Tinian first. How much to prepare is a judgement call. At least 3 divisions, 2 tank battalions, 4 artillery regiments. Must also have shore party capable units to get things ashore in better shape. In separate TF land an OBSCENE amount of supply and keep landing it. Conduct naval bombardment in small packets so that a stream of TFs can be going/coming to/from rearming while bombardment continues every or almost every turn.

Let your ground combat units recover their disruption before making/between attacks.

After you have the first base, immediately bring in support types, especially a bunch of AKE but others too. Get most of the combat units off and get some base units in but lots of engineers for quick repair and build out. After build out (or sooner) get in air HQ, AA, CD if not enough sea control.

Also then naval bombardment on the other bases to knock out air ops. AKE ships will eventually empty due to small port (limited restocking) requiring either pauses or rotation in of full AKE.

Top level HQ and many army HQ have range to support next invasions from the first island, reducing the stacking stress.

Yes I though about Tinian too. However I am worry little about level 8 AF on Guam.

I did not mansion before I have 2 Amphib HQ and 3 AGC it should help.

Now I am thinking about taking Truk before landing Marianas. It is defended by 57th Div and one tank company.
Having such fleet base so close to Marianas should help a lot with 1st phase. However it will signal to Martin that I am going for bigger push in central pacific in '43.

One more question: Does anyone know for what purpose I have several Boat&Shore Engineer Battalions.

witpqs -> RE: Road to Tokyo. MrKane(A) vs Spidery(J) (1/12/2015 9:37:55 PM)

Those are some of the 'shore party' type units that I mentioned. The others are at least two different types of USMC units. I'll try to remember to post back when I have a look to see their names.

witpqs -> RE: Road to Tokyo. MrKane(A) vs Spidery(J) (1/12/2015 9:42:17 PM)

As far as Guam goes, it is much more heavily defended. Naval bombardments will shut down the airfield, but of course nothing will be easy including that. With stacking limits it's not like you can land all the troops you have at one spot to overwhelm it in a couple of days. That's what leads me to suggest Getting Tinian first, so you have a base for rearm of naval bombardment TFs, an airbase to supplement your carriers, and so on.

My response is just one idea, and it certainly has its drawbacks in addition to its good points.

Thanks for help. Any advice how to use them ? Just load on Amphip TF like others units or there is some trick way to operate them like in case of AGC and Amphip HQ ?

Prepare them for the target. Unload them in the first wave. They help ships unload, so use them accordingly. For example, aside from auto-shock attacks, I almost never give them orders to attack because I save them for unloading supplies (they aren't exactly offensive Terminators anyway!). I try to include at least one in each invasion, although more for large invasions can help.

If you look at the troops they contain you will find it is naval support and logistics. they do not contain any engineers so they do not help with port repair and/or construction.

You will also get amphibious units of the same type as wipqs mentioned.

Great for amphibious operations.

CaptBeefheart -> RE: Road to Tokyo. MrKane(A) vs Spidery(J) (1/13/2015 12:54:30 AM)

As Wargamr mentioned, those Boat & Shore Engineer Battalions are great for invasions. You should put some in your first assault wave as they will help unload all of your amphibious ships at a faster rate.

Cheers,
CC

Bif1961 -> RE: Road to Tokyo. MrKane(A) vs Spidery(J) (1/13/2015 6:05:48 PM)

I would go for Guam as it has the biggest port and airfiled and isn't better defended then the other Islands. The added benefit going for Guam first is that you will remove two headquarters from giving and bonuses for the follow up invasions. Once you secure Guam I would go for Tinian as it seems to have less supporting artillery and AAA. Then Rota and Pagan. You don't need to take Saipan if you take the other Islands. You can isolated and practice bomb the Saipan garrison at your leisure and still build th AFs up on the other islands to support your B-29 strikes once the XXI Bomber Command becomes available. You didn't mention how many CVEs you had. I use those to defend the invasion fleet as the Fleet heavy and light carriers go raiding shutting down any airfleds that can counter-strike my landings. As this is the inner-ring of the Japanese Empire, because it bring the B-29s into range of the Home Islands, be ready for a major naval engagement. Good luck with your decision.

MrKane -> RE: Road to Tokyo. MrKane(A) vs Spidery(J) (1/13/2015 7:37:34 PM)

Thanks you guys.

True is I am starting think about finishing this game little earlier. It seams to me I can land even on Japan islands at the beginning of 1944 and finish this game. My opponent is good defender with nice tactical skills, however his lack of aggression in Air and naval loses make may game much easier than I suspected it would be. On other hand I would like to see p-51D in action. Summarizing I am little missing thrill I was feeling when I was planning my next turn in my game vs GJ. :)

BBfanboy -> RE: Road to Tokyo. MrKane(A) vs Spidery(J) (1/13/2015 9:13:12 PM)

Although you are not attacking Atolls or small islands, both witpqs and Spruance have found that using lots of tanks gives good punch for a small number of troops. This helps with the stacking limit issue. You can also exceed the SL by a little without much penalty. The players with more experience than me can tell you how much "a little" is. [;)]

I find that smashing into things with my land armies is more fun than bombing an enemy into submission. But that might be just me :]

You're doing a great job with this. I give him a year more at most.

MrKane -> RE: Road to Tokyo. MrKane(A) vs Spidery(J) (1/16/2015 11:18:54 PM)

12th Nov 1943.

Southwest Pacific HQ
:

Martin sent his P1Y1 to attack warships near Batavia without result. He lost 1 plane to night fighters (P-70) and 2 to ship's flak.

I was planing to destroy/damage his fighters on Palembang airfield using 200 B-24 at night and next finish his defenses by massive sweeps at morning.

Well it did not work as planned. All B-24 lost they way and there was no night attack at all :(
My fighters went for massive sweep and they meet massive CAP (110 N1K1-J) at morning. Battle ended with 23 Allied fighters and 60 Japanese destroyed. Next six USMC squadrons ( 3 x F6F-3, 3 x SDB-3, 1 x TBF) attacked his ships in Palembang hex. As result Martin lost AK, AKL, E, TK and over 1000 man drown.

Not bad day, but it could be better. There is sill 90 N1K1-J reported in his base. I hope my B-24 will fly during next night.

Southwest Pacific HQ:

Over 100 B-24 raided Palembang at night 13th. They caused mirror damage to airfield and destroyed 13 airplanes on ground.

15th Nov 1943.

Southwest Pacific HQ:

5th USAAF has raided Palembang again. This time in day light. Over 200 bombers bombed airfield with escort over 100 fighters. As prelude to bombing base was swept by 150 fighters.
Result are promising: airbase damage: 87, 123 (70 Frank, 37 Oscar, 24 Gorge, 23 Irving) Japanese fighters destroyed including 46 on ground for 19 fighters and 3 bombers. Air recon still shows 50 enemy fighters in base, however I think most of them are damaged SR 3 planes.
One more day and base will be ready for day oil bombing.

Southwest Pacific HQ:

5th USAAF has raided Palembang during day. Over 300 fighters and 200 bombers scored over 200 hits without resistance from enemy. Airfield is closed, 100% damage, additionally it seems that Martin fighters deserted south part of Sumatra.

This five days offensive is first major daylight victory for 5th USAAF. I hope it will be next soon.
