BigBog -> Creating a Small tactical engagement -map q (1/9/2015 9:43:47 PM)

Is there a way to easily take a large map (one provided by the game for example) and restrict the battle engagement area to a small subset piece of that map? Like maybe "blacking out hexes" in the editor somehow or chopping the map down?

I am enjoying FCRS immensely and want to create a couple of very small tactical engagements for fun and for trying different tactics.

Thanks for any help here--

There is currently now way to sub-divide a map. What we do in-house to test small situation is pick a map with terrain we want to use and just setup small forces with a VP point or two and test. We have a lot of these test scenarios and they work fine.

You should be able to cut a map down if you wanted to create actual smaller maps.

Good Hunting.

True, you can take the art file and cut it down, but then you would need to go into the map editor and hand add all of the map values. I think he was looking for a way to parse out a map area and we don't have that at the moment, nor do we have an exclusion "marker" to make hexes off limits. Both nice things for 2.1x stuff.

Capn, Mad Russian,
Thanks for the responses. I did try the approach of limiting the area by use of localized VP points, seems to work Ok. I did notice that the AI is rather adventuresome on the map I chose and sent one group on a long route to the objective! Was not a route that I had defended against, so it was surprise when they showed up on my far left flank (poor recon)! Really pleased with the AI.

I haven't tried cutting down the art file approach yet, maybe this weekend, although I read much of the steps needed to do so in the tutorials you guys have provided. Great support and thanks!

I am hopeful of seeing this platform extended with modules of the current/modern era-- an excellent system! Kudos!

There is a way of creating a submap from a bigg map

Stap 1:
Cut a png from a bigger one with ImageMagick
Example: convert "NL xxx 1985.png" -crop 2568x1952+2885+2177 +repage "NL Rotterdam 1985.png"

Stap 2: (only ones)
Create a new .fp9 with the MapValue editor.

Stap 3:
Import the correct map value from the original .fp9 with this OtsFp9Tools
otsfp9tools /filename="NL Rotterdam 1985.png" /import="NL xxx 1985.png" /offsetcol=53 /offsetcol=46

Put this within a script and you can maintain the bigger map and update the smaller map.

Thanks Harry--will try that today!

...or you can use Harry's tool! Sorry Harry been a long week on many fronts and I forgot about that. [8|]
