If Noumea is only showing 1000 enemy troops, why are you bothering with the Isle of Pines? A good bombardment and landing he 4th Marines and Noumea is yours.

Well, I should point out the map above has an error. The 1st marine Raiders landed at Tanna. There was resistance as well. They still
got ashore in good order. PHEW!

Why Isle of Pines:
1.) I play a bit on the "romantic" side. The boys (10av) have been stranded there since the debacle last fall. I wanted
to free them.
2.) The MO for Lars is give it up and take it back. I want air up as soon as possible with the least amount of naval air
support as possible. Kido Butai is intact. He may have wanted to preserve his ground forces, but I know he would
like a naval engagement sooner rather than later. I think he may be presuming I am two carriers less than fact.
3.) I want as many possible bases around any objective I take to give me some cover during the heavy reinforcement
to follow.

Makes me wonder whether one unit is getting the + for Leadership and the other is getting the + for Inspiration or Land skill.
Besides, Thomas Edison may have been a brilliant inventor but I don't think he was necessarily a great leader. Now "Red Mike" Edson on the other hand ...

More difficult to close two air bases than one...


Have to agree. WE tend to look at the main bases and build them only. I think this is a carry over from the no stacking limits days.
Stacking limits alone has caused me to look at building up many supporting bases in a sector, not just the main ones.
Noumea has a pretty low stacking limit and in my last game I was not able to use it as the only hub for stockpiling my Solomons invasion forces.

Thank you sir. As for the expansion thing, YES! I said as much I NyGiants AAR some time back. Players stretching
the extreme limits of Japan. Learning from other ARRs, and expounding on them. It most definitely has made the
Allied challenge much harder IMHO when facing an experienced and aggressive IJ player. I just hope they don't run
out of ideas.

I would agree ... and the penality for overexpansion is the hokkaido hurricane or some form of it ..

Radier's game vs GreyJoy was the first that I recall where the IJ take over the world and then bam -- the Allies are on the gates ..
PZB's game shows there is a cost to overexpansion .. the supplies it takes to take PH and the world spend the 401K investment in supplies that need to be banked .. and the IJ ran out ..

I beleive the conclusion in the end will be aligned with NJP72's comment in a thread that the IJ need to find a perimeter and build up a defense rather than expand until a sudden collapse ...

Finding that perimeter and building fallback lines from there was exactly what Greyjoy did on his first outing as the Emperor and Grand Pooh-bah of Japan. He also kept KB nearly intact but raided often when it was safe enough.

When the allies began breaking his interlocking bases (after months of pounding) he masterfully pulled back most troops to his next line, already mostly built to high level forts and airfields.

I think that one got hung up on the bug in the Air Combat model that borked CAP, so we didn't get to see the Allies struggle into 1946.

How is your sub war going?? You are almost to the final reduction in dud rate. [sm=00000436.gif] I use the Gato and Balboa Class to start my blockade of Japan and the others in areas like the Solomons to hunt for KB and other ships. Right now, I would have about a dozen around Truk. Most to the west to get at any Tks coming in with fuel.

Static defence will not save Japan.  An active defence with appropriate counterattacks is vital to maintain or at least contest the initiative.

Agreed. The idea of a series of defensive locations in a limited perimeter is to prevent dilution of Japanese strength and provide hard points that will tie the Allies down for a while. During this grind-down period, the Japanese can look for opportunities to make forays where the benefits outweigh the costs. That is what Greyjoy did with his KB raids when the Allies concentrated too much in one area.

On land, once the Japanese tanks are outclassed by the Allied ones, the only place they have superior mobility is China and maybe Burma until the Allied tanks can get there.

In the air, it seems that Japan needs to move its bombers around frequently to pull off surprise raids and dodge strikes on their airfields.

You gotta post game dates more often - I had to go back 20 posts to find out you were in August 1943 at that time. When you mentioned about ineffective subs I was thinking early 1943 when the US fleet subs had just got some semi-working torps. That score is pretty dismal for August 1943 or whatever your game date is.

I think before the first torp upgrade the probability is P(.20) per torp .. so to know if you got borked you would need to know how many torps fired at how many targets. If 20% on average made their mark then the game is working as designed .. I have had more sunk ships from US subs but I also had a whole bunch of encouters .. and lots of duds that on occasion a torp made a hit .. The other hope is the law of regression toward the mean and that in 1944 you are going to get your just due .. [8D]

Truly abysmal results from the sub service. There have been several chances at Yamato and some of the fleet
carriers, nothing. About half the sub fleet is in port waiting to redeploy. It maybe time to try hunting deeper in
Indian country.

Luganville falls without a reaction, yet. There is a large concentration of Japanese in the southern Solomons.

Subs and leaders - time to sortie these guys and double check leaders before doing so. I go with very aggressive leaders. You should have plenty of them by now and the PP cost for them is relatively cheap.
