Don Bowen -> Modder Fodder - interesting ships (12/17/2014 5:11:22 PM)

In looking through the Australian Merchant Ship Movement Records at: Australian Goverment Merchant Ship Movement Records
I noticed an interesting ship. Its name gave the impression of being of Aboriginal origin but the ship was Swedish. It was a motor vessel of high "service speed", which I interpret as WITP cruise speed, and therefore very useful.

Further research showed that there were four similar ships, all of which were in the Pacific. All four were owned by Rederi-A/B Transpacific and served the Australia/South Pacific route. Reported speed for these ships varies between sources. Australian Merchant Ship Movement Records indicate 16 Knots service, Talbot-Booth says 17/20, and World's Merchant Fleets gives 14.5-15 knots. I'm inclined to go with the Australian Movement Records, which is a wartime voyage record and is incidentally right in the middle.

Goonawarra: Arrived Melbourne Dec 20, 1941 from Los Angeles. Two pages of movement records show US and Australian ports for the entire Pacific War.

Kanangoora: Arrived Sydney December 8th, 1941 from Los Angeles. This is on the second of four pages of movement data through 1945, all in the Pacific

Mirrabooka: Arrived Melbourne December 6th, 1941 from Sydney. This on second of six movement pages in the Pacific.

Parrakoola: Arrived Sydney January 5, 1942, apparent from San Francisco (previous entry arrival at San Francisco 11/8/41. Also multiple pages of Pacific movement throughout the war

For some reason the name Kanangoora seems familiar. Perhaps there is a ship in the game with a similar name. Good to see you posting again Don.

And here she is. Scaled right and in her house colors. You are right on target with speeds. Service speed is actual voyage speed. Not necessarily the most economical, but these hi-speed ships were on routes where time was money and operated at the knee of the power curve. She may well have done 20 knots, when running balls-to-the-wall, but 16 knots, nominal, is a good bet. 19-20 max, 16 cruise is a good take. I'll put up the bitmap next.

The bmp file is in the attached zip file. It's in blank form so one can drop it into any background. The frame is black, so when you drop it into a shil, be sure to change the black frame with the purple shil color. [8D] Ciao. JWE

Thanks John - excellent as always.

Just lots and lots of interesting stuff in the Australian Merchant Movement Records. I'm constantly amazed and what is available on the internet these days.

I am so very bad at creating class stats even from such detailed information.

The Gross, net and Dwt and 466,000 c.f. translates in to how much cargo and what ship tonnage? Does the S.H.P at 8300 translate into an endurance number? With the speed you and JWE came up with, what would you figure the Mvr and Dur to be?

Sorry I am so slow at these sort of things.

Buck

Directed back to Don but is meant for every modder here

Sorry Laddie, I'm not that guy. I'm just the OOB guy and can only provide data what's in the books. Providing WITP specs for ships requires someone with much more knowledge. I just copy what the original AE guys provided.
