zoommooz11 -> Game will not start (10/14/2014 11:13:22 AM)

Had the game for about two weeks, and have been playing with no problems. I had exited the game using alt tab, and was doing some other stuff, and closed the game along the bottom of the task bar with right mouse click close. A bunch of handling type errors came up, and I was advised that distant worlds would shut down.

Now, I cannot get the game to start anymore. I have checked through the various posts and have tried:

Verifying game cache (I have steam)

RE-installing DX, vcredist, and XNA

Nothing seems to work.

What actually happens, is a load the game and the title box comes up. However, whe I click on either 'play distant worlds', 'game manual' or 'modding guide' it just clicks, and nothing happens.

Any ideas?

Yes, just tried that.... nothing.

I also went into the set up exe and changed the intro movie to 0

Now, when I try to load the game, I get a black screen for about a second, and then back to desk top. Also, I updated my video driver. Still no go.

Are Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player usable?

Both are working fine.

Edit: I had a look at the error log and found this:

2:13:57 AM Finalizer: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
at DistantWorlds.Types.SteamAPI.Shutdown()2:28:13 AM Finalizer: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
at DistantWorlds.Types.SteamAPI.Shutdown()8:16:37 PM Finalizer: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
at DistantWorlds.Types.SteamAPI.Shutdown()

Now I I have tried to launch the game again this morning (the above was when I closed the game originally) and no new error is forth coming. There is also an in game race profile (borg in this case) that I was looking at when I closed the game.

Uninstall the game and reinstall it in a different folder than C:\Program Files (x86)\...

Sure, I will try that, but it does cost me about $10 to do this (vampiric internet rates).

Edit: As I have the steam version, from what I read I will need to reinstall steam to a different location, but with 16 odd games already in the folder, this would mean downloading all the games again, something that I am not willing to do.

This game was working yesterday.

Or search for something like that.

Gave this a try, no help.

I remember I had a similar problem to this sometime ago, and it turned out to be soothing wrong with sound compatibility. With that game I was able to isolate the problem by setting

a no sound option in the ini. file. Does this game recognize any command like that? I say this because the problem exhibited (mind you, that game never worked, unlike this one) are exactly them same ie no error, loads for a second or so, straight back to desktop.

Did you reinstalled steam?

You can save games by right click on them and select backup game files.

I did the one where I deleted all the files except the steam apps (games folder). I then tried to load steam, which proceeded to r-download all of its files (about 90 mb)

If it is a steam problem, wouldn't I have problems with some/all of my other games from steam a well?

zoommooz11 -> RE: Game will not start (10/15/2014 6:25:14 AM)

Another puzzling thing is the 'modding tab', and the 'game manual' tab not working (they did). This suggest that the problem is not with the game itself but something else. Both of these point to the distant worlds folder.

Lastly, when I did reinstall the game, I noticed that the star trek mod was still there. Does this mean I should have uninstalled the game, then deleted all folder manually, before reinstallation?

zoommooz11 -> RE: Game will not start (10/15/2014 6:41:13 AM)

Game is now working. I went through and re-read all post relating to not starting. I then went into my customization folder and deleted all mods. Game now loads?? Does this mean that I cannot use mods, or did I do something else wrong (as previously I was playing with the mods just fine) Regardless that's everyone for the terrific support.

Edit: Completely my fault it turns out. I had one additional comma, where I should not have. Perhaps the game should default back to base theme when something like this happens, or at least some notification. All well that end well.
