Davekhps -> Airbases not expanding (12/23/2014 4:14:57 PM)

I mentioned this a couple days ago in the main thread-- Battleground Italy 43-45, despite being in supply, depots nearby or in the same hex, construction units available, none of my airbases expand, they all sit at 1%. Has happened in each game I've played, each version.

What am I missing here?

(BTW, some of the airbases I set to expand that never do-- Palermo, Montecorvino, Porto Vecchio, Cappacio, etc.)

This is a big guess, so don't take it as anything else because I don't know if it even matters... but in your post the airbases are in supply, near or on depots.... but you don't mention the supply priority for the airbase itself. In supply but priority of 0 still means no supplies.

I have no idea if this affects airbase building.

RedLancer -> RE: Airbases not expanding (12/23/2014 4:51:05 PM)

OK - I can get Capua to expand so no bug I believe.

I think that you need to remember three things - damaged airbases have to repair first, Construction Units will only be sent to an airbase within the Comd Range of their HQ and make sure you have supply priority high as supplies are needed to expand airbase.

Davekhps -> RE: Airbases not expanding (12/23/2014 9:55:25 PM)

It was the Command Range that stumped me-- it works!

That said, construction units don't seem to flow down very well from Army Group HQ, even in range-- the only way I can force the issue is by assigning them to Army HQ, or even ideally Corps HQ. They flow down from Army Group just fine to fix rail, but never seem to get around to airbases unless, again, I manually assign them to lower-level HQs.

Davekhps -> RE: Airbases not expanding (12/24/2014 7:19:23 PM)

Okay, still not right. I was able to get this working for a while, no problems, by pushing down my construction units to lower HQs. All's well and good.

But as the game went along, the units deployed less and less frequently. Now, they don't deploy at all, no matter which HQ I assign them to. Supply situations again look good, no damage to repair... *now* what am I doing wrong?

dereck -> RE: Airbases not expanding (12/27/2014 8:27:38 PM)

Okay I just noticed my air bases in England aren't expanding.

One example is Thruxton BR Air Base. It has 171% of supplies needed, 2 hexes from a supply depot but won't expand.
It's supply is also set to 4.

Do the airbases expand without engineers or do I need to have engineer units assigned to the air HQs to make them expand?

Thanks.

How does one assign Construction Units to an Air HQ so they will go expand an airbase? [&:]

(I ask because when I try to assign support units from any Air HQ I don't get any possible units for them.

Davekhps -> RE: Airbases not expanding (12/28/2014 1:36:11 AM)

You don't assign the construction units to air HQs, you assign them to ground HQs near the airbase.

Thing is, CUs *should* flow down through the command chain (I think), so if they're at, say, Army Group level but you need an airbase expanded near a Division HQ, the CU should flow down and show up at the airbase. CUs do this when fixing rail all the time, but I find airbase expansion to be very, very stubborn-- the best kluge I can offer is to assign the CUs to as low an HQ as possible and park the HQ near the expanding airbase (allowing room on the hex for the CU to show up the next turn, i.e. only park two units max on the airbase, not three).

Still, like I wrote above-- this only seems to work sporadically, and eventually I ended up not being able to expand any bases at all, the CUs just would not deploy (yet they still deployed just fine for rail repair, but ignoring the airbase... grrr).

Belphegor -> RE: Airbases not expanding (12/28/2014 2:23:13 AM)

Dave, you've turned off all your supply. As soon as I turned it back on my pet airbase started building and made it 43% in one turn.

edit: I'll add more detail. Just getting a new copy of your file to give you a step-by-step

Belphegor -> RE: Airbases not expanding (12/28/2014 2:44:45 AM)

Step 1. Turn your national supply back on. All of the ports in africa that have stars can be at 4. Don't know if this matters. But when they're at 0 they don't ship anything of note... or perhaps it's because of step 2....

Step 2. Create a depot at every port in Italy. Turn them all to 4. You have a great rail network, but not enough supplies are moving on it.

Watch your shipped out supplies. The file you sent has 47k tonnes going to Italy. When I make these changes I ship 315k tonnes.

essentially you weren't shipping enough supplies to Italy proper. You weren't suffering, but you weren't prospering.

Note the image with the repair unit from the AG, and the airbase at 40% (this time)
This is one turn after the turn you submitted above.

A comparison of the supply details between your settings and my changes. Obviously I bumped up the supply priority to ensure I could cause a reaction. I was looking for the reason you couldn't build airbases; not be elegant with supplies. But you can see the difference in levels immediately. Have a look at how much freight came in turn 83, vs 84 (middle portion of screens).

I sent Gary the save and he did find something that he said was probably causing the problem with the engineers not going out to build the airbases. He couldn't say how often the issue would come up, but he saw an old piece of code that was checking an off rail value of some kind that shouldn't have been checked anymore. He fixed it and tested the save and units were sent out to expand the airbases. This fix will be in the next update. Thanks for sending the saves.

Belphegor, thank you so for much for your help, you're the best.

And Joel, pass thanks to you and Gary for taking a deeper look... looking forward to the patch!
