Last night I bought Down In Flames from the Battlefront website, and boy...did they gum that one up! What ought to be (and is, when you can get it to work) a fast-playing, fun air war game has been built primarily as an online game. Little wonder the game is basically dead...it's a game I want to play quickly when I take a break, not one I want to go online to play. Having said that, Matrix ought to think about such a fast-playing air war game, with the ability to paint your planes and whatever other cool things they can think up. Not saying online play is bad, but in this case it overwhelms the simplicity and quick-play nature of the game.

I would recommend Sid Meier's Ace Patrol (and/or its WW2 Pacific sequel) for a game of the same type.

Second the mention of Sid's games.

Of all the games I have encountered as a result of Steam and not coming from a wargame publisher like Slitherine Group, they have been the most entertaining.

Sid's air games just aren't realistic enough for me. They are more entry level games for kid 8 an up. I'd like to see a WWI airwar game like the one where they use real model airplanes on a stick on a tabletop map. Forget the name of it but it really looks fun and kewl. Wings of War I think the name of it is. Turn based fun like never before. Can't believe no one has made a replica of this game on the PC yet.

I was rather expecting torches and pitchforks for suggesting a mobile game.

That said, Ace Patrol is actually a port of Wings of War, or at least as close to one as possible without having to license the original game. It's really just the limit on the size of the air battles that keeps Ace Patrol from being as full a game as it could otherwise be.

Well you can try something different. If you really want to fly and having no experience, find a flight trainer and once you pass the test. Buy a license and rent a plane to fly around with it. Of course you wont be able to have guns or weapons on board.

I did this when I was a kid with my dad and it was a blast. When I made barrel rolls and loops, scared the hell out of him lol. I think I flew an ol' piper plane, it been a long time since I flew an aircraft.
