Baelfiin -> Opening Movie for WitW (12/19/2014 11:41:38 AM)

Simply the best I have ever seen. Hats off to the folks who put it together.

KenchiSulla -> RE: Opening Movie for WitW (12/19/2014 12:33:01 PM)

I only just now (after your post) took the time to watch it.. You are right, it is very nicely done.

VilleYrjola -> RE: Opening Movie for WitW (12/19/2014 1:13:53 PM)

Any chance to make it run again after the first time I start the game? I pressed esc during the cutscenes in order to set full screen on.

Helpless -> RE: Opening Movie for WitW (12/19/2014 1:16:41 PM)

You need to switch back to window mode or open it manually from the \dat\video folder.

Erik Rutins -> RE: Opening Movie for WitW (12/19/2014 1:27:04 PM)

In the default windowed mode it will play every time you launch the game, just hit Escape if you want to skip it.

I'm glad you all like it. Barry Munden and I worked on that and it took quite a few iterations between the choice of music (which we were also working with Marco on for the game) and the edits/composition of the video until we felt we had it just right. I hope it provides the proper inspiration for your games. [8D]

Regards,

- Erik

Gilmer -> RE: Opening Movie for WitW (12/20/2014 1:04:49 AM)

The music and video are very good. I liked it immediately.

DuskoPopov -> RE: Opening Movie for WitW (12/20/2014 1:41:18 AM)

Honestly it's nothing special IMO. Just a bunch o generic images and I haven't spotted a single one featuring the Axis side. Great game though.

I totally agree - provided that you think that the war in the west was a 97.35% US effort.
Cynical - moi?

Erik Rutins -> RE: Opening Movie for WitW (12/20/2014 5:15:44 PM)

We actually had trouble in terms of finding enough historical footage at a high enough resolution to showcase more of the Allies. If you watch, you will see it's not just US forces, but the video is roughly 80% US because the high quality footage available to us was mostly US footage. We put a few more pieces of Allied footage in the victory video.

DuskoPopov, we did want the intro video to focus on the "War of Liberation" theme. You can see more of an Axis focus in the Axis victory video.

Regards,

- Erik

No, it was actually for a large part Soviet. Red Banner anyone?

War In The West was for a large part Soviet?

KenchiSulla -> RE: Opening Movie for WitW (12/20/2014 5:50:31 PM)

Enabled by the Soviets. No War in the West without a War in the East. Or do you think that the western allies would have had a lot of success against 3 million German defenders?

Meteor2 -> RE: Opening Movie for WitW (12/20/2014 5:56:41 PM)

I was a little bit disappointed, that only pictures and films of the allies were to be seen.
That is far better in WitE.

Of course the brunt of the land war was fought between the Germans and Soviets - everyone who knows anything about WWII knows that.

But the game is called War In The West - the Eastern Front is abstract using a box. On that basis why would you need to show any Soviets at all?

Oh....

KenchiSulla -> RE: Opening Movie for WitW (12/20/2014 6:48:39 PM)

You didn't get it...

warspite1 -> RE: Opening Movie for WitW (12/20/2014 7:00:06 PM)

Evidently not........

KenchiSulla -> RE: Opening Movie for WitW (12/20/2014 7:05:30 PM)

Or are you angry about the lack of enough English soldiers displayed in the intro? Or the fact that Warspite is not in it...

warspite1 -> RE: Opening Movie for WitW (12/20/2014 7:42:08 PM)

Angry? No of course not. English? No this isn't the 1500's [;)]

Personally I think it would have been nice to have more of the Commonwealth/Free French and Polish forces represented in the titles (we do seem to be something of an afterthought) although it is only right that the US should have the lion's share of the credits.

As for the missing Warspite, yes I am absolutely livid about that - there is no excuse for missing off the ship that won World War II [;)]

I'm not sure if the strategic bombers fits the "liberation theme" then... I don't intend to be mean, but in my opinion the video is dull. I realize that it is supposed to be mainly an Allied show, but having few images featuring Axis troops would make it much more dynamic. You could for example show the flak crews in action after showing the Allied bombers. I can think of fallschirmjäger in defensive fighting in Italy, German tanks crews scanning anxiously the skies during the Normandy campaign, something from the Ardennes offensive and lastly the German POWs. Just few iconic and easy to associate images would make the video much more interesting.

LiquidSky -> RE: Opening Movie for WitW (12/21/2014 6:51:05 AM)

So much fuss over something 99% skip over by hitting the spacebar.

The other 1% renamed the video folder to avoid the spacebar....

warspite1

Not really a lot of fuss - just an exchange of views on a subject some people feel that is worthy of discussion and debate.

RayWolfe -> RE: Opening Movie for WitW (12/21/2014 8:35:50 AM)

Wow!
Sorry I spoke.
There will obviously be some bias from a US company and my comment was meant to be tongue in cheek.
There are similar examples on UK television all the time - got some footage of WWII? - then we'll use it regardless of the suitability. You know the sort of thing - a British D-Day veteran dies - we'll show some footage of Omaha beach. An American tank ace tells his story and it's backed by pictures of a mark VI Crusader in the desert. I'm afraid that young TV researchers have very little clue - and why should they? It's just me getting old and crotchety.
