Antarian -> ship names files not working? (8/24/2014 7:32:31 PM)

I have placed my shipnames file in my customization folder, new ships are NOT using the file, still using vanilla names. This worked mid-game before in previous version. Also put shipnames file in main directory, still no joy.

Is there a change in Universe that it will only use a modded shipnames file at the start of a new game?

I did not touch the vanilla shipNames file in the Distant Worlds Universe directory, but placed my modified version in the Customization/DW Extended Universe sub folder(I use this Mod). Then at the startup screen, I clicked on Change Theme, changed theme back to original version and then back again to Distant Worlds Extended Universe. This seemed to solve the problem for me by reloaded the theme files and letting the changed files take effect.

Let us know if this works for you.

Nope, tried that last night, still no joy.

For this game, back to the ol' pen and paper 'print out 50 million ship names and manually assign in the ships list' play. Micro-management hell but ship naming is a BIG part of the enjoyment I get out of games like this.

REALLY annoyed they didn't find a way to allow custom race design ship naming (individual ships, not class types in main racial design) for this game. Would have been fairly easy to do it seems to me. Not much improvement in modding from the previous version, and, as many have noted, map design is a clunky buggy interface nightmare and not worth doing imo.

They didn't change the format of the shipNames file from the last version to Universe, did they?.... because I was just in editing my previous systems names files, and see they have done away with commas now in that file?...

WHY OH WHY would they change stuff like that!!!!????

Fishers of Men -> RE: ship names files not working? (8/26/2014 7:57:09 PM)

Instructions at the top of file say that commas are required to separate ship names.

This looks O.K. I wonder if the name has a limit on the number of characters it can have, or something like that. Take a look at the Absolutely Huge Ship Name Mod by Hannable for more help. This is the one I use. I added my own carrier names to his file.

ehsumrell1 -> RE: ship names files not working? (8/27/2014 9:58:00 PM)

@Antarian:
Also try this...

1. Use Notepad and open your shipNames file.

2. Save it as a UTF-8 instead of ANSI file. (I think the file encoding is your problem)
and replace it back in your themes main directory.

3. THEN repeat what Fishers Of Men stated.

I hope this solves your problem! [:)]
