henri51 -> Husky: how to get the 2nd armor to Sicily? (12/12/2014 12:32:44 PM)

I only got the game last night, so bear with me. I have no problems with the invasion and getting most HQs and units to the shore of Sicily (although I am still wobbly on getting them ashore).

But on move 2, I am unable to get the 2nd Armored HQ or armored units to board ships. I send them to a port but I am always told that there are not enough boarding points. I tried moving them to larger ports by train, but so far I still get the ame message and they are still stuck in Africa.

Is the 2nd armor supposed to remain in Africa until a later invasion?

try breaking it down into 3 brigades, then load/unload a brigade at a time, similar with HQs check their support elements and convert as many as possible to combat units, ship those over then reconvert back to support units

I'm able to get it to Sicily, but I used regular movement to get it to port, not rail transport.

It's been a while, but my recollection is that I too moved it to port using regular movement, not rail. I just chose a big port -- I don't remember which one. I didn't have to break it down into brigades.

Same here. How you do it works for me!

Whenever you can move your units, especially Western Allies, move them by rail. Make sure of the port size before you send those armored divisions to a port, because if it's a small port it will say "insufficient port capacity" when you try to ship them. There are several ports that can handle those armored divisions and then some. If you are trying to unload a unit into a beach hex and it says "insufficient port capacity" to unload, and you have more temp. ports close, just move the unit to one that will unload it.

By the time you get them off the train they may not have enough strategic movement points (SMPs) to board the ships. So if you load them on trains and then unload them in the same turn, it's probably too much. Some units (especially armored divisions) are going to require a large port (size 3 or more should do) unless you break the unit into 3 parts, but I'm not sure if you are running into a port capacity issue or just a not enough SMPs issue. The suggestion to move by rail if possible is a good one as you will save wear and tear on equipment. However, for short range movements the loading and unloading of the trains will take you an extra turn.

Thanks for all the advice. I guess it was the Strategic movement points (SMPs) (or maybe the lack of ships or something), because I restarted the game and this time easily got the armored units to Sicily, but this time it was the big HQ (Africa HQ) that I could not get to load ( I invaded units in a different order).Do ports have a max number of units they can process during a move? Unfortunately the game crashed as I was managing air power, so I can't wait a move and see if it will work next move.

There is a maximum amount of troops you can load/unload each turn depending on the size of the port.

When you go into F3 (naval move mode) notice the number inside the port circle. This is how many 1000s of tons that can still be loaded at the port. Check the unit detail screen for the transport cost. Armored Div is probably close to 30k so you'd need a number like 30 or more in the port symbol to have enough capacity.
