Squirmer -> Turn 14 (3/16/2003 5:23:04 PM)

Little to report. One more BT-7 dies at the hands of the PaK38 gunners. In central and rear areas routed grunts huddle together for comfort.

Scharfschütze -> (3/16/2003 8:12:46 PM)

Shot up some Rifle squads near the red rear VHs. They are positively helpless against my Panzers, and fled three hexes when I opened fire on a neighbouring unit.

In the north, yet another BT is destroyed, and the current wave of cossacks decimated.

Three of the central VHs are captured by scouts, the enemy forces here are in total confusion.

Still, at least a dozen KVs and T-34s are still out there, so we have to tread carefully lest our hard-won gains be undone by recklessness.:cool:

Squirmer -> Turn 15 (3/17/2003 2:37:22 AM)

BTs fight back and get an immobilised Pz II.

Centre is a total mess, grunts are completely useless but we may hang on to the rear, T-34s are trying to help.

Scharfschütze -> (3/17/2003 3:59:54 AM)

Fortuna has been smiling on me again: A 75mm arty round tumbles through an open hatch on a KV, crippling the turret :p

We drive the enemy from the central VHs, kill a KV here, smash another BT-7 and massacre infantry in the russian rear, T-34s present or not.

More cossacks died, too:rolleyes:

Squirmer -> Turn 16 (3/17/2003 7:53:55 AM)

An unusual turn. Russian infantry actually get to do some shooting due to total lack of German artillery. Results are minimal but satisfying :) This was in the centre.

In the south I am amazed to still be in possession of my rear VHs. To celebrate T-34s manage to hit something twice! A Pz II is dead and a Pz III damaged.

Scharfschütze -> (3/17/2003 8:12:33 PM)

We retaliate with full fury, and it is a massacre.

We damage a T-34 in the russian rear, maim surrounding infantry, catch two KVs in a crossfire of PAK fire, and hold a grim harvest among the northern cossacks and crewmen. Topping it off, 105mm shells tumble into the last (to our knowledge) remaining intact soviet fromation, the engineers near the bridge. No casualities, though I think they are somewhat unenthusiastic right now.

We think that we have the enemy close to his breaking point!

Squirmer -> Turn 17 (3/18/2003 2:13:28 AM)

We're not quite dead yet.

Desperately counter-attacking in the centre, we reclaim two VHs and kill 2 tanks by infantry assault. Also dead are a Kubelwagen, an FJ squad and a truck.

Rear defences take out another Pz III. Germans seem to be thinning out here but this is probably just an illusion.

On the other hand we did lose 2 T-34s and a KV, all thanks to the accursed 88s which I am unable to smoke out anymore.

It's all a bit of a lost cause but we're going out in a blaze of glory!

Scharfschütze -> (3/18/2003 3:49:00 AM)

Blaze of glory indeed! I must say that I am amazed by the soviet ability to go for another attack!

What is blazing right now are the woods east of the central VHs were massed enemy troops just found out that I had a previously SNAFU 105mm battery becoming available right when I needed it. That should stop them cold... :mad: or dead:mad: :mad:

A quick dash by a daring Kübelwagen secures the northern VHs for our cause, I´m sure some poor cossacks will get ordered to retake them. Good Luck to these, they will need it :p

With the engineers still suppressed by our recent barrage, we launch a quick probe there to make it worthwhile, and drive them back.

In the east, russian tanks are keeping us at bay- for the moment!

Squirmer -> Turn 18 (3/18/2003 4:48:00 AM)

"Daring Kubelwagen" eh? Not gamey at all ... :rolleyes: I can see phalanxes of trucks lined up for a last minute charge too.

Not complaining, if my hold on the VHs were secure it wouldn't be a problem.

Pushed some FJ back from the central VHs a bit. Don't think I'll get to repeat the performance though, Mr Nebelwerfer showed up again.

Only two more turns of pain to go ... :)

Scharfschütze -> (3/18/2003 5:40:21 PM)

The soviet strength is concentrated in the centre, and the other sectors are crumbling. the engineer platoon in the south is no more, and the crews of the four shot-up KVs were gunned down as well. The northern sector sees the demise of yet another BT-7, while two more are engaged at close range, but fail to brew up despite penetrations. Once again, 105mm grenades smash into the now fiercely aflame woods in the centre...

Squirmer -> Turn 19 (3/19/2003 2:12:44 AM)

Brave BTs kill a Pz II. Other than that not much. Just waiting for the final German assault ...

Scharfschütze -> (3/19/2003 5:43:30 AM)

Once more, we drive the soviet hordes away from the central VHs, and sent artillery fire into their fleeing ranks. The occasional crewmen is shot further south, while the north sees another go at the BT-7s. After exceptionally lousy Pz-III shooting, we have one turretless BT and another that required continued attention by our 75mm light howitzers.

Squirmer -> Turn 20 (3/19/2003 6:30:53 AM)

Pain is nearly over now ...

Re-took two central VHs but I'm sure the Germans will have them back. That leaves "home base" only in Russian hands. This plus the enormous number of casualties inflicted will ensure a heavy defeat on points. At least the horses don't get counted separately :)

Scharfschütze -> Victory! (3/19/2003 7:28:30 AM)

After a very hard-fought battle, we rule the field. Attacking from the south and west with more Fallschirmjägers and Panzers, we rout the heroic Red Army troops in the centre. The ground is covered with craters and dead bodies...

A little mopping up in hte north, and a final bombardment, and it is over.

I really killed a lot of russains here. I did very well until maybe turn 12, when I became the victim of my own success and went for the russian rear, where the terrain (dense woods, strategically placed ridges) favoured the defender. Still, this kept a number of T-34s occupied that might otherwise have been sent ot the north of centre. My 88s only came into play very late, although they then sealed the fate for several KVs that had nowhere to run when they were caught in the open. And there always is their fear value. My artillery saved my hide several times, without my 105´s I would for sure have drowned in a tide of bloodthirsty cossacks!

Squirmer -> Well played (3/20/2003 2:02:49 AM)

Congrats! A total drubbing well administered.

I never stood much chance against the relentless efficiency of the Germans. Quality difference was the main problem, I lost count of the number of times GE Recon Patrols would despatch entire platoons of Soviet infantry. That's only a slight exaggeration as well.

In hindsight and since I was on the defensive for 90% of the game I think I should have taken more AT guns. If I could have got rid of the less numerous German tanks I might have stood a chance.

A BT-7 raiding party might have been a good idea on a super-large map but not here ... ;)
