It looks like the Realtek HD audio driver may be the underlying cause of the high memory consumption. With that driver installed the working set footprint is +200-250kb which puts command.exe up near 850kb with "nothing happening."
I am still getting some crashes; however, they are unlike anything i've posted before. So for now, every thread/crash report opened by me, put as "not reproduced in 1.06" and close them down.
As I get some more details (i'm working with some different driver versions now) i'll post specifics about the R/T driver, and once I can recreate (if I can) any crashes on multiple machines i'll post as new threads for 1.06.
