WarHunter -> Naval Air Combat Bug (8/30/2014 5:38:06 AM)

Here is the best example of the Naval Air Combat Bug I can find.

The key problem is this.

If there are bombers and nothing to bomb. The program will not continue search routine.

If only Fighter vs Fighters. All goes well.
If there is a ship to bomb. All is well.
It makes clearing a sea zone impossible as long as there is 1 bomber at sea with nothing to bomb vs fighters. If the fighters clear the bomber.

Follow the steps to see for yourself.

Step 1
Initial combat. 8 Italian fighters vs 5 Allied fighters.

Step 2
Add 1 Italy NAV to the 2 box.

Step 3

Add 1 German fighter and 1 German NAV to 2 box

Step 4
Do not add any allied fighters or bombers.

Step 5
Roll a 1 for Axis search

Step 6
Roll a 1 for Allied search

Step 7
Choose Naval Air Combat

Step 8
Choose fighter role for Allied fighters.

Step 9
Roll an 11 for both sides. The die rolls don't really make much difference. This is just to make sure all aircraft survive.

Step 10
Both sides abort Air Combat.

Step 11
There is no step.
The program instead of asking If you want to stay in the sea zone.
Will instead go directly into Strategic bombing.

That's it. Feel free to create any naval air combat you want to check it out thoroughly.

I think have have a similar problem. Early Global War I had an Italian unit overrunning the French Fleet, which was intercepted one by one in the west med by a NAV. As soon as the ensuing naval combat results in a undamaged french ship which decides to abort when it can choose itself the digression phase ends after the message that there is nothing to bomb, The rest of the French fleet than stays for tea with the Italian inf corps who overran it..

Reported and reproduceable. Steve will start diving into naval bugs within a week, I think.

Courtenay -> RE: Naval Air Combat Bug (8/30/2014 3:50:50 PM)

The early termination of naval combat caused by bombarding air units having no targets, either because their are no ships from them to bomb or because their bombing strength is reduced to zero by AA fire, is the most serious bug in the game at present that I am aware of.

There are workarounds:

If the problem is that one side has no ships, but does have fighters, and the other side has bombers, then: During air to air combat, never clear through any of the bombers. If you roll an AC or DC, change it by hand to NE. (You must have "Show die roll" set, which also allows you to change them.) Then, when the combat is done, abort the side with bombers. Aborting in naval air combat does not remove the air units from the sea zone; they will still be there for the next round of combat. Doing this will allow you to have a next round of combat.

If the problem is that one side's bombers have their bombing completely negated by AA fire, instead, reduce the AA results so that one point of bombing gets through. This will produce nothing but A results; just have the ships make all their damage rolls. (Since there is AA fire, there will be ships in the sea zone with a damage rating less than 10, unless all the AA fire is coming from damaged units with a base damage rating of 9. I might believe that happening if I saw it, but I probably wouldn't believe it even then. [:)] )

If one side has no naval units and no fighters, and the other side has bombers, then you are stuck. There is no workaround that I am aware of.

These workarounds are annoying, but allow you to do naval combat as the rules intended.

I think we need an "Awesome Workaround" category for posts like this one.

WarHunter -> RE: Naval Air Combat Bug (9/1/2014 12:55:30 AM)

Nice workaround. For a solitaire game. Try using it after half a dozen naval air combats. And one comes up with the lottery pick.

My opponent and I have another workaround. We pretend we both rolled a 10 for search.
We agree it is a serious bug.

I want to thank you for finding and reporting all these bugs.[&o][&o] And I am completely sincere. I'll be working on the naval stuff the next couple of weeks and fixing things will go much faster with all your saved games and detailed instructions on how to recreate the problems.
