So I am thinking on a late war Japanese carrier doctrine and I have decided to not use the carrier's organic assets for scouting, but instead use the 4 converted battleships plus the Tone classes (with re-sizes this is a total of 110 Jakes).

This should allow me to reduce strike squadron sizes in order to increase fighter squadrons while still retaining the same overall punch. The question is....does it work? Does anyone have any data or experience on this?

No. Your carrier TF might wander into an area of bad weather, making floatplane operations impossible, and leading to your carrier TF having no search capacity.

What was the rationale for that conversion?

Does anyone actually do that conversion?

Converting battleships to carriers lasted until there were no more battleships. There were studies to modify the IOWAs to hybrids (with helicopters or Harriers) in the 1980s. And the ww2db article has problems. I don't think USS RANGER was ever used in combat in the PTO. Training - yes. Kamikaze country - not so much.

The Ranger was essentially put out to pasture as soon as enough CVEs were available for convoy duty. She served out her days as a training carrier on the West Coast.

Somebody misread the TROM on Combined Fleet. It describes the attack on the Ise as coming from a Task Group under the command of John S McCain (former captain of the Ranger). The actual carriers involved were all Essex class.
