spoondog -> Would like recommendations for RTS games that will run on my Notebook? (12/4/2014 3:58:23 AM)

There are so many games to choose from on Matrix that it's hard to know which would have
features I'd like. Basically, I prefer old school RTS games like C&C series with single player
and skirmish modes, but not fantasy or space based. What I do want in an RTS game is the abilty
to be able to use the terrain to your advantage, like placing units on high locations to give
greater range and especially hiding units behind things in order to ambush enemy units, similar
to what can be done in turn based tactical games. I'm not interested in grand strategic games or
hex type wargames. Also, it must be able to run without Steam Client or similar being installed.
I only have a low spec Notebook (Laptop) PC so can't run games that require special graphics
cards.

Here are the specs:-

Model Name - Satellite C50D-A
OS Version - Microsoft Windows 8
CPU - AMD E1-1200 APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics
Physical Memory 4GB RAM
Video AMD Radeon HD 7310 Graphics

Just a few recommendations would be appreciated please. Not so many that I'll be back at square
one with too much choice.

Thanks.

It's hard to go past Company of Heroes, either the first game, or the much newer COH 2 - eastern front.
Though you probably need Steam client for this.

all steam games can be run in off line mode anyway, so client once installed doesn't need to be online either, and as most here are also hex based even though you can turn off the hexes as well, it's hard to pick tbh, better to just grab some demo's and see what takes you fancy

Take Command 2nd Mannassas should work no problem with your specs. RT tactical civil war strategy game at it's best. Holding "good ground", as well as flanking, is a very important aspect of the game.

From Matrix have a look at the Close Combat series, simple to get to grips with and one of the more RTS type game on here.
Command Ops is very good but takes more time to learn but has a whole lot more depth. The game is real time(pauseable) and has a whole ton of strategy and tactics but i would not class it as a RTS.
Give the demo a go.

You cant go wrong with Company Of Heroes (like Zombiewarrior07 says above) if you want a "RTS" game, you can get it for a dollar or two and it will run on pretty much anything no problems.

As far as I know, if you are looking C&C sort of games, there's not much in the matrix catalog that will satisfy what you are looking for. Close Combat series is about the only thing I could recommend given you stated interests, and that still isn't close to the standard RTS gameplay.

Crusader Kings I for sure and maybe CKII or EU ROME or EUIII or IV. Maybe even Norbsofts Civilwar series. I know 2nd Manassas ran on my netbook I don't know enough about your system to really say for sure though. It's a hit or miss thing without some more information. Just some of those things you mentioned though kinda say these I listed will work though and they are a lot of fun. If you can get it to work Command Ops Battles from the Bulge would be my first choice and CK2 my second.

One of my favorites too.

His system has an integrated video card and 4 GB of Ram. COH 2 would be an unplayable slideshow.

That system is not a gaming system. Wargames should run well as would Crusader Kings, HOI, Europa Universalis IV

Any RTS with 3D graphics would be iffy. Unless it was an older title.
