KB could very well be in the Indian Ocean already. My only spotting ability is subs running between Sumatra and Thailand. They've spotted a battleship task force, and now an AO task force, but who knows what else has already gone north. I do have Catalina's at Columbo, but they may spot something too late there. Whatever is going on, it will unfold in the next week. I don't think he sent a battleship to guard the Rangoon area. This is a fun time for the Japanese player, when the targets that are mostly expected to be taken have been taken, and "Phase 3" targets become tempting. I'm enjoying this part of the game also, scrambling to build defenses and trying to anticipate the next moves.

19 Mar 42 More hints that India/Burma will be heating up soon: 4/5th Division is loaded on xAP Hakusan Maru moving to Victoria Point. 304th Ship Eng Coy is loaded on AMC Bankok Maru moving to Rangoon. Burma - Near the Indian frontier, Bhamo is lost to Yokosuka 1st SNLF. A small Indian unit will cut the trail south of Bhamo in a week or so, just to be a nuisance. China - Pucheng is bombed and has another artillery attack. Clark AFB - Same old bombing and artillery here also. Near Kuala Lumpur - The last Indian unit stranded in the jungle is eliminated after cutting the rail line. Its parent division can now be formed in India.

Lost a nice long update... The highlight of the turn is SigInt of another division loaded and moving to Victoria Point. That's the second one noted in just a couple of days. Stuff is moving. Burma is already secured by the Japanese, so it will be Ceylon and/or India soon. At Java, my Dutch PT's hit an AMC today, and an S sub torpedoed it also. Both sides are stacked at Malang, now, in the mountains. Raw AV shows that the Japanese may need more troops here. But Dutch troops are weak, even in the mountains, so we'll see.

21 Mar 42 Near Victoria Point Plenty of activity between Phuket and Rangoon. Near Mergui, SS Seal takes a shot at a destroyer in a task force with BB Hyuga, 2 CA's, and 5 DD's. Seal misses and takes a light ASW counter-attack. Having spotted a tiny AMc at Sabang, the Japanese move CL Tatsuta and 2 DD's there and finish it off. Near Phuket, a large AO task force is spotted and attacked by SS Truant. This looks like the same AO force spotted earlier in the week. Truant gets one hit on a big AO, and it's loaded with fuel, leaving it burning. It will certainly sink. The AO task force was plotted moving north, along with everything else. 21 Mar 42 Burma/India Japanese units spotted moving into the jungle northeast of Swebo. Some units defend the dot base there on the rail line. It might hold for awhile. It might not. Naval search is being performed out of Akyab, spotting task force near Rangoon. B-17's are flying out of Calcutta now, doing recon of Rangoon itself. Just southwest of Rangoon, a load of sub mines were just dropped. An Australian unit just arrived at Diamond Harbor. If there is going to be a landing, I want to encourage one at Chittagong, or preferably, south of Chittagong, making the Japanese use the bad trail. A minelayer CM is headed to Chittagong. It was spotted this turn, so it will be LR capped from Calcutta. It is only moving 4 hexes a turn, so it is vulnerable. I have a minelaying sub loitering between Chittagong and Calcutta, waiting to decide where to drop, hopefully just in front of an invasion task force. I've covered a lot of the bases behind the lines in India. This is possible because so many units were evacuated from Singapore earlier. In India, the best and biggest units are staying at Bombay and Karachi for now. In India, I have time, and space, and I hope to dictate the use of my good units. 22 Mar 42 Clark AFB - The usual air attacks. I do note that there are more units showing up in Manila than before. No doubt reinforcements are on the way. China - 2 of the 4 Chinese units that were kicked out of Pucheng were air attacked today, slowing them down. Japanese units must be pursuing. New Guinea - An undefended Milne Bay is invaded by a small unit. Java - Another artillery bombardment at Malang. I'm hoping that I've thrown a wrench into the Japanese plans here. It will be resolved with either more troops here or another landing elsewhere, but hopefully this will delay things a bit. Burma/India - Only one of the previously spotted task forces is seen this turn. Just a few ships seen, showing patrol boats and a CV. This is odd, and I've seen it for two turns. Maybe a CVE, who knows. I realign my subs to blockade the approaches to Rangoon. Still no sign of the mines outside Rangoon hitting anything. Chittagong is successfully mined with no air attack on the Allied CM. I'm still not sure what is up in this theater. I am sure that at least 2 new infantry divisions were loaded and went to Victoria Point. That could be a jumping off point for many destinations.

23 Mar 42 Java - The 4 remaining brave Dutch PT boat commanders head back into the fight near Probolinggo. This time no transports are found, just cruisers and destroyers. Combat is joined at night at 8000 yards, and doesn't get closer than 7000. All Japanese shells miss, and no damage is done. At Malang, a Japanese artillery attack causes 24 Japanese casualties and no Dutch losses. Northeast of Port Blair - 2 destroyers find S-23, but miss with all charges. This encounter was several hexes northeast of Port Blair, not on a route for ships moving up the coast. It was more out in the open ocean, possibly on a route towards Ceylon or the Indian coast near Viz. Or just a couple of destroyers on ASW duty. I've upped the search activity from Ceylon to Chittagong. Near Cochin - 2 Brit destroyers find I-122 and get 7 hits on it, including one major hit. The ASW task force plots a course to round Ceylon, just as this sub will probably do to RTB. 3 hexes northeast of Diego Garcia - I-165 finds the big Allied minelayer Kung Wo, sinking it with 2 torpedoes. The CM was supposed to have dropped mines at Diego Garcia, but didn't. It started the turn at Diego, with a destination of Diego and a home base of Columbo, and mining set to on. I think I've screwed this up this way before. Well, the Japanese will certainly suspect mines at Diego now regardless. Akyab - Nell's escorted by Zeros bomb the base force here. The small unit across the river may be crossing, or an amphibious invasion may be imminent. Palembang - The always persistent but rarely successful Dutch air force trys to hit a task force at Palembang. I took a chance that maybe his fighters were elsewhere. The Zero's were gone, but the Oscars were still there. Despite Dutch fighters as escorts, 13 Dutch planes are lost with no Zero's lost, and no ships hit. Small patrol craft and a destroyer were targeted. Clark AFB - Artillery bombardment again. Rough AV's are just about 2 to 1 for the Japanese. There are no forts here due to previous combat and ongoing base damage. Northern Australia - somewhat near Wyndham, a Japanese armor unit catches up to a fleeing Australian base unit, and kicks it off the trail into the desert. 4 B-17's will counter-attack the armor in the open tomorrow, hopefully. Alice Springs has a size 3 airfield and is building nicely.

Don't know how many times I have had a Minelayer go to target hex, sight an enemy ship and bug out no matter how innocuous the enemy ship is. So what happens next? The Minelayer RTBs and .... lays the mines at home base! [:@]. Before I noticed this happening I even sent a Minelayer back out to target (not in ML TF but a Support TF, planning to change just before arrival at target), and then when I tried to give it orders for the mine drop it would not form a Minelaying TF. [:(] At times like that I feel really stupid ... no shouts of agreement from the gallery please!! [:-]

24 Mar 42 Borneo - Japanese ships find mines outside of Palembang, but don't hit any. Australia - Now Lily's bomb the doomed tiny Aussie base force crossing the desert south of Wyndham. B-17's don't fly, were supposed to have bombed the small armor unit nearby. Java - Malang is bombed. Minimal damage on the airfield, and it's irrelevant anyhow, as no fort building can occur with no engineers. China - 50 bombers hit fleeing Chinese near Pucheng. Sumatra - Troops at Djambi are bombed. Enemy troops approach. Burma - At Akyab, paras are dropped. The Japanese paras get a 1 to 1 attack and drop the forts to 1. Allied casualties are 110, only 13 for the attackers. I thought I had enough to handle paras, but apparently not. B-17's will bomb the para unit this turn, hopefully, but a Japanese unit is showing movement across the river. The base will fall. But the question is, where is all the activity in the Indian Ocean? It was there, and never showed up at Rangoon. Defenses continue to prepare from Ceylon to Chittagong. CV Hornet appears at Balboa. It will join the Brit carrier at Los Angeles, which is trailing the US carriers between Christmas Island and the West Coast. Many ships will start upgrades on April 1, including the carriers.

My money is on the Japanese going for Diego Garcia, Addu and/or Socotra for their initial IO invasions. Once they cut off the incoming reinforcements and supply, India is in big trouble.

That's possible. The activity was around Victoria Point, and included loaded AO's. They didn't go to Rangoon. It would require a wide circle around Ceylon, but it could be done. This kind of move, though, does not match the style of play of my opponent, at least what I've seen so far. It would be quite a bold move and quite a surprise for me. I'm hoping that our use of the extended map will make isolating India tougher.

25 Mar 42 Diamond Harbour - Battleships Hyuga, Yamashiro, and Fuso bombard Diamond Harbour. 662 casualties, mostly non-combat. The coastal guns are still in good shape. A BB task force, probably this one, is spotted 3 hexes to the southwest during the day. The interesting thing is nothing else is spotted. Is this a ruse? Maybe just a probe to see what units are there? I just don't know yet. I did my orders as if the invasion will be here and in the next turn. Besides an Indian unit, an Australian brigade is here. Another Australian brigade just arrived here in Strat mode, but would take 3 days to switch to Combat, so I plotted it to move to Calcutta this turn instead. A minelayer and some small transports at Calcutta will try to flee west along the coast. A single patrol craft will move from Calcutta to Diamond Harbor. Calcutta - The single Flying Tigers group here, still flying H-81's, takes a lot of casualties from a Zero sweep. In all, losses are 12 H-81's and 5 Buffaloes, while taking down 4 Zero's. The quiet air war is now over. Ceylon - Some patrol craft get minor hits on I-162 near Columbo. Then 3 destroyers get 3 major hits on I-162, sinking it. These destroyers will now head way west into the open ocean west of Ceylon, looking for a possible end run attack to western India. Search planes are moved to Addu to search out that way. Hopefully it isn't closing the barn door too late. Akyab - Paras assault the base again, getting a 2 to 1 and lowering the forts to 0. (Forts are built back to 1 now) Casualties were even. CVL Hermes is passing through the Panama Canal on the way to the West Coast. It looks like the other carriers will beat Hermes there by about a week, but used on-map fuel and took system damage staying on the map. In summary, the Japanese intentions are still not known. My guess is that Diamond Harbour is the target, and my search planes have just done a terrible job. I have subs scouring the area now. If my opponent has lulled me to sleep with his conservative play, only to spring a landing by Bombay or Karachi or something like that, kudos to him. I'm still as ready as I can be. It just isn't ready enough.

Those "non-combat" (support) troops in your naval fortress are the guys that man the guns. Even if no guns were disabled, there may not be much firing if lots of squads were disabled.

26 Mar 42 India - It's no ruse. Diamond Harbour is invaded. PC Haideri, sortied from Calcutta, defends the Indian coast alone, and slips into the invasion task force. The task force is huge, with a CL, 6 DD's, 3 DMS's, 2 PB's, 6 AK's, 16 xAK's, and 9 xAP's. Haideri creates great confusion in the task force, and 3 separate collisions occur. xAP Dairen Maru collides with xAP Manzyu Maru at 52 , 38 xAK Igasa Maru collides with xAP Montevideo Maru at 52 , 38 xAK Hokuriku Maru collides with xAP Montevideo Maru at 52 , 38 Then Haideri is sunk with a follow-up combat with a few cruisers. In multiple landing phases, coastal guns do get some good hits on combat and transport ships. CA Chokai, Shell hits 1 CL Kashii, Shell hits 6, on fire DD Shinonome, Shell hits 1 DD Umikaze, Shell hits 4, on fire xAK Kinugawa Maru, Shell hits 1, heavy fires DD Kisaragi, Shell hits 1 DD Mutsuki, Shell hits 2, on fire xAK Awazisan Maru, Shell hits 2, on fire xAK Ayatosan Maru, Shell hits 1, on fire xAK Nako Maru, Shell hits 1 xAK Zenyo Maru, Shell hits 2 I-155 picks off a fleeing xAK. Few troops are lost and the landing proceeds. In a stroke of terrible luck, last turn, an Australian brigade arrived in Strat mode at Diamond Harbor. The choice was to take 3 days to get it into combat mode, or move it out. I chose to move it to Calcutta while still in Strat mode. Unfortunately, it didn't move. Apparently the check for Allied movement is after Japanese movement, because the landing prevented the unit from Strat moving out. It's now switching to combat mode but that will take 2 days and it will get smashed by then. The Allies have 361 AV at Diamond Harbour now, but part is in Strat mode. Not good. Calcutta has decent defense, but it will probably fall too, although maybe not instantaneously. 3 carriers are spotted 3 hexes off shore. Vals sink an Allied xAK fleeing Calcutta. Swordfish escorted by Buffaloes attack invasion shipping, but run into far more Zero's on CAP. Almost every Allied plane is lost. Enemy air units spotted are from Akagi, Soryu, Hiryu, Shokaku, and Zuikaku. I guess that answers that question. An unescorted P39 strafing attack on the shipping occurs. The Japanese do start to recon bases north of Calcutta. At least I anticipated this, and have every base within reasonable range defended. This was aided by my big evacuation of Singapore earlier. Elsewhere,at Akyab, the enemy paras try a shock attack, get a 1 to 1 lowering the forts back to 0 (which are instantly rebuilt to 1 again). Casualties are even. The issue is still in doubt. You could put the Australian division in Reserve mode instead of combat while it unpacks. It will not contribute any AV to the battle but will not be bearing the brunt of an assault and will likely flee the hex as soon as the Fortress falls. Saving this unit from decimation is very important right now.

The die is already cast for the next turn. It is an Australian brigade, not a division, that is changing from Strat mode. Still important though. I don't want to flee Calcutta without a fight, though. But I also don't want to risk it all there. The Brit division that I have is staying at Karachi for now. There's also a division at Bombay. Not sure what type it is. I don't think this is a "take everything" invasion. 3 divisions have landed. There are still 2 divisions at Clark. About 2 in Java. I still show 20 units at Singapore. One division there needed a couple of months to recover, I think.

The Japanese attack goes at 13 to 1, making the forts irrelevant. I include the casualty count and the unit listing to better explain what units are here, and what units no longer exist. I wasn't trying any air attacks, knowing that KB has LR CAP over the invasion point. This turn was a reality check, and the reality is that the Japanese can go anywhere and take anything right now. I need to have patience to prepare to hold a line somewhere and prepare to eventually counterattack. Akyab - More paras (and/or supply) dropped, but the Japanese only get a 1 to 2 attack, do not lower the fort level, and take slightly fewer casualties than the Allies. It's become an attritional battle of small units.

I would retreat the Australian units because their TOE will soon change to include better anti-armour ratings. Use some throw-away Indian units with a few engineers to put up a fight in Calcutta, just to damage/destroy some of the industry during the battle. You get quite a few Indian units and Indian infantry squads are relatively plentiful, but all the artillery and AA and some of the engineers are drawn from British pools, so it takes forever to rebuild a unit. They are OK to garrison uncontested bases.

Just read your reply BBfanboy. Good advice. I had already finished the turn, but I am retreating the Australian units. The Aussies were surprisingly intact after the defeat at Diamond Harbour. The Indian units took most of the losses, by far. I am leaving enough Indian units in Calcutta to fulfill the garrison and hopefully damage the place on the way out. I have 2 units of Hurri's at Calcutta on CAP, and a couple more fighter units on LR CAP from nearby. I had 2 tiny TK's in port there, so I formed them into a task force and left them as targets. KB is right on the coast, just southeast of Calcutta. Maybe I can kill some pilots. Units near rail lines east of Calcutta, all the way to Ledo, are evacuating for the most part, minus some units holding possible para bases. At Calcutta, 1 Aussie brigade is in Strat mode with no delay, and 2 are in Strat mode with 1 day delay. Both should escape. The last, along with some other units, will move out in Move mode. I spent a lot of time looking at this turn. I documented every available unit in the South Pacific, and every unit that is loaded on the way to the South Pacific. I am going to start being more aggressive in building up and occupying bases from Pago Pago to Suva to Noumea to Efate to Luganville to Ndeni. Tulagi and Shortlands is still just a 1 AF, so my only worry is small carriers, with KB so far away. I'm leading my occupation with AVD's and AVP's, which will sit in a base where I'll bring in search capabilities. Then I'll start shipping in stuff. More details on this to come.

28 Mar 42 Diamond Harbour - KB and a battleship task force moves east adjacent to Chittagong. About a dozen transports are disbanded in Diamond Harbour's port. Some fighters are based there now. I wouldn't doubt that there is more LR CAP from KB. I've been heavily capping Calcutta, but there's been no attack there, even on my bait tankers. This turn everything is sweeping Diamond Harbour, and about 16 B-17's will attempt to bomb the port. Enemy troops show movement toward Calcutta. No surprise there. At Calcutta, units are attempting to move out, some in Strat mode, some in Move mode. Malang - The Dutch Air Force ambushes 25 Sally's bombing ground units at Malang. No escort is with the bombers. 9 Sally's are shot down with no loss to the Dutch. SigInt - 29 Army is loaded on destroyers moving to Diamond Harbour. The initial landings weren't done with destroyer transports, so this is new. I'd be very surprised if the only unit being landed was a HQ. Could this mean more of a commitment to India? We shall see.

29 Mar 42 India/Burma - Dutch sub KXV attacks a surface group nearing Rangoon, but the torpedoes miss an already smoking destroyer. Zero's sweep Calcutta but find no CAP up. Instead, Hurricanes from Calcutta sweep Diamond Harbor, and find about a dozen Zero's based there and on CAP. 3 Hurri's are lost, and 8 Zero's go down. Following the sweeps, 4 B-17's bomb Diamond Harbour's port, aiming for already damaged transports. xAK Fushimi Maru is hit and is burning. 2 B-17's are shot down. Japanese units are moving to Calcutta but haven't moved yet. At Akyab, KB strikes with 45 Kate's escorted by 55 Zero's, hitting the airbase. Akyab's defender's days are numbered, with more Japanese about to cross the river into town, but they've done a great job delaying, and messed up the Japanese para unit pretty well. KB moved southwest last turn, stopping 6 hexes from Akyab. I wouldn't be surprised to see a Columbo raid in the next few days, or even an invasion of Ceylon. Near Katha, in the jungles of Burma nearing India, a small Burmese unit is eliminated by a tank regiment and an infantry regiment. I was already moving out of Katha so those units should escape. It won't be long until all bases in Burma connected directly by rail or road to Rangoon will be lost. Medan - The Japanese are content to just bomb the troops there in the clear hex. I should probably retreat north along the road into the jungle terrain. Terapo (northwest of Port Moresby) - The undefended base in invaded. 2 remnants of units from Port Moresby had almost walked through the jungle to here. Now they will starve in the jungle. West Coast - US carriers will arrive at San Francisco next turn. There will be many upgrades to perform on April 1. The Brit carrier will arrive at Los Angeles in a few days, where it will pair up with CV Hornet, which will arrive from Panama soon. The next few weeks will be a time of much upgrading, for US carriers, cruisers, destroyers, and subs. Many get radar at this time.

30 Mar 42 Diamond Harbour - Small minesweeper Sophie Marie is sunk trying to flee from Calcutta. There's nowhere exit except through Diamond Harbour, and 4 destroyers were waiting. Only 2 tiny tankers remain at Calcutta. I'll make the Japanese come and get them, and brave the minefields. Akyab - The ground units here are bombed by 31 Nell's. A shock attack by teh 2nd Raiding Regiment here goes badly for the Japanese, getting a 1 to 2 attack against fort level 1. The Allies don't have enough to win the fight here, though, so it's just a matter of time till Japanese reinforcements arrive. Terapo - The last base near Port Moresby falls. West Coast - US carriers go to San Francisco area repair yards. Many ships will upgrade. The Brit carrier will upgrade at Los Angeles. KB - KB disappears. Considering where the Allied subs are in the area, it is most likely that KB headed southwest and is angling for a Ceylon strike from the southeast or south. It is not likely that KB headed toward Rangoon. Elsewhere, the Japanese are still stalled at Clark AFB and Malang, Java.

31 Mar 42 Diamond Harbour - Japanese forces have still not moved into Calcutta. It is interesting that no armor units have been spotted here so far. None. This points to either a limited offensive, or another landing later, or somewhere else. KB is missing for the 2nd day in a row. Chittagong - Nell's bomb the ground units here, hitting the static unit. Other units are moving out. This may be just an info gathering attack. I don't see any new invasion task forces approaching, but who knows. Madioen (Java) - Oscar's sweep here. No CAP here, and no fighters based here either. Malang (Java) - The daily artillery attack occurs. This mountain hex cannot be taken with the enemy units here now. Clark AFB - The bombing here has increased. Minimal damage to units, but supply is slowly decreasing. Just over 10k supply total including here and Bataan. Other notes: Recently received SigInt of heavy activity at Rabaul. This was the first time for this base. Kwajalein had been giving this message, but that has stopped for about a week. A Japanese sub got a sniff of a small xAP task force east of Noumea. It is heading to Luganville, but probably looks like it would be going to Noumea. Allied units are on the move to Pago Pago, Noumea, Suva, Efate, and Luganville. Task forces are coordinating movement so as to all arrive at a given base on the same turn, to limit reaction time for the enemy. I'm taking some risk here, as I have no carriers supporting, and just a few combat ships embedded into the transport task forces. I've seen no indication of enemy carriers. All of the big carriers are in the Indian Ocean, but small ones could be here. I want to simultaneously occupy these bases with more than minimal forces, and plan on staying.

1 Apr 42 Katha, Burma - The Japanese 14th Tank Regiment attacks the BFF Brigade, gets a 2 to 1, and lowers the forts to 1. BFF was trying to Strat move out of Katha and got caught before it could leave. Then it is taking 2 turns to change to combat mode. It'll get kicked out before that happens. Other units made it out to the east. Calcutta - Japanese units finally enter the city. Attacks will begin next turn. Defense is just enough to satisfy the 200 garrison requirement. The big question is what next? Only 3 Japanese divisions landed at Diamond Harbour, so it won't be a broad advance. Not without reinforcements.
