I don't know if these have ever been posted here...

She really was a "looker".

Yes, she was (particularly after the 1931 refit).

Thanks for posting.

Great pics. Thanks....GP

Really like the tri-pods as compared to the cage masts.

m10bob -> RE: Pictures of the USS Arizona (12/10/2014 1:05:29 PM)

These pics reveal the Arizona had already taken on the Kingfisher spotter planes. The old Revell model still carried the older biplane models....Also notice the rear gun ring clearly shown inside the greenhouse on the Kingfisher..Great shots!!

Following on from the seaplanes, another excellent thread! Loved these pictures, thanks Javakamp.

Picture 4026-6 and -8

Lattice masts are ugly... real eyesores

I don't know how great was the benefit of changing to tripod masts in terms of reduced vibration or being capable of heavier rangefinder equipment

but the "looks" by itself justified it completely

wdolson -> RE: Pictures of the USS Arizona (12/11/2014 1:09:46 AM)

I've read the cage masts tended to catch the wind and make the ship roll more. The tripod mast made the ship more stable.

Cage masts have character.

They definitely signify that the ship is a USN one.

an old one... :)

or maybe that it is from Czarist Russia!

I've always been partial.

I want to model a cage-masted ship.  Usually done with photo-etch, but one company has a nice 3D printed one which captures the taper nicely.

This appears to be a VERY nifty site. The link to 1919 Jane's would be worth it by itself.

Yep, but when all is said and done ... It's ugly ... no it's not just ugly ... it's utterly butt ugly. Looks like a hamster cage. Wouldn't put a cat in one of them, much less go to sea in it. Whoever thought that one up probably failed finger painting in grade school.

I think this is the final word here. Ugly as a toad sitting on a fence post....
