Banquet -> Army Group Structure question (12/27/2014 11:37:20 AM)

My latest game is extremely enjoyable. Helped by the fact that I now actually have some time over Christmas to play and extend my rather basic understanding of the game.

So far I'm advancing up the boot and have 2 further amphib attacks planned. I am doing my best to keep the army/corps together and notice that 8th Army HQ has about 4-5 divisions attached directly to it. This may be because I have used the 'auto assign units to nearest applicable HQ' button a few times.

Is it appropriate to have numerous divisions attached directly to an army group HQ or would I be better distributing those divisions back to the corp HQ?

Without getting into details, one of the benefits of having units in a chain of command (corps, army, army group for example) is that it adds (granted, it depends on quality of leadership) chances to pass checks (admin, initiative etc.).

I do notice that when you auto-assign to the nearest HQ, it skips any HQ's that are already full up on command point upkeep. That's probably why they got attached to the army directly. As for whether it's better to assign to Corps HQ's or not, I assume there is a benefit there somewhere or why else have Corps HQ's in the first place? I tried looking through the manual, but it doesn't clearly say what the difference is.

If it follows the WitE pattern, there are only so many Op points a HQ has. So having a corp's structure allows the higher level HQs to not be 'overwhelmed' with requests for support. Which is which is why it is a good practice to assign TDs, ENG, etc to Corps HQ and the heavier ART to higher levels. Since to get additional combat support will only require one leader check at the Corp level versus two, one for the Corp to pass (sending the request higher up) and then the higher level HQ check.

So if the AI determines your attack should have an ENG attached to the attack, would you want one or two checks to be made before the assignment [:)] Or would you want to not have any assigned at all, because your higher level HQ was too 'busy' with other checks and could not assign anything.

This brings up another important concept in that your major attacks should be done first before any minor ones. As this allows the most assets to be available for those attacks. Planes, support, etc. Otherwise you could have assets 'used up' on more minor attacks and not have the 'umph' needed for the big show attacks by the time you got to them. [:(]

Is there any way to tell what the command capacity is? I can't see that anywhere when I look at HQ's?

edit, just seen how to find out from the CR but not sure it's shown on the counter info anywhere?

For some reason, I thought that only SUs attached to corps HQs in WITE would be committed to oombat? Do SUs at army and army group level participate?

They can, but it would be rare since they'd have to be in range first, and then all the checks you have to pass. SU's are best served at the corps/division level.

Army/Army Group SU will fight in ground battle? Even if there is a corp hq controlling the battle?

Yes, if they are in range. If I have a crap ton of arty in a hq (and I've distributed it to the corps already), I will move it to within one hex from an area I want to try and support for an assault. Sometimes you get it, sometimes it fails too many checks, but it can't hurt to try. Armies are where I store replacements and support units that my corps can't handle due to command pts. You can also use them as mobile flak units as you can with your Air HQ's also. Putting the support units directly into a division and a corps works well for me. With every step, you can fail a check, so the lower down the chain you have it, the less checks for support.
