jarraya -> Ship ECM always active even after turning off (8/20/2014 10:20:53 AM)

Hi guys. Once again, I can't get enough of this game. It's amazing.

I've spotted what could be a bug:
- My convoy of ships was attached by a torpedo.
- Convoy ROE was set to auto evade.
- Ships act as expected, turning and going to flank speed.
- When I looked in Unit view they all had their JAM on. I assumed this means some sort of torpedo jamming equipment, again expected behaviour in an attack.
- Torpedo missed my ship and self destructed.
- I then killed the sub with a helo and clear the area.
- Danger over.
- I go back to Unit view to reform my convoy and I see that their JAM symbols still on.
- Thinking that jamming is likely to give you away very easily, I click on Sensors. ECM is NOT active.
- Just in case, I activate EMC and close the window. I then deactivate ECM and close the window.
- Ships remain in JAM.

Perhaps this is a bug?

Check Doctrine "Ignore EMCON while under attack" for your ship group.
Switch to "No" and turn off OECM then.

This doctrine allows units to use their full sensor capability under attack, though OECM will probably not help vs. torpedoes.
Probably not a bug, rather there is a longer time out for the "under attack" check after the last (known) attacking weapon contact is lost.

I let the scenario run on for about another 2 hours game time and still the JAM remained and I was unable to turn it off. I think this is a bug.

When would it make sense for that EMCON to revert?

Mike,

I'm way out of my depth here and I'm sure there are people out there with some useful knowledge of doctrine and procedure that can provide a better answer, but I would go on the assumption that you want to jam until the danger passes (torpedo runs out of fuel or missiles crash into the water) and then get back to using your own sensors to find the sub.

From what I've read here:
http://www.aiad.it/aiad_res/cms/documents/WASSC310.pdf
http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/MONITOR/ISSUE3-4/joseph.html

torpedo countermeasures and jamming create a lot of underwater noise and therefore would actually degrade the ships' sensors. That's probably not modelled in Command (do I hear you say 'yet'?), but for the sake of gameplay, perhaps the mechanism is for the ships ECM to activate as part of the evasion and the stay on until the player decides to switch them off.

Jorge
