (and they almost always will) then simply uncheck the "manual" checkboxes for throttle and altitude control.

Hi Sunburn,

Thanks for responding as well - this is definitely not your fathers Harpoon... :) I'm pretty impressed so far...

I'm not sure I follow 100% - so if not on a plotted course - but I am on an [F1] Attack run with "auto" speed and altitude - should ground hugging bombers climb to the appropriate height for the bombs they are planning to drop - or - must the altitude be changed manually ???

I did try the [Ctrl] [F1] as well and in the heat of battle - but - it said something like not within range - or - something like that - I recall the line was too long for the window so I could only see a portion of it being truncated... I'll take a screenshot next time...

I'll play around with it and do some more testing in a less hectic environment...

Any shot you can free me from the silly - image link restriction for newb posts ? I am a real customer and sometimes a screenshot is worth a thousand words ???

Regards,
Scott

Hi Scott,
I'm a newb myself + never ever played Harpoon before [:)] Hopefully the following can help though:

I could only see a portion of it being truncated
You have a horizontal scroll bar at the bottom of this window so that you can read the whole line explaining the reason why it does not fire. Then the manual further explains every of these reasons (section: "why my *#!!@ weapon does not fire").
Also, beware of altitudes: the altitude of your aircraft is generally given above sea level, but the correct release altitude for bombs is above the target, ie above ground level. Check the elevation of your targets by scrolling the mouse on it and reading the info box (if your target is at 2000ft above sea level, and you must release your bombs at min 3000ft above target, then you have to fly at 5000ft min).
I am having a hard time myself to manually release these kind of bombs (you may want to see my earlier post asking for help on khark island raid scenario).

Hi Pcoud,

Yeah - thanks...

LOL - I think I'm off to the bombing range for some practice...
