I am on turn 8...Ugh.. taking my time, but I still have some damaged ships trying to get to port heading South of Singapore. There are few shipyards in this area. If I expand the a port, where there is a shipyard, will this add more tonnage of ships I can bring in for repair?

Assuming you are playing the Allies, the answer is no. There is no mechanism for the Allies to make shipyards any larger than they are at the start of the game. I think the Japanese side can expand some, but I don't know to what extent, or if it applies to specific yards.

Your shipyards in the area are basically Manila, Singapore, and Soerabaja. You will likely lose all three of them before long. If you have serious repairs to make to your capital ships, its off to Cape Town or Columbo.

Early war (6 months or so) Colombo is unsafe as the allies simply lack enough air power on map to protect it from KB raids, so Cape Town should be your port of choice. Once you’ve got enough fighter cover to keep KB at bay or at a minimum make a raid very costly in lost pilots if KB does come calling then go ahead and use Colombo.

In the first 6 months KB can sail up and park a few hexes away and hammer anything in the yards until it’s all sunk. The AI won’t do something like that but a human will for sure if he sees large ships in port there. Always play in a way that develops skills you’d want to use vs. a human. Doing something because you can get away with it vs. the AI is developing bad habits that will come back and bite you when you dive in to PBEM play.

The key issue here is whether you are playing against the AI or a human. Columbo is usually fairly safe against the AI. A human is another issue.
