baboeska -> Nuclear Free NZ vs the FVEY's Jimmy Carter - cable-tap.scen (9/15/2014 1:25:41 PM)

My first scenario! :D And first post! :D

Cable-tap

April 2015

In this scenario, following the September 2014 election with a surprise win, New Zealand is no longer a part of the FVEY's/Echelen/UKUSAAUNZ global spying alliance, and has kicked out the global Echelon spy system.
As a result of this, the US Navy have sent the SSN Seawolf "Jimmy Carter" outfitted for the job of tapping fibre optic communications to Auckland harbour in the Hauraki Gulf to tap the undersea cable from New Zealand to America, in order to regain any lost advantage as a result of this change.
On it's way in, it surfaced to receive a radio transmission and in the process sunk a fishing vessel and sustained some reactor damage, hence it's slightly damaged.
To tap the cable, the Jimmy Carter must hold in a small designated shallow water area for approximately 30 minutes, before exfiltrating.
The NZ Defence Force, on the other hand, must sink the Jimmy Carter, as not only is that a violation of NZ's sovereign territory, but NZ is also a nuclear free country so no nuclear subs allowed!

Enforce the law!
Or invade the privacy of millions of innocent people!

There's something I need to learn with the AI in that I don't know how to get the sub to change missions upon completion of the first one.
There might also be a bug with the sub ai and the coast line, should head south, not sure if it's a one off or every time. Updated the zip so it might be okay.
I also made overlays of a few NZ military bases, but the overlays were waaaaaaay too big to fit in a forum post :).

Hope you enjoy, any feedback is appreciated :)

Also, I know that this mission is totally hypothetical, like America would bother, they'd just tap the cable at their end :D
And also, sinking a nuclear sub close to your shoreline is probably a pretty bad thing to do if you care about not being radioactive.

Also, I know that the RNZAF P-3 is capable of dropping 500lb bombs, laser designated ordinance and Maverick's, but neither appear in the loadout options... And the Jimmy Carter can apparently launch a small reconaissence UAV, which would be cool to see included in the loadout options...

Updated file to Final, please tell me about any glitches, bugs, ai issues, general feedback :)
Happy to make post final revisions if anyone desires :D

Addendum: February 2015
Have updated scenario name and certain other things, should work very well now :D
Thanks for all the feedback

I liked this scenario concept and its background story. I've been thinking about creating this type of scenario involving these spy submarines as the Halibut, the Parche and the Jimmy Carter.

The area where we have to park the submarine is very shallow. The Jimmy is a very big guy, inevitably we are bound to emerge and be exposed to the infamous P-3 Orion which is orbiting the area of operation.

I will try more times.

It might be impossible to win currently as Americans.
You could play as NZDF and feel good about yourself ;).
If you google Takapuna beach wikileaks southern cross cable, that's where the eastern end of the cable comes out, I need to find out what sort of depth the Jimmy Carter's predecessors have worked in.
Realistically, in 1971 the USS Hallibut hacked a Soviet cable that was in 120m of water (Operation Ivy Bells), so I might have a look through the gulf and extrapolate with modern technology (which according to wikipedia's page on trimix, allows up to 1000ft deep for scuba divers - the USS Parche divers probably used trimix, it stands to reason), and imagine what sort of cable tapping unmanned submersible vehicles they have invented, in terms of reducing difficulty.
The SSN 23 Jimmy Carter is kind of the descendant of the USS Hallibut, and can probably unload divers deeper and is stealthier, so might reupload a scenario with a different deeper hit box for the cable laying.

Updated scenario file, should be easier for America now :)
I have changed the file name to "Cable-tap beta1"
The cable tap is still happening in less than 120m of water due to game/balancing reasons, should be an improvement :D.

Updated to final and fixed a few AI issues, game should now work with both sides for AI.

I just started playing the Cable Tap 2015 (Nuclear incursion) community scenario. All of a sudden I get a message stating "Side NZ now considered hostile", that is the players side. A few seconds later my frigate opens up on a nearby motor yacht:

quote:

2015-04-15 10:38:52 - : Side 'NZ' is now considered HOSTILE

2015-04-15 10:38:52 - Civillian: Contact: F 77 Te Kaha [Anzac] was observed attacking a friendly unit and is now considered as hostile!

2015-04-15 10:38:54 - : Weapon: 20mm/100 Mk15 Phalanx Blk 1B Burst [300 rnds] missed Civilian Motor Yacht [38m] by 23ft

After close inspection the NZ side has Engage non-hostiles turned on in the ROE. Maybe the scenario constructor should revise this.

Thanks.

Just a quick comment. Surfacing and sinking a fishing vessel is extremely (and I mean EXTREMELY) unlikely to lead to reactor damage. Sensors (sail coming up under fishing vessel, or bow first damaging the sonar array - thin structure there in the cone), dive planes, rudder, propulsor. Those things are more vulnerable being external to the pressure hull. The reactor is designed to keep operating or be able to quickly restart after very severe shock events. Surfacing under a fishing vessel doesn't come close.

Thanks for the feedback :)
I've been meaning to fix a few things in it but have been super busy, will definitely get to it though.

My old Ivy Bells scenario, if someone will be inspired on it: http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?/files/file/797-operation-ivy-bells-1971/

Have just updated scenario, thanks for the feedback people :)
Everything should be working totally good now, thanks :D

baboeska -> RE: Nuclear Free NZ vs the FVEY's Jimmy Carter - cable-tap.scen (2/25/2015 12:11:11 PM)

Ok I am getting a glitch whereby for some reason, the New Zealand navy is firing on a fishing boat.
I've looked through the ROE and Posturing, and everything looks totally fine, I don't understand why...
You'll just have to sink a fishing boat :(

It seems that even with engage non hostile targets set to NO, when the frigate gets into close proximity to non hostile vessels, it opens fire...
Is this a bug or the way it's meant to be?
