Styx3 -> [FIXED B579] SA-5 gammon can't engage a boeing 747 (10/6/2014 1:14:36 PM)

I'm trying a scenario were a civilian aircraft enters soviet space and is downed by sams but a battallion of sa-5 can't engage it because it tells "weapon is unable to engage an imprecise target". Aircraft is flying at 30000 ft at cruise speed.

Engage non-hostile targets set to "yes"?

ckfinite -> RE: Sa-5 gammon can't engage a boeing 747 (10/6/2014 1:27:50 PM)

The surveillance radar coverage of the target area isn't good enough. Wait a bit or add a new EW radar site.

Can you explain me better? You think that it will be better to add another bn of sa-5 or add some time of early warning radar?

I tried this:
See, if the exact location of the target isn't known, the missile can't engage. Now, there seems to be a problem with the SA-5, since I could indeed fly both a 747 and An-225 right over it with it never engaging. Putting a more modern early warning radar nearby solved the problem, since it made the target clearer.

I tried to do as you suggest and it fuctions but i think there is a problem with the fcr radar of the sa-5 bn unit

Can you post your scenario to take a look at?

Does seem a bit strange that it's having so much trouble.

Meanwhile before the dev team takes a look maybe consider adding a Bar Lock radar or something, it seems to help out.

Yeah in some cases you've got add the radars to the scenarios. This is especially true if many types may have been used.

I think at one point we may have included them but players pointed out that may not be necessarily true with some systems.

Anyways do that. If there is still an issue let us know.

Thanks for submitting this.

The root cause is a tweak we made a few builds back to the radar model. Low-frequency radars (in this case the Tall King) cannot generate precise target tracks. (This BTW is part of the reason why Stealth research initially focused on high frequency, as that is the territory of most fire-control radars).

The fix here is to do an additional pre-fire check with available sensors able to generate a precise fix (in this case the Square Pair radar). If the target can be detected precisely, and all other firing conditions are met, the weapon is launched.

Fixed in Build 579.

nice!

Build 579 hasn't been released yet? Am I wrong?

No you are correct. It is not out yet.

@Sunburn so I understand correctly. If I have a Nebo M radar (VHF, so too imprecise) and it detects a hostile aircraft within missile range of my SA-21 (which has its radars turned off and is on automatic EMCON) it will automatically turn on its FCR and target the hostile aircraft. After it is either hit or has retreated the FCR radar is automatically turned off again?
