gsmart04 -> WW II Africa Theatre Game? (11/9/2014 9:48:01 PM)

I'd really like to play an operational level WW II African theatre game but it seems I can't find one anywhere. Very surprising. I'm looking for one with a historical flavor and not a Panzer Corps game.

Anybody got any suggestions?

John Tillers Panzer Campaigns ... Tobruk 41, El Alamein 42, and Tunisia '43 are among my favs for that theatre

Hrmmm operational huh? Panman sorta got em all.

If you ever want to play a good tactical level game in North Africa then Combat Missions Africa Korp is a good one.

If you want to go back in time to DOS days then there's always Knights in the Desert by SSI. Plays a lot like Africa Korps by Avalon Hill. Only real difference is it's digital.

You should also check out Advanced Tactics, it had some North Africa scenarios in the original Advanced Tactics> I assume they are included in Advanced Tactics Gold.

Another one that is often overlooked is Combat Command witch is a nice easy to play operation level with some North Africa scenarios.

on cardboard, Strategy & Tactics #87 "The Desert Fox" was quite good. It had a sequel game for the campaign through the French colonies you could link up to it. Operational level but two decades deeper into war-game design than AH Afrika Korps.

I think the issue is the opinion on what qualifies as 'historical flavour'.

If a person can deal with Vassal and playing a board game via a computer, then there are scores of great games to play.

If a person just wants a complicated excessively detailed computer game played against a typical AI (ie unsatisfying), they might have troubles.

Panzer Campaigns are good. John Tiller's games are not known to have stellar AIs though. So if you are not planning to play another human, good luck.

Can always join the Blitz if you find the AI unsatisfying for the Tiller campaigns. Usually pretty easy to find a game there.

Maybe a bit to strategic a level but have a look here http://schwerpunkt.wargamer.com/Eurscen.html at scenarios 9-25.

Due for release on Dec 1st.

Tiller is download only. I haven't checked to see if NWS has Tiller's new games on CD, but I will bet that he doesn't. I bought all my HPS games from NWS actually. I couldn't pass up the discounted price. Paid full price from JTS for Campaign Overland though since I had no other choice.
