NCommander -> Global War/3-5 Player/Team Viewer (1/2/2015 11:24:23 AM)

So, based on other discussions going around, I'd be interested in getting a large MWiF match going. I'm going to throw my copy up on EC2, and then install TeamViewer. I think this will be one of the first more than 2P MWiF games so I'd also like if all (or most) players would contribute an AAR about it.

Players:
NCommander (CW)
fearlessdylan (USA/Nationalist China)
Tjalfe (Germany)
paulderynck (Japan)
-empty- (It)
-empty- (France/USSR/Comm China)

Rule Set:

Open to discussion, but I'm OK with the stock advanced rules, with the possible exception of variable reorg costs (this hurts Germany a lot I find)

House Rules:

Open to discussion; we'll manually have to enforce these. One thing is to figure out a set of "standing orders" for handling stuff like intercepts and such so we can play asynchronously as much as possible.

Chinese Surrender:
If China can surrender, both Chinese players must agree to it before it can be taken

Time:
Tuesday/Thursdays are difficult for me. The game will be running 24/7 on EC2 so players can make their moves then continue but it would be good to have a period of a few hours with everyone online. My schedule is flexible at the moment, but come the 20th, I've got classes in the evening.

fearlessdylan -> RE: Global War/3-5 Player/Team Viewer (1/2/2015 11:45:56 AM)

I'd like to join. My preference is set blocks of time where at least those involved could be present simultaneously to avoid standing orders (plus it's just more fun), however willing to at least try the async thing if that's all that can be reasonably managed.

good to play any country, first choice would be u.s.a.

Dylan

NCommander -> RE: Global War/3-5 Player/Team Viewer (1/2/2015 12:57:48 PM)

Added. Once we have a list of players, we can try and work out common times. I actually was interested in the US myself, but I think I'll take the CW & France. I', not hugely picky though.

Tjalfe -> RE: Global War/3-5 Player/Team Viewer (1/2/2015 1:33:15 PM)

I am up for a game as well. I would prefer to play Italy or Germany. If necessary I can handle Russia or Japan.

I am located in Europe with flexible hours for playing. I am fond of using many options but there are no dealbreakers for me.

Michael

NCommander -> RE: Global War/3-5 Player/Team Viewer (1/2/2015 1:48:02 PM)

Added. I'll leave this up for another day or two to see if we get any more players, and if not, get EC2 setup and send information on how to connect and such :-).

paulderynck -> RE: Global War/3-5 Player/Team Viewer (1/2/2015 8:55:03 PM)

I would like to participate. I'll play Japan or Russia.

warspite1 -> RE: Global War/3-5 Player/Team Viewer (1/2/2015 9:01:14 PM)

Gents

Is there any possibility of an AAR for this - that would be (apologies for sounding like a teenager) awesome!

paulderynck -> RE: Global War/3-5 Player/Team Viewer (1/2/2015 9:08:10 PM)

The initiator has requested all participants to do one.

That's the plan. If you and Orm want to hop in as Japan and Italy, we can get this ball rolling ;-).

I gave you the USSR/Communist China, though you can switch to Japan if you want.

I also added a house rule that for China to surrender, both sides must agree (RAC allows the nationalist player to surrender alone). I've currently got EC2 setting up the game right now.

---

I have the files uploading to EC2 now (this is going to take awhile), and it looks like we might use VNC vs. TeamViewer (the client is built into all versions of windows out of the box, no software to install \o/)

paulderynck -> RE: Global War/3-5 Player/Team Viewer (1/2/2015 10:42:28 PM)

Tough call given what's left but Japan would be my first choice.

NCommander -> RE: Global War/3-5 Player/Team Viewer (1/2/2015 10:55:51 PM)

I changed you country allocation to Japan. If you want to fight for one of the other ones, you could make a bid for it (per the bidding rules in RAW). WIF is now installing, and I'm going to play a turn or two solo of global war just to make sure there aren't any unexpected hiccups with this setup (if anyone wants to help me trial run this, PM me, or add me on Skype: fossfirefighter).

fearlessdylan -> RE: Global War/3-5 Player/Team Viewer (1/2/2015 11:44:57 PM)

who's playing germany and who's playing russia ? i mentioned my first choice is usa, but could play any of those if needed as well, your call.

Thanks for the offer, although sadly work commitments preclude me from saying yes this time.

I shall watch this with interest however.

Tjalfe is playing Germany, there is currently no player for USSR or Italy, if by time I'm done testing the setup, I'll assign Italy to Tjalfe. I looked at the scenario booklet, and it actually recommends that France should be controlled by the USSR player, so I'll give whoever wants Russia the option to take France as well. If anyone is around who wants to help test this setup (I'm going to play two turns of global war to make sure everything works well like this), post here or drop a line.

After I'm convinced this will work, we'll get the games started :-). I think we should probably house rule though adding/removing players since real life tends to crop up. Maybe something like this

Player Replacement
At any point, players may be added or removed from the game. In case of player removal, the major power(s) they control shall be reassigned to another play on the same side (i.e., the Russian player resigns. the USSR shall be played the USA). Players may be added if someone is interested, and there is a vacant major power, assuming a majority of the group agrees.

Tjalfe -> RE: Global War/3-5 Player/Team Viewer (1/3/2015 7:15:41 AM)

I have downloaded TeamViewer and I have a little time to test if I can access the game. Please PM me with info.

Regarding player replacement I will leave it to your discretion to figure out when someone is AWOL and you decide if someone is to be replaced.

Michael

NCommander -> RE: Global War/3-5 Player/Team Viewer (1/3/2015 7:27:14 AM)

PM sent, I got it working in team viewer; its a BIT clunky due to low resolution but it is playable.

Centuur -> RE: Global War/3-5 Player/Team Viewer (1/3/2015 11:28:36 AM)

What are the timezones everyone is in for this game? That seems to be pretty important to know, since there has to be time for everyone to be online to discuss necessary strategy and tactics...

If I would join and someone from Australia is in it too, that's sure to be a problem, isn't it?

NCommander -> RE: Global War/3-5 Player/Team Viewer (1/3/2015 11:40:04 AM)

I'm EST, but I have a sleep disorder, so my hours tend to move around a lot, so I just force myself to be awake when need be. Paul is in Canada, so he could be PST-AST or NFST. I'm not really such where the other two players are. Oz is roughly 16(?) hours ahead of me, but it creates some timezone overlap. Honestly, I'm mostly expecting a lot of play to "log in when you can, do your moves, follow standing orders, etc", then write it up, off to the next player, which most of the discussion being via PM, or email.

I'm expecting this game to take a few months at best; perhaps less if we can streamline the process a bit.

EDIT: I was going to setup a small private forum with SMF or PHPBB on the server so the Axis and Allied sides can discuss in private relatively easy.

EDIT 2: So I've mostly finished the global war setup via TeamViewer. Its playable though the resolution is a tad wonky. Also, its semi-sensitive to latency, I'm not 100% how well it will work from Oz.

fearlessdylan -> RE: Global War/3-5 Player/Team Viewer (1/3/2015 3:21:53 PM)

I'm in the U.S. Eastern time zone, usually online and typically can play in spurts throughout the day if that's how things turn out.
if we don't have a Russian player i'd be fine to play any allied power that's missing at a given time.
when do we start ?

paulderynck -> RE: Global War/3-5 Player/Team Viewer (1/3/2015 3:56:16 PM)

I'm MST but availability is much like fearlessdylan. I'm interested in trying this out mainly because of the (expected) ability to examine the board and move without everyone else needing to "be there" all at once. Of course PMs or emails or IMs saying I need to do something would be honored asap.

We are reaching the point where perhaps we should move this offline to answer any questions about access control and intercommunication.

NCommander -> RE: Global War/3-5 Player/Team Viewer (1/3/2015 4:36:28 PM)

I've got SMF setup, and will send PMs to all confirmed players right now. Still hoping we'll get one or two more, but if not, we can start with 4. Probably by EOD today we'll get things rolling.

gw15 -> RE: Global War/3-5 Player/Team Viewer (1/5/2015 6:55:06 PM)

Put me on the list. I'll play any country.

Gerry

Pax25 -> RE: Global War/3-5 Player/Team Viewer (1/6/2015 2:04:34 AM)

I can try taking Italy. Just let me know what I need to do in order to get the game going.

NCommander -> RE: Global War/3-5 Player/Team Viewer (1/6/2015 2:28:11 PM)

PMs sent, welcome to the game :-)

superval -> RE: Global War/3-5 Player/Team Viewer (1/8/2015 2:23:34 AM)

Hi NCommander
Im very interested in how you set this up on EC2 and what is required to get this going. I assume you need an EC2 instance with Windows running? Also, by setting up this way, does it allow for simultaneous user interaction or do you still need team viewer?

Any guidance you can provide would be gratefully received!

Cheers

Create a EC2 micro instance (free tier if you're new account) with Windows Server 2012. Get the password for the machine and connect via Remote Desktop Connection. Install TeamViewer in unattended mode (which allows for simulatious user interaction, you can't do it with RDP at with with the out of the box setup. It might be possible with terminal services but I haven't tried).

Upload the MWIF 1.0.0 installer from the DVD or download addition, then install the 1.3.1 beta on it, install the hotfix to 1.3.1.5. Its worked beautifully thus far, aside from some minor resolution hiccups.

superval -> RE: Global War/3-5 Player/Team Viewer (1/8/2015 3:24:37 AM)

Thanks NCommander, much appreciated.

Zorachus99 -> RE: Global War/3-5 Player/Team Viewer (1/8/2015 1:17:30 PM)

Interesting thread

"AWS Free Tier includes 750 hours of Linux and Windows t2.micro instances each month for one year. To stay within the Free Tier, use only EC2 Micro instances."

That would bug me long term.

BTW, I did some testing with XP mode with a Windows 7 VM, and then converted it to VMWare and tried VMWare free player. VMware with the free player works much faster.

I'm currently running my own Teamspeak server and the Windows 7 VMware Player on my PC for multi-player sessions for free. This is a pretty good price. The other nice thing, is I can browse the web while those Brits are doing their tedious naval moves. VMware runs at a much lower resolution than my native 2560x1440 so that I have compatible screen dimensions for everyone. Teamspeak is much easier to connect to, and deal with than with Skype IMO.

Not everyone has a 100Mb connection at home though. I'm shocked I pay less than $70 a month for it.

bigred -> RE: Global War/3-5 Player/Team Viewer (1/30/2015 3:00:31 AM)

Just looked into Wif forum. Dont have the comp version. Interesting, and may buy the game.

Enforcer -> RE: Global War/3-5 Player/Team Viewer (5/25/2015 12:36:29 AM)

How did this game go? was it successful up on ec2 with teamviewer?
