Panjack -> Extended map question (9/1/2014 3:38:48 AM)

The extended map ( http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/printable.asp?m=2905866 ) adds, among other things, (1) Masirah between Aden and Abadan and (2) Subic Bay in PI. How has the addition of these two hexes changed game play?

Thanks.

Some of us are addicts and live for that added reality, being able to change and add roads and rails, modifying bases size and locations, changing islands, etc. If you are one of those folks (like me), it is part of the secret sauce that makes the game so addicting.

Most map changes are aesthetic in that they can change the outcome of the game only slightly. The reality is The American navy can lose every ship it has in 1942 and still march to Tokyo by game's end. VP's are a tool that allows the empire to have chance to win the game by the end of 42 if the allies go turtle into their shell too much. IMHO, these map changes do not affect the math in the overall equation, even if they certainly have value to those who made them.

Most 'enhancements' are tricks that slow down the allied onslaught in on way or another, usually by giving the empire a little more power.

let me suggest you play stock PBEM (sc 1) if you haven't and get a feel for a standard game.

With the original map, there was a direct off-map route between Abadan and Aden so you could create CS convoys between the two ports to keep enough fuel at Aden to support the shipping there.  With the extended map, the route goes on map so you can't create a CS convoy.  (You can't select Aden as a destination for a convoy at Abadan.)  It makes moving fuel to Aden slightly more complicated.

Thanks for the comments. I'm moving from Scen 1 against AI to a PBEM involving a much more complicated scenario (including the extended map), and I'm trying to figure out if the extended map really makes much difference. Based on your comments, I guess not.

I think some of the extra bases on the Malay peninsular are potentially very important as they provide extra opportunities for Japanese interdiction of rail lines with para drops at the start of the game. Potentially for the Japanese player going big the opportunity to grab Dante and Socotra is a means of sealing off Aden if they were going for a full India gambit. Some of the northern Indian bases in current day Pakistan I don't quite see the point of but someone more clued up than me may well provide an answer.

Yes I've seen in AARs the use of the new hexes in Malaya, but I've not run across anything notable about the Subic Bay or Masirah or Dante bases. I figured the new area in northern India is mostly to make the top of the map kinda even with Masirah.

But at least one posting suggests that, in the extended map, Japan might think twice about taking Socotra or either of the two new Arabian Sea bases: it might lead to emergency reinforcements. I don't know if this is really true or if it was changed:

This. Also the extra bases in the Solomons. Those were the big takeaways to me, but I'm sure I'd notice more as I played.

But that extra base to properly protect the Straits of Malacca via minefield and CD gunfire is much more realistic and historical.

Is there a witptracker regions text file for the extended map?
