jmalter -> Swords and '!'s (11/6/2014 9:11:05 PM)

Gotta moan about this - my base game & the new install I made for a PBEM game do not display these map icons. Crossed-swords for land combat & yellow/red '!'s for low supply or enemy partisan action don't show on my map.

I'm using the 23x10 beta, but this prob has been w/ me for over a year. Any suggestions?

You missed patches.

The betas only affect the EXE, not data. To install the game you have to install the as-shipped, then the last official patch, then the beta.

The art you speak of was in a large, official patch first put on the street in the v1.00.95 - December 7, 2009 patch. It is detailed in the Interface Addendum document in the Manuals sub-folder.

Bad news is you're missing a lot more than crossed swords. I don't know if the missing patches can be made to an on-going game. I suspect not. All of what you're missing data-wise is in the last official patch: V1.01. 08r9 – January 21, 2012

The art work can be patched in an ongoing game. The first patch including new icon sets and code to support them. The exclamation points and crossed swords were among them. The new code will only work if those icon sets are installed. If they aren't, it behaves like the original release.

Thanks for the info, Bill & Moose.

I've tried to update w/ patch 1108r9, but no joy - the autoplay updater won't install the patch, and the file I d/l'd from Matrix' Patches & Downloads page won't run either, my Win2k sez that "WarinthePacificAdmiralsEdition-UpdateComp-v1108r9.exe" is not a valid Win32 application.

Hmm. I've sent a msg to Matrix Helpdesk, mebbe they can help.

Like Moose said, I think you have to download and install the last official patch and then the beta. If you do it beta first, I think the exe changes mess up the official patch....GP

This is a good point and I have never grasped the intricacies of what can be hot-swapped into an on-going game and what can't be. But if the last official patch was skipped--IOW, the beta EXE was slapped onto the as-shipped game--there are a myriad of OOB and map changes missing from the OP's game, far more than just the map artwork included in the Interface Addendum patch early on. Hundreds of changes in fact--armor, gun performance, aircraft specs, "new" shipyards, port size limits, and many, many more.

I don't see any good answer than to go back to bare metal, install the as-shipped, install the last official, comprehensive patch, then install the beta desired, and re-start.

You are running Windows 2000??

I'll make a new install from the disk, then try the patch, b4 I add the beta.

Update - prob solved.

What it was, the installer .exe for the patch (1108r9) was incompatible w/ my Win2k OS, it wasn't ever gonna work.

But thank the gods, my sister just gifted me her old laptop, w/ WinVista & near twice as much RAM as my old box.

Installed AE on it, no probs adding the patch, no probs adding the latestbeta - cmdline switches copied proper to new shortcuts, Tracker files copied to the new box & working fine (after a bit of ditzing w/ its .bat & .properties files).

Alles in ordnung! '!' symbols in red & yellow show proper on my AE map for low-supply & low-garrison status. No probs have appeared wrt base-size in my PBEM Downfall game, 'cos I started it using a pwehex file sent to me by my oppo.

If the original game was installed on your W2K computer, you can copy the files from the updated installation on the other computer and bring the W2K installation up to date.
