Jorge_Stanbury -> Jun 15: A sea of Allied Blood (6/23/2017 2:22:24 AM)

I haven't been updating this AAR, as really nothing too interesting had happened in the last few months..

until now...

I decided to do a major offensive, a mass assault on Port Moresby, Terapo and Buin followed by multiple invasions on the DEI

The 1st part, Port Moresby, Terapo and Buin were just "diversion in force", with the objective to fight and destroy LBAs and then to maintain pressure, so that he won't rebase LBAs into the DEI

The second part of the plan consisted on a deep thrust into the DEI.

Situation is as follows:
- Horrendous Allied losses last turn: 2 CVE sunk, another one following tomorrow, 2 heavy damaged
- DEI force was able to access Timor sea with no damage
- Pt Moresby captured on 1st attempt. Time to build another level 9 airfield
- Terapo was a failure (this is where most of my CVEs sank), probably will need to wait until Pt Moresby is repaired... A stupid mistake: I should had kept all CVEs concentrated in Pt Moresby. By splitting I made it easier for LBAs

BBfanboy -> RE: Jun 15: A sea of Allied Blood (6/23/2017 3:04:03 AM)

Ouch on the CVEs - were any of the aircraft able to divert to other carriers or land bases? If you need to clear decks of refugees you could perhaps send them to Pt. Moresby?

Lots of planes went to Horn and Merauke, Pt Moresby is useless (thanks to my 4E bombers) and it will need some time to get repaired

I had to pay for 3 squadrons that were desttroyed, and I am not too concerned about the planes since I have too many Wildcats now, and even the Hellcats' pool is OK, even with all fleet carriers at max + reserves.. but carrier losses are sad, even CVE losses

I am playing sloppy lately..

BBfanboy -> RE: Jun 15: A sea of Allied Blood (6/23/2017 3:27:45 AM)

Well it's OK to be sloppy once, but try to avoid the sloppy seconds ... [;)]

Jorge_Stanbury -> RE: Jun 15: A sea of Allied Blood (6/23/2017 3:35:03 AM)

Well at least the sustained enemy losses (in airframes) would reduce the pool of DEI reinforcements

[image]local://upfiles/41287/4F31621DDB7243C29EE8C9242E6467CB.jpg[/image]

jwolf -> RE: Jun 15: A sea of Allied Blood (6/23/2017 1:05:11 PM)

Even with most or all of the Japanese carrier force destroyed, they will still have plenty of LBA available throughout the DEI area. Maybe you tried too much at once?

Where did the Japanese ground losses of planes (about 80 fighters) take place?

He has not lost the carrier force, he has lost the carriers.. so now all the KB squadrons that lost their carriers are deadly (and big) LBAs [X(]

Most of the dead was on Kai-Eilanden or something, on the Timor sea,I will post a picture tomorrow
Darwin is basically now a 4E hammer that is pounding each and every airbase in range... nothing he can do about it. I mean I will eventually lose some bombers, but once the bombs start to fall, then it is over for Japan, with 100% airfield damage guaranteed and heavy ground losses guaranteed after one or two days

That said, he surprised me with attacks from a level-2 base (so sneaky), it didn't work because of long range, but I could had lost a few ships.. Of course next turn this base will be closed

The idea is to leave a path of destruction so that the carriers and TFs can pass with minimal damage.

Jorge_Stanbury -> Jun 16: I lost the CVEs :( (6/24/2017 6:27:48 PM)

So this campaign would probably be the definition of pyrrhic victory; or maybe something that the Soviets would feel proud about.

Long story short, I gained Pt Moresby and soon Terapo. I have also degraded LBA's capabilities, so that there will be less opposition to the DEI landings

but in order to do so, I spent have spent, so far:

- 5 CVEs sunk (Barnes, Suwanee, Sangamon, Copahee, Chenango
- 3 APAs, 5 xAPs sunk

Damaged ships:
- BB Pennsylvania got 3 submarine launched torpedoes, it is pretty much dead in water
- CVE Nassau and Prince William at high risk, Altamaha and Long Island at some risk

Yes this clearly demonstrates that the end of the KB is not the end of the game.

IdahoNYer -> RE: Jun 16: I lost the CVEs :( (6/25/2017 4:33:00 AM)

Good to see this AAR back Jorge!!!

Looks like a tough "win" alright. Can't afford a few more like it[:-]

jwolf -> RE: Jun 16: I lost the CVEs :( (6/26/2017 1:24:38 PM)

I think your description of a Soviet type of "victory" is right: if you capture the objective, it's a victory, never mind what the costs were. But ouch!! [X(] Kudos to your opponent for keeping up a tough fight even after some crushing losses.

Jorge_Stanbury -> RE: Jun 17: I lost Hermes (7/4/2017 12:53:11 AM)

Total British losses on Medan operations were:

CVL Hermes: really sad day, Hermes might not be the most modern carrier, but it had so much history in this game. Not to mention that its captain was Arthur William La Touche Bisset, the hero of Ceylon
CAs Frobisher, Shropshire
DDs Tjerk Hiddes, Van Galen
DE Stewart

In exchange of 3 little TKs, and a mediocre bombardment that disabled, at most, a few oil wells

EDIT: This is the enemy TF that reacted to Medan.. it is important to have it recorded, because it probably shows the entire naval assets at Singapore (2 BBs, 3 CAs, 5 CLs, 9 DDs)

Jorge_Stanbury -> Jun 22: The empire reacts, Yamato strikes! (7/6/2017 8:52:08 PM)

I don't have the turn yet, just the combat replay. Several, significant and coordinated forces were sent to intercept the carriers and amphibious fleets between Dili and Wetar.
Several battles were fought at the Banda Sea, and losses were heavy (both sides)

I can't get a full tally yet, but probably it is safe to say:

Allies --> 5 heavy cruisers sunk
One invasion fleet attacked by LBA, 3 ships severely damaged

Japan --> 3 battleships Yamato, Hyuga, Mutsu), 2 heavy cruisers, 2 light cruisers, several destroyers sunk

BBfanboy -> RE: Jun 22: The empire reacts, Yamato strikes! (7/6/2017 9:35:29 PM)

Looks like you came out ahead on that exchange, although I am not convinced Mutsu sank from one torpedo hit and some cruiser caliber gun hits. I only noted one CL, Tama that sank and not that much damage to any other (unless there is more combat report to post). I think the DD losses will really be painful for him - most of those were the big fleet DDs with five or six X 5" guns and those nasty long lances.

Jorge_Stanbury -> RE: Jun 22: The empire reacts, Yamato strikes! (7/6/2017 10:10:45 PM)

True, I double counted Tama

And I still need to build a tally. Hyuga sank Atago too. Yamato got 5 torpedoes. Takao was at heavy fires heavy damage last time I saw it. Then his escorts got bombed and I didn't see it then
Mutsu was with Yamato and I didn't see it in the PM strike. It also got several 1000lb bombs... Who knows?? 😊

In any case Mutsu either sank or ended with heavy damage. Considering how far it's from home at least it's out of the picture for the rest of 1943

IdahoNYer -> RE: Jun 22: The empire reacts, Yamato strikes! (7/6/2017 10:36:48 PM)

Looks like a good day's work for the Allied Cause!!

42 Jills drop torps with ZERO hits??!! Amazing!

Light maneuverable cruisers

Jorge_Stanbury -> RE: Jun 22: The empire reacts, Yamato strikes! (7/7/2017 1:22:39 PM)

After additional, careful revision of the combat replay, this is my final tally for enemy losses. Allied to be counted once I get the turn

So, in all, I can say I put 15 out of 25 enemy ships out of action either permanently or for a long time.

Interesting that Yamato didn't show any damage text (heavy damage, etc) after getting 5 torpedoes... can it survive so much punishment?
I will probably get the answer by counting float plane losses, this of course once I receive the turn.
In any case, my opponent said that after so heavy losses, he would need time to prepare the turn, which of course hints of bigger losses than what actually sank

EDIT: I actually missed one combat report: Mutsu got 2 torpedo hits in total

[image]local://upfiles/41287/859F24C05DB943B18017F79655CDCA01.jpg[/image]

Allied losses, at first look seems to be:
5 Heavy cruisers, 1 DD, 1 AK, 1 LSI(L).. these last two probably from a Celebes invasion fleet

jwolf -> RE: Jun 22: The empire reacts, Yamato strikes! (7/7/2017 1:45:17 PM)

The combat report showing all the torpedo hits on the Yamato doesn't say anything about fires or heavy damage ... very surprising. But in any case you have definitely blunted the spear of the IJN for a long time. That was a nice bloodbath for the fans. [8D]

Jorge_Stanbury -> RE: Jun 22: The empire reacts, Yamato strikes! (7/7/2017 2:12:21 PM)

Yes, any slugfest is good news for the Allies now, Japan needs hit and run tactics and going against the main fleet was a gamble that was going to end badly regardless of how much damage it was going to inflict.

Next turn will likely be used to rearrange the fleet, capture Dili and then go north for the next stop

Bif1961 -> RE: Jun 22: The empire reacts, Yamato strikes! (7/7/2017 10:04:41 PM)

It appears he didn't use enough surface vessels and ran out of ammo and you owned them. Your carriers were in harm's way twice and got off lucky.
