Most AWESOME game!!

However, in game database of weapons can be annoying if you are not a walking weapons encyclopedia. I actual don't mind searching online but some terms are not easy to zero in on. For example what is HiCap ammo for the 127mm gun?

Ammo types seem to be modeled extremely accurately, for example, zooming in on the STOCKDALE engaging the Nanutchka in the ASuW tutorial shows slowly expanding white dots and rapidly expanding rings bracketing the Nanutchka. This is obviously showing the near misses of each type of ammo. But what is the kill and damage zone for the HECVT? How does the game determine which ammo to use? Why was the STOCKDALE intermittently switching between HECVT, HiCap and WP?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Ok by comparing stats with other rounds, I can assume that HiCap is a type of armor piercing round. From my experience with this game, it would be helpful to have a short "general description" above "general data" in the database description window. For example, "HECVT (High Explosive, Variable Time Delayed Fuse) general purpose round using a variable timed delayed detonation, with fragmentation being the primary means to disable or destroy targets"

Hah - not too shabby for a bubblehead...
[:D]

Yeah - the database has the ability to add a descriptive paragraph to display with the record... Since it's just a separate flat txt file - it can be done by anyone - then just placed in the appropriate directory... The problem is someone has to write the descriptive paragraph... I've been working on a bunch - but - I'm still working on major platforms...

Welcome aboard... Submarine once - submarines twice...

Scott

HiCAP is actually High Capacity, a high explosive (HE) round with thin walls that contains a greater percentage of explosive for shell weight than regular HEAP (HE-Armour-Piercing, usually rendered as just AP for naval ordnance) or conventional HE. HE HiCAP is generally nose fuzed and does its damage through primarily blast and incendiary effects although the thinner walled projectile bodies produce greater and more effective fragmentation than HEAP or conventional HE, both of which have a lower filler to shell weight ratio.

In the real world HiCAP may give poor performance when fuzed for delayed functioning against a hard target due to the structurally weaker shell body (because of the relatively thinner shell walls) or impact damage to the nose-mounted fuze destroying the delay element before it can function but I do not think that CMANO models this.

HECVT is HE Controlled Variable Time. VT ammunition is an airburst with the fuzing by a self contained active radio transceiver. This provides reliable fuze functioning with a predetermined height of burst, generally 7 to 20 metres. The controlled part is because the fuze can be set so for maximum unarmed flight, which avoids premature functioning. Airbursts do damage primarily through fragmentation with secondary incendiary effects due to the hot fragments striking the target at high velocities. Most VT/CVT fuzes are plastic or composite nosed (to be transparent to radio waves) and so tend to be generally ineffective at penetrating anything substantial and functioning in a delay mode but a few models have a short-delay setting.

WP is White Phosphorus, usually a bursting incendiary that may be fuzed delay, impact, or airburst, the latter being particularly nasty but also a violation of international law against unprotected people.

Everything that I have seen so far indicates that CMANO models impact and air bursts differently and for the most part the modelling reflects the real world in my opinion.

It being a tremendous amount of work to create descriptions for every weapon, this has been left to the Community and both databases allow these to be generated and shared. The time that might have been spent by the developers creating the thousands of text files required seems to have been used to create what you see in the game today. A far better use of their time as I see it.

CMANO users really benefit from heeding Captain (USN Retired) Wayne P. Hughes' axiom; To Know Tactics, Know Technology.

scottb613... submarine once, submarine twice, holy jumping ... well, you know the rest. Thanks for the welcome aboard. Did three boats and was COB on my last. Then ended up CMC on a target - Arliegh Burke DDG [X(] I remember HECVT from ESWS quals but I had never heard of HiCap. I plan on adding descriptions myself as I go along but dude, that is daunting prospect.

randomizer... much appreciated info on the 127mm ammo [&o] I also completely understand the devs choice in streamlining the description database. Seems the community is more interested in imbedding images than text right now so I guess I will have to wait a while, create my own notebook or add description myself. In the meantime, folks like yourself that reach to help others make this gaming experience so much better!

Hi MC...

Yeah - did 6 on the Flasher - got out as an ET1/SS - then Desert Storm started - so I volunteered again (N-A-V-Y) for "active" reserves - I should have known better... Assigned a Knox class out in San Diego - we didn't deploy but I did three years on that as a reservist... Skimmers are pretty awful for bubbleheads... My real job while in the Reserves was running the Electronic Warfare Range as a defense contractor on San Clemente Island (SCORE)... I've since moved away from the military stuff... I just saw a buddy a few weeks ago - he did 20+ - retired as a SC - he pulled a few stints as COB - now he does ship alts for boats in Rotten Groton as a double dipper... This stuff gets in your blood it tends to stay there...

Regards,
Scott
