XLVIIIPzKorp -> Oppurtunity Fire Issue... Berto? Jason? (9/14/2014 5:02:20 PM)

Would've reported this sooner but I have not been playing for a while. Started a new scenario, as is my habit I go through my units and adjust their op-fire settings. Doing this I find we can no longer set op-fire individually for artillery, mortars, indirect fire types. I always set my artillery to never op fire as artillery is too vulnerable to potential return fire. Trying to do so now by using the Ctrl-P combo while the unit is selected simply changes the cursor to a crosshair. If I were to use the universal settings, artillery would fall into the other types category and turning off op-fire for the artillery will also turn off op-fire for all my infantry types. [X(]

Is there any chance of going back to simply using the "D" key to set op-fire? or if not the "D" key then perhaps some other single key rather than a Ctrl - x combination? And in the meantime I guess restrictive op-fire can't be set for indirect types unless you want the same settings for all "Other Firing Units" [:(]

In general, simple key presses are now for displaying something or other. Ctrl- & Alt- key combos are for game changing actions. This is by design. The thought being that if a player presses a single key perhaps by accident, it won't make a permanent change to anything, rather will just change the display (easily undone).

About the D key reassignment: D now displays Disrupted units (a natural mnemonic). Before, there was no hot key for that purpose. No changing back, sorry.

So how can I set op-fire to never for artillery without doing the same for "other types" and by default all my infantry?? Perhaps the combo should be changed to Alt + P, so a crosshair doesn't appear and would allow op-fire to be set for artillery?

To set individual units' op fire, select the unit(s) first. Then do the Ctrl-P to summon the Opportunity Fire Dialog. You will see that for other firing unit types, the controls are dimmed. Anything you set should only apply to the selected unit(s), not generally, by category.

Unfortunately, at this time, there is no way to set categorical op fire for artillery vs. all "other types". It's all "other types", including both artillery and infantry, or nothing. To set artillery op fire only, you would have to do it piece by piece. Sorry.

In the Opportunity Fire Dialog, separating out artillery from all "other types" -- maybe something to include in future patches. Making use of Alt-P (arty opfire) is a good suggestion.

Regarding Opportunity fire, are AFV AT units in the AT/Art category or in the armor category?

berto -> RE: Oppurtunity Fire Issue... Berto? Jason? (9/17/2014 8:24:11 PM)

That would be set on a per-unit basis, in the .oob (.obx) files. There is no code-enforced generalization; it's entirely data based.

Maybe in a future update, we can make all of this less obscure, more granular, and easier to micro-manage. But for now, we are stuck with what the game's legacy code makes possible, and dictates.

Exactly Berto, that's what I am saying. I set individual op- fire, and if you individually select an artillery unit, then do the Ctrl + P combination you do not get the op-fire menu, your on map cursor changes to the crosshair as if you are going to fire the artillery unit.

Try it, you'll see [:(]

Thanks

I do see it sometimes. The odd thing is that one observes the behavior you describe with one arty unit, then with a different arty unit one doesn't see it.

With arty unit(s) selected, try either to

  • Do the Ctrl-P combo faster, simultaneously (don't press just the Ctrl key, then press P at your leisure a short while later).
  • Use the Units > Assign Opportunity Fire ... menu option. This should work in all cases.

Apologies for this occasional UI glitch.

  • So I tried the Ctrl-P combo fast, simultaneously, etc. but I didn't have any luck

    however...

The Units menu approach did work. So at least I do have a way to set artillery individually.

Thank you for that! Truth be told I'm so used to keys and shortcuts I never even thought about actual menus.

If this intermittent operation of Ctrl-P becomes too bothersome -- and it may only involve artillery units, at least that's what I have seen -- and if Alt-P doesn't work for some reason, or if we want to reserve that for some other use, we might commit one of the higher, unused F keys (e.g., F11) for the purpose of summoning the Opportunity Fire Dialog as still another alternative. Not mnemonic, but at least it avoids your having to use the top menu alternative. Maybe dedicate a Tool Bar button too, but maybe not, as the Tool Bar is already quite crowded (and becoming even more so, for other reasons).

Not now, for some future update of course.

Indeed, an F key would be nice. I used to constantly tinker with my unit op-fires by hitting the "D" key. A difficult habit for me to unlearn.

As you say perhaps in the future.

    Thanks for the assist. [:D]

    This is so funny...

You know "the" solution to this problem?

  • Toggle the move/fire mode button -- the very first, left-most button in the Tool Bar -- to fire mode (showing the red crosshairs).
  • Ctrl-P now works in all cases!
  • When you are finished tinkering with opfire assignments, toggle the move/fire mode button back to move mode (showing the green arrow).

    [:D]

  • Holy crap!! It does!! Nice..... Thanks again Berto! [:D]
