fearlessdylan -> Air Combat Abort Issue (12/31/2014 9:31:51 PM)

This is a general, multi-part, problem with air to air combat, but especially with naval air combat.

Using version 1.2.3.2 (previous beta release).

1- Rule implementation issue. When air to air combats have no more bombers left for either side the application allows us to continue fighting (with options to abort for each side after a full round, as per usual). My understanding of the rules (unless they've changed) is that once no more bombers are left for either side the air to air combat is over and all remaining fighters go home.

2- Air to Air combat abort issue. I've found that often, not always, if the first side in the round decides to abort then an application exception is thrown and displayed as an error. Choosing to continue allows the program to continue however there is no button left on the air to air combat form to do anything, so the program is effectively frozen. In these cases, if the second side chooses to abort instead then the game proceeds normally, everything working fine.

3- Air to Air combat at sea: The same problem as above (2) except that it occurs if either side aborts, rendering it impossible to complete an air to air combat at sea unless both sides stick around until one side has no planes left (fighters or bombers).

I am not attaching a save game for these problems, since i found them repeatable in all instances so figure it must be a general problem, though it seems strange i haven't seen any mention of it on this forum so maybe it's just me. If a save is needed to demonstrate the issues then i could generate and provide one upon request.

Thanks and happy new year to everyone,

Dylan

On point number 1: here is RAW:

14.3.2 Combat
You fight each air-to-air combat in a series of rounds. This series
continues until every aircraft on one side is either destroyed, aborted
or cleared through.

So it is OK to have fighters continuing an air-to-air combat if there are no more bombers present on both sides.

On 2 and 3: What sometimes happens is that when Carrier Planes abort, the land carrier form is behind the combat form (which is annoying, but you should be able to shift it to a position where you can land carrier planes). More often a form isn't shown during air-to-air combat. Pressing F10 and closing that form again forces the missing form to come on top of the air-to-air combat form, so you can continue your game.

Can you check if this is enough information to proceed? If not, than we would like a saved game with instruction on how to recreate the problem. You stated it yourself, there hasn't been any mention of it, so this comes as a surprise...

Thanks Centuur,

On point one, without checking the rules, when did that change ? been playing the board game since early nineties and always remember the rule to be that when no bombers are left the air to air is over, i guess that's just wrong or changed at some point.

for the larger issue (2 and 3) i've been playing without carrier planes (as they are broken in 1.2.3.2) so a "land carrier form" doesn't or shouldn't apply. based on other forum posts i've tried pressing F10 in this and other situations where it seems that a there might be a background form problem, but in all cases it only brings up the u.s entry options form, so no go.

I'll gather a save game with instructions and post that up as soon as i have the time, thanks again,
Dylan

For a fact that has been the rule since at least 2003. I can't recall it being any other way. However, if it's not naval air, then one or the other side almost always aborts since they have nothing to gain in terms of preventing the bombers from attacking and are at a disadvantage in the combat. In naval air, if you abort, then your carrier planes will be on the CVs for when any enemy cleared through bombers attack, so those are often fought to the bitter end.

I would appreciate that.

It is difficult to reproduce many problems without a saved game and instructions. Otherwise I (and the beta testers) spend time trying to reproduce reported bugs but then everything works correctly - which is very frustrating and doesn't solve anything.
