PzB74 -> Vistula scenario 1945 (12/18/2014 8:06:43 AM)

Which difficult settings should I use to make this a challenging and interesting game against the Russian AI?

PzB74 -> RE: Vistula scenario 1945 (12/19/2014 6:01:59 AM)

After 10 turns the AI has lost the battle...problem is that it's difficult to know which settings are required for a tough game against the AI.
Assume that all games must be at least challenging and when the AI is attacking Hard or Death wish is needed for it to have a chance of winning.

I didn't know that the AI was even able to lose Vistula to Berlin scenario [:)] For sure you have to increase the difficulty if you play vs the AI. IMHO it's better to play human on normal, though. Humans cheat less than AI [:D]

PzB74 -> RE: Vistula scenario 1945 (12/19/2014 9:24:56 AM)

All scenarios needs recommended difficult settings for playing AI as Axis or USSR.
I was in doubt whether the AI playing USSR in the Vistula scenario would be so overwhelming that Normal difficulty was enough.
After 10 turns the AI had 0 victory objectives and would most likely never get even close to the Oder.

To give it a fighting chance to reach Berlin I think HARD is required.

PzB,

I will play as Soviets PBEM. I too have stymied the Soviet AI on Normal settings.

I will give you a fight PBEM.

Let me know if you want to play.

Randy

Sure, not played pbem before - been learning the ropes against the AI but should be able to retreat all the way to the Elbe in style!-)
Drop me a note and suggest settings and potential house rules.

Been reading Tissiers book "With our back to Berlin".
It's perfect to combine with a run through of scenarios like this!

John,

I was the guy who made the changes to Vistula to Berlin with Trey's and Dominik's approval. There were some items on the Soviet side that I missed as I was focused more on the German side. In any event, I have made some changes to my Scenario file that comes with 1.08.01beta.

They are below and the rationale for them is noted. If you agree I will send you my Scenario file and we can get under way. If you don't agree I change them back so we can get started.

I reduced the number of Yak-9D air units from 35 to 9. (A drop of 26 air units) This aircraft became available in March 43 and is produced until September 45 @ 20 a week.
I increased the number of Yak-9DD air units from 0 to 1. This aircraft is first produced in May 44 and is produced until August 45 @ 6 per week.
I increased the number of Yak-9U from 0 to 25. This aircraft first became available in April 44 and is produced until July 45 @ 57 a week
The number of Yak-9 air units remained the same only the type changed to reflect the much higher production of the Yak-9U.
The Yak-9U is a better plane than the Yak-9D, but I made the changes to be more historically accurate.

I reduced the number of Yak-7B air units from 6 to 0. The Yak-7B went out of production in April 44. These 6 air units went to the upgrade Yak-9M.
I increased the number of Yak-9M units from 10 to 16 (explained above)

I reduced the number of IS2 M1943 tank units from 29 to 22. This vehicle went out of production in June 44.
I increased the number of IS2 M1944 tank units from 0 to 7. This vehicle became available in July 44 @ 54 a week.

I reduced the number of SU-85 units from 17 to 6. The SU-85 went out of production in June 44.
I increased the number of SU-85M units from 0 to 11. The SU-85M was produced from July to November 44.

That is all of the additional changes I made to 1.08.01beta.

If you are good with that then we can begin.

I have just completed my Soviet Turn 1 against the AI so I sort of know what is coming your way.

I am not a "gamey player", and will not surround any of your panzer divisions on Turn 1, but I will try to reduce them to kampfgruppen! Some of your infantry divisions will be surrounded and isolated on Turn 1, XXXXII Korps/4th Panzer Army for example. Those divisions historically were smashed and surrendered so that again is historical. In my game against the AI I made progress in Courland, but I will not advance of Turn 1 in Courland, but I will try and destroy your fortified line. You should not be in that bad of shape at the end of my Turn 1, but I will be poised to wreck havoc on my Turn 2.

Please e-mail me at home and I will send you my scenario file. Remember, this is 1.08.01beta.

Thanks,

Randy

Hi Randy,

You can always send your updated file for inclusion in 1.08.02. But you don't have to hurry, the work on it has just started.

Dominik,

I am still researching whether Soviet Cavalry Corps had the M4A2 Sherman 75mm instead of the T34M1942. I know some of the Cavalry Corps had them, and it would be cooler to get some Sherman 75's in the scenario.

Randy

Thx Randy,

Sounds like you're the man to discuss the Vistula operation with! [;)]
Should be able to do 1 turn a day - but first turn tomorrow evening, Xmas shopping and kids stole my day today.

I'm from Norway, so we got an 8 hour time difference.
Looking forward to the game and my defense of Berlin [:D]

I only know that some Mechanized Corps used those tanks.

John,

Give me your e-mail and I will send you the Scenario File.

Set up Human v Human, PBEB Box Checked.

You choose an Axis Password.

Start Game. Save and send me the file as I have the 1st Turn.

Pretty sure that how it works.

Lock HQ Support.

FOG of War your call.

Randy

Done,

Will be interesting to see if Courland Pocket can be held and if hanging around in Memel for the VP is a pure waste of good troops.
I'm curious whether an all out evacuation is a must or if its possible to try a defense.
- I also like playing historical whenever possible instead of being "gamey".
