24 Dec 41 Japanese attack again in the mountain hex in northern China (see Label 3 in the previous post). They barely get a 2 to 1, as I just reinforced with a weak corp. The Chinese are decimated, with over 4700 casualties, with almost all being destroyed. Japanese losses are 238, all disabled. I fall back along the road to Sian, but my units exist in name only. I have almost nothing between him and Sian now. This was just too easy for him. I defended with what I had, and it wasn't enough. I even threw in a couple of Chinese bomber units to try and disrupt him a little. This loss probably makes Tsiaotso, just southeast of this battle, undefensible for me. The remaining army hq, just north of Sinyang, is defeated. At least it stayed for a turn and forced another attack. (See Label 1 in the previous post). Madang, on the New Guinea north coast, is invaded. Buin is lost. A US AG, unloading its supply at Midway, is spotted by aircraft. Hoping it is just a glen. I have a combat engineer unit on the way, arriving in a few days. Other than the disasterous loss in China, a fairly quiet turn.

I know that conventional wisdom is that supply is the key to China, and using aircraft uses up supply, but in an attempt to slow the breakthrough in the north, I'm sending 2 groups of B17's to China. The Japanese will be exposed east of Sian, and he'll be a good distance from his airfields. It may not save the day, and it may hurt the supply situation, but I'm going to give it a try.

25 Dec 41 Merry Christmas 1941. At least the reinforcement list looks good for the future. A very quiet day, compared to most days so far. Oddly, another sub on sub engagement east of Singapore, and another miss by a Japanese sub. Japanese bombers, with escorts, attack ground units at Kuala Lumpur. This is the next town on his advance south, but he is advancing with only 2 units, led by armor. I moved an Indian brigade into Kuala Lumpur when I saw his weak advance, hoping to make him commit more on the long walk south. He is either keeping a large number of forces up north, waiting to rail them south, or he's sent them north to Bangkok, or both. In the mountain hex in the far northeast of China, near Kweisui, his attack goes at a 1 to 1, with 390 Jap casualties and 283 Allied casualities. He has 2 infantry regiments, an engineer regiment, and an artillery regiment. The Chinese have a corp and an army HQ. The mountain is saving the Chinese for the moment, until he brings up reinforcements. An advance here would threaten a wide hook way up north on the bad trail. There's no way that units should remain supplied on this trail, but I don't know if that is really how it works. Madang falls, on the coast of New Guinea.

26 Dec 41 At least part of KB, and at least one AO is spotted southeast of Rabaul. Seaworlf takes a shot at the AO task force, but misses. No notifications of mines being hit near Rabaul and Shortlands. He's hanging out between the two at the moment. Mergui falls. A fragment of the Brit base force, originally from Tavoy, is destroyed, but the bulk of it was airlifted to Rangoon. In the far northeast of China, an attack yesterday in the mountain hex by Paotow, failed, and it looked like the Chinese could hold here for awhile. That was wrong. The Japanese attacked again, and easily got a 4 to 1 and won the mountain hex. The very long trail and road to the far north of China is essentially open now. I will deploy a unit or two somewhere out on the trail to roadblock him, and spot for bombers that will hopefully hurt him in the open terrain.

27 Dec 41 Two notable Japanese attacks this turn. At San Fernando, in the Phillipines, the Japanese do a probing bombardment. One Phillipine division is matched against the 1st Formosa infantry regiment, and 4 artillery units. He'll need more to advance. His northern Phillipine push has been very weak, making me wonder where all those units really are. More importantly, my opponent's charmed life in China continues. He attacks fleeing Chinese one hex southwest of Nanyang, again barely getting a 2 to 1 (401 to 197), and crushing the Chinese units. He takes 80 disabled losses of all types, I take over 700 destroyed squads of all types. I see no point in stoping in Nanyang now, everything will keep moving into the woods. Interestingly, a sub is spotted near Wellington, New Zealand. No sign of him hitting any of my recently dropped mines.

28 & 29 Dec 41 BB's Ise and Nagato bombard Wenchow in China again. I'll drop some mines nearby as soon as I can, since this is becoming routine. Singkawang is invaded. The Japanese are conservative and thorough again, bringing a surface fleet for cover and a nearby carrier task force including Kaga. My recently dropped minefield near the entrance to Kobe/Osaka is found by a minesweeper. The Flying Tigers make their first appearance. I had them LR capping Nanyang, but they flew a few hexes away and intercepted some Nates, Sonias and Anns. Only 7 AVG show up, but they down 3 enemy with no losses. I will move them out of Sian now that they are spotted. 3 B-17's bomb a ground unit near Nanyang. Minor disruption is done, but this will get his attention. I move the B-17's out of China to India for awhile. San Fernando is shock attacked. The Japanese get a 5 to 1 against level 2 forts, and surprisingly the 11th PA division surrenders rather than retreat. Minor disablement of Japanese regiments. First big reinforcement convoys approach Christmas Island, which I am building up.

30 Dec 41 Singawang falls. I had mines there, but no sign of any hits. BB Ise and BB Nagato, unescorted, again bombard Wenchow. Now I have multiple Dutch subs and a minelaying sub on the way. Can't pass up this opportunity. In China, Tsiaotso falls. Most of my units had moved out, the remaining ones were trying to leave. Near Nanyang, another Chinese corp is crushed. My defenses in the woods north of Nanyang are shaping up now. I'm evacuating Nanyang, a clear hex, also. Kuala Lumpur falls, with my remnants retreating due west. I'll cut the rail line if given the opportunity. Moulmein falls.

30 Dec 41: China Japanese are advancing in 3 areas: Canton towards Kukong (Label 1) - reinforcements arriving at Kukong. I should be able to hold Kukong, but will have problems being flanked. Sinyang towards Nanyang and beyond (Label 2) - I'm evacuating Nanyang and setting up my line in the woods to the north (red line on map). Kaifeng towards the west - Loyang and Chengchow have been evacuated. Trying to get everything I can to the woods. Other notes: Chuhsien in the south should hold for awhile. He's not committing large numbers of troops in the south, so far. Nothing approaching Wenchow, except for the battleship bombardments. Near Nanchang, one Japanese unit probed out to the southeast, but found more Chinese troops in the woods than he could handle. 30 Dec 41 - Malaysia and Borneo Japanese take Kuala Lumpur, but are using just a few units. Malaysia is weakly defended, with a little more combat power west of Mersing with an Australian unit. Singapore is very weakly held. On Borneo, Singkawang falls. Besides his amphibious force there, he has at least one surface combat group. Carriers including CV Kaga sit on the coast to the east. This has been a predictable pattern. All invasions are thoroughly covered. This has slowed his advance. I've altered my defense to be less aggressive, so as not to lose ships for little gain. The Dutch surface fleet (not shown) is trying to bombard Manando in the next turn or two. The Brit fleet and the US fleet have left the area. KB is still suspected to be in the Rabaul area. 30 Dec 41 - Philippines More troops appear to be arriving on the north coast. Philippine units in the north fall back to Clark. Bataan is pulling all the supply it can. Japanese troops also approach Manila from the south. The Philippines, except for Bataan, will probably be wrapped up fairly quickly for the Japanese. No further action seen on Mindanao. 31 Dec 41 A Japanese SC hits a mine at Singawak, probably sinking it. A small victory, but that's all the Allies are getting at this point. I tried to move a couple of Dutch CL's and DD's to Manando to bombard. I knew there were Betty's based there, but last time they did not have torpedoes. First I-160 gets a torpedo hit on CL Java, which aborts the mission, disbands in Kendari's port, and goes into Pier mode repair. I'd never seen a ship automatically go into Pier mode repair before. I would have preferred it not, as now it will take 2 more days to get it out of the port, and he will most likely bomb the port from Manando. With my fleet still down by Kendari, Betty's attack with torpedoes, getting a hit on CL Tromp. I guess I was lucky, as Betty's fly morning and afternoon, but only get 1 torpedo hit. I have been unsuccessful in doing any surprise naval intercepts, other than sending in some PT boats here and there. Kudos to my opponent, he's slow and steady, and covers his bases, literally. An abandoned Chengchow is lost. East of Canton, in the woods, a Japanese division and one artillery unit crush a Chinese corp, getting a 3 to 1. The road is open to Kukong now, which I'm reinforcing as much as I can. Jesselton falls. I've identified Chinese units that can be bought out with political points. There aren't many, but there are some near the Burma border, and others being routed in eastern China. If I can, and have time to move them through Burma, I'll buy them out, move them to India, and rebuild them there.

1 Jan 42 A new year. Good to get the first month of the game done. It can only get better, right? Japanese subs make more attempts to hit the fleeing Dutch cruisers and destroyers. The damaged CL Java is not bombed in Kendari port. CV Soryu, probably not alone, makes an appearance near Port Moresby. Other task forces are in trail. He's coming for Port Moresby, as he's already past Milne Bay. I have several subs in the area, and SS Salmon gets a shot at Soryu, but misses with 4 fish. Philippine P-26's, left alone at Bataan, move to Manila and make a strafing attack on shipping at San Fernando. The Japanese again have things covered, this time with Oscars and Nates, and most of the P-26's are lost, with no bombing or strafing hits. A cruiser and 2 destroyers were the missed targets. Tarakan is invaded. Coastal guns get a couple of hits. Interestingly, an xAK is hit once, and starts fuel burning. 12 non combat squads are disabled. Bad idea to load fuel on a ship with men. Must have been a mistake, since there's no reason to take fuel to Tarakan. In China, an almost evacuated Nanyang is lost. Another Chinese corp is hurt badly. It had better get tougher for the Japanese in the woods between Nanyang and Sian. Not sure what I'm going to do with the 4 US carriers, but they are about to sortie from the West Coast. Much pilot training is in progress on them.

Some xAKs have a specific hold for fuel in bulk. If these xAKs are loaded with troops, even if you specify "Do Not Load Fuel" they will fill the tank with fuel after supply is loaded in the other holds. The AI seems to treat the fuel as more supply rather than a different load.

Good point BBfanboy. I try really hard not to load troops on any transport that also loads fuel. Any kind of hit on the ship, and it is more than likely lost when the fuel ignites. And that means the loss of the troops.

2 Jan 42 Landing continues at Tarakan. My coastal guns get a few more good hits. Jap attack goes off at 1-2 and doesn't touch the 2 forts. With the casualties, though, the Dutch will be worn down quickly. My mines dropped just south of Rabaul are starting to be swept. Unknown if anything hit one. Port Moresby is invaded by the 4th Division. Most of what little defense starts there had been removed, leaving 0 AV. He didn't know that. With a whole division, it was going down regardless. Japanese carrier(s) move closer to Cairns while covering the Port Moresby invasion. I can't tell how many carriers are there, but it's beginning to look like all of KB is not here. US carriers will rendezvous off the West Coast and head towards danger.

3 Jan 42 Port Moresby falls. Australia is weakly defended, but I'm doing what I can. I won't defend too far north, for the most part, but I'm not evacuating anything south. Just holding back the good units for Sydney, for now. Japanese carriers disappeared south of Port Moresby, but a US sub is still getting lit up with D/L, so it's still in the area. A Dutch sub will mine the Chinese coast east of Wenchow. It's a hex that the Japanese battleships have been transiting on bombardment runs. A few other subs are on the way. East of Sian, on the poor track northwest of Loyang, Japanese units probe with a bombardment attack. Assault values show that he doesn't have enough to win in one attack. More Chinese are on the way and setting up in the area. This contested hex is rough terrain. I did a token bombing with Chinese bombers last turn. The advance toward Singapore continues. Port Swettenham falls. CL Java, which had diverted to Kendari and automatically went into Pier mode, does it again. I changed it's mode to remove it from the port, waited the 3 days, and set a destination south. It automatically diverted again to Kendari, and went into Pier mode again. I'll try again, and next time I'll be sure to make it's movement in Absolute mode. It's flotation damage is over 70, so it may not make it, but it certainly won't sitting in Kendari port.

No worries jmalter, when I said that my carriers are heading towards danger, all I meant was that they are leaving the safety of the West Coast. :) They will steam to New Zealand, I think, and await developments in the Solomons. If KB, which is now near Port Moresby, heads towards Java, then I may have an opportunity. If I show my carriers, they would then, most likely, head back to port and await upgrades. I doubt they would get lucky against something unescorted, as my opponent has been extremely mindful about that. But I could get him to bring KB all the way back to the area if I am seen.

4 Jan 42 Another deliberate Japanese attack at Tarakan fails, again at 1 to 2, and doesn't touch the forts, but the Dutch take twice the number of casualties, so it's just a matter of time. The major story of this turn is in the woodline north of Nanyang. The Chinese are overstacked but have good combat value here. The Japanese may be overstacked also. His combat troops do not seem to have suffered much in his attack. I am at a loss to explain how so many support troops could be lost but no guns. It's not like you have a lot of heavy artillery to reach behind his lines. I suspect his engineer regiment was the only one attacking or got a really bad roll from the combat calculations. To relieve your overstacking, you can move out your Army HQs to the hex behind and they will still be within supporting range of the fighting troops.

Thanks BBfanboy. When my opponent's email with the turn arrived, he said that he thought this was the first instance of the stacking rules kicking in our game. I thought for sure that I got trashed again, as I was overstacked. I was surprised to see it was lopsided the other way. I am trying to move out a couple of units. They just couldn't get out of the hex in time. It was a combination of defense and fleeing for me.

5 Jan 42 I-21 is sighted near Hilo but evades ASW. He spots a big xAK task force inbound to Pearl Harbor. Rangoon undergoes the first sweep of Zeros. A combination of Blen IF's and Buffalos defend, but take about 10 losses. No Zeros are lost. At Batavia, a strike of 18 Nells escorted by 9 Zeros flys from the northwest corner of Borneo, attacking and sinking 3 HDML's that had fled Singapore. CAP does well, though, downing approximately 3 Nells. Ground forces at Manila are bombed for the first time. Japanese forces build in strength just to the south. Having trouble taking Tarakan, Japanese reinforcements are landed. East of Sian in China, on a rough hex, Japanese forces bombard the Chinese again, doing about 50 casualties. There are not enough attackers to take this hex, and two more Chinese units are about to reinforce. In Malaysia, Malacca is taken, as the advance south continues. With Port Moresby lost, KB (or some part of it) disappears somewhere between Milne Bay, Rabaul, and Buin.

Wow apb, losing Port Moresby so early is a bit of a blow - it may point to aggressive designs on NE Oz. Duck & cover! However, he must bring engrs & supply to PM to develop its potential, using transports direct to PM rather than over the Kokoda trail. Those transports must round the SE tip of New Guinea, so PBY NavSearch from Townsend should alert to his intentions.

It certainly is an early push at Port Moresby, and with an entire infantry division. I did not want to put up a fight there, and now I'm glad I didn't reinforce it. I would have lost everything I could have placed there this early. I have many subs in the Coral Sea. My mining near Rabaul was spotted, and those mines are being swept. I'd hoped to catch something big, like KB, going into or out of Rabaul. I have sufficient search capability in NE Australia, so I will see if something is coming for Australia, but there's not much that can be done this early. I will contest any move to Australia, though.

6 Jan 42 More unloading at Tarakan, and again, the Dutch CD guns get a few hits. Not enough damage to change the final result, but some annoying xAK hits for the Japanese. At Rangoon, yesterday's Zero sweep was followed by today's Oscar sweep. Today, I rested the Brit fighters, so no battle here. Troops in Manila are bombed again. Nothing has moved in yet. Temuloh, in Malaysia, falls. A shock attack at Tarakan fails, with a 1 to 1 attack and forts reduced to 1. Japanese losses are twice the Dutch losses. A brave defense going on here, however futile it will end up being.

7 Jan 42 A Dutch sub near Tarakan takes a pounding from a PB dropping charges. It will survive, but it was an impressive attack from a weak ASW platform. Bettys join in the bombing of the resolute defenders of Tarakan, and the base is taken. Manila ground forces are bombed. 10 enemy units are massed just to the south of town. Singapore airfield is bombed. There are no Allied planes there any more. In China, near Sinyang, a guerrilla Chinese unit cutting a rail line is destroyed. Also, an empty Loyang is captured. Near Peiping, another guerrilla Chinese unit is kicked off of a rail line, but it survives and will head to a nearby mountain hex. In Malaysia, Port Dickson is taken. The most interesting thing this turn is that Japanese battleships approach Wenchow, China to bombard again. He has done this twice before, and I noted his identical approach path. They stopped in the hex that I had dropped mines. No sign of hitting anything. And I have 4 Dutch subs on their path. They've already gone over 2 of them, no sightings. Hopefully they go back the same way they come in. Did report 4 ships this time, so maybe some escorts with them now. I'd really like to see them hit some mines and/or take a Dutch torpedo or two.

8 Jan 42 Another sub versus sub encounter, and another set of Japanese torpedoes missing. This was I-9 versus Swordfish near Espirtu Santo. Battleships Ise and Nagato bombard Wenchow again, right on schedule. No signs of hitting mines inbound or outbound, and none of the four Dutch subs intercept. One sub is spotted. He'll be back, so we stay. In Burma, the 1st Burma Division is bombed at Pegu. Multiple enemy units are across the river. No sign of movement yet. 2 Allied small xAKL's try to sneak into Balikpapan to pick up some fuel, but Bettys from Menando take them out. Manus Island, west of Rabaul, is invaded. A couple of hexes east of Canton, China, a Japanese artillery bombardment occurs. Most of the smaller units that attacked Hong Kong are here. Interesting that it seems that he didn't extract all the unrestricted units, but is using them in China. The probing bombardment shows fairly even odds in the forest.

Subs have a much better chance to intercept if they are patrolling in the hex where his movement ends after the night or day phase. The AI seems to finish moving the Japanese forces before dealing with the Allied ones so the Allied ships/subs have time to make an attack. I presume intercepts that take place while both TFs are moving are pre-calculated for paths crossing and a chance that they may not see each other despite being in the same hex. But ending up in the same hex practically guarantees an attack will take place.

9 Jan 42 Pegu swept by Zeros but I have no CAP. Singapore troops bombed. Another bombardment attack east of Canton. And Manus falls. Multiple task forces appear northeast of Kendari. Carriers, probably CVL's, spotted. Subs defending Kendari area, nothing more. The Dutch CL that was damaged in Kendari's port left a few turns ago, and has past Timor southbound. It should be safe. Absolute movement setting seemed to be the trick to prevent it from autodisbanding back into Kendari when I wanted it to leave. More troops spotted near Pegu in Burma. That makes sense BBfanboy. I can't put subs into the known approach spot, since I've mined that coastal hex, but I can go right into Wenchow. I will try that next.

10 Jan 42 US Sub torpedoes Japanese ship! Yes, it can happen. With an S sub. S-39 hits xAK Lima Maru, outbound from Port Moresby. It had troops aboard. Recon makes me believe that the Japanese 4th Infantry Division, which took Port Moresby, was loaded back up and is headed back toward Rabaul. Too early to draw any conclusions from this. The 1st Burma Division is bombed at Pegu again. The 15th Army is said to be planning a Rangoon attack. It was last seen northeast of Moulmein. I expect a cross-river attack at Pegu soon. The 33rd division was spotted on the trail from Raheng, so he may wait for that unit. Kendari is invaded. 2 carrier groups protect the landing. One group is just southeast of Kendari, the other is well northeast. Small carriers suspected. Manila is bombarded by artillery. Assault values shown to be 3 to 1 in favor of the Japanese. US carriers are east of Christmas Island, and will refuel from tankers at a dot base to the south. They will then proceed west to New Zealand. Small ARD's, evacuated from Java, are nearing Perth. It's a long slow trip moving just a hex or two a day. When Kendari falls, Soerbaja will be within Betty range, so the last ships are preparing to leave. One last Brit base force evacuee from Kuantan, north of Singapore, is being airlifted into Batavia. I've evacuated between 25 and 30 units from Malaysia, mostly Indian, some base forces. Most are now scattering in India, covering unoccupied inland bases, some potential coastal invasion sites, boosting air support at Ledo, etc. The Japanese move toward Singapore has not been as fast as it could have been, considering how much I pulled out.
